I've noticed this phenomenon too and I'm not sure why it does that sometimes... Maybe has something to do with how far up a bolt originates, or possibly other activity in the clouds that takes a longer to get to you. The sound at the ground you hear first, and then the rumbles from higher up in the bolt's path reach you gradually afterward. Maybe the bolt was going sideways and the top is even farther away. Who knows...

Not sure if it has to do with some kind of terrain echo. I heard one continuous thunder from a lightning strike last night and the rumble seemed to start on one side of the house, and over 10 seconds move slowly around to the other side, and then behind me.
