I'm gonna relay one from the wife.Her office just installed a bunch of white noise machines in the cube farms. 95% of her coworkers like it, because it drowns out the noise of 100s of workers all doing different noisy shit.Of course there is 1 guy who is on a crusade to have them shut off, despite the fact that they're not much louder than an older model HVAC system and have cut out the sounds of nail clipping, apple biting, etc.Her only complaint is that they make her sleepy, since we use white noise to put our sons to sleep at night.

White noise machines would definitely be a plus. There are only 12 people who work in my area, but there are no cube walls. When four other people have walked in and there are five different conversations going on, loudly, plus someone tapping their feet, plus someone slurping their tea, plus someone laughing out in the hall--I have to fight the sensation to get up and run away. It's pretty overwhelming. Noise-canceling headphones are my only salvation.

I finally had enough with the humming dude today and got up and asked him to stop humming. He absolutely refused to believe I could hear him. I'm like "you're right. I just randomly got up, walked over here, and am asking you to stop doing something that I don't actually know you are doing, but that you just happen to be doing".

How do we feel about email signatures? I don't personally care for them, but I don't generally notice them if someone does have one. One of our assistant principals sent out a staff-wide email saying that HR has decided that some of our staff are in violation of the "acceptable use of electronics" policy by having a quote as an email signature, and we are to remove them immediately.

^I used to work in marketing for a small design firm and can attest that it's best to have a policy that's "You can have X,Y & Z in the signature and nothing else"We used to have some designers with pages of crap they had added. Some would see legal text at the bottom of e-mails from clients, like it and copy and paste it onto theirs. Our "green" designers wanted to push every eco friendly thing we did into marketing materials and would have different color fonts all over their e-mail signature promoting shit. And don't get me started on the Acronyms.I was the only person in marketing and one of only 3 overhead employees. I was the only person in charge of brand integrity and it was losing battle. I finally just stopped when I got them to agree that everyone couldn't make their owns "additions" to our logo.

It is way past the point of just being late. Dude you're the head of the department but this affects my work flow too.

Sales rep in my subdivision has a computer that makes a SUPER high pitched whine.I leave the doors open to my office so I can hear the workers and if the inspector drives up, sales agent closes them.Boss coming down to "help" me, but really just getting peeved that I still have not learned the computer system.I was supposed to do a pre-drywall meeting with clients this week, my first one. I had it set up for 12:00 Tuesday. Boss was going to do it with me so I could learn. Boss emails at 11:30 and says he cant make it, so I have to wing the meeting myself, without ever having done one.

My signature is my name and internal extension. I don't really deal with outside vendors... And the handful that I do, I give a business card, or they're on-site contractors.And in reality, the large majority of the employees on site don't really need a full blown signature for the same reasons. You aren't in sales. You are not a support role... I don't need your address everyone knows where you sit.

On Wednesday, after I'd left work for the evening, I got an e-mail requesting that I call the person who sent the e-mail. No specifics on what they needed.The next morning, when I'm back at work and about to give this guy a call, I get another e-mail saying please call me today, but in the evening, since you didn't yesterday. Which, screw that, it was Halloween and I had plans.So after some more e-mail exchanges, during which he complained that he only had my work number and not my personal number, I ended up staying late today on a Friday at work, since this guy was so keen on getting an evening call.I gave him a call and he was like, the evenings aren't really a good time for me to talk, but all I needed is for you to e-mail me a meeting schedule for next month, which I was able to do in about 3 seconds.
