I made a light box today so that i can shoot my gf's yarn better. She dyes and sells it.








I only had two small halogen desklamps to light it with which blurred the shadows and caused some white balance issues. I think if i get a big bright 90watt CFL which are 5500k it'll work a lot better.

yup, lol. The camera was mounted of where it obstructed my view and didn't see it till the last second. I tried to stop, but slided sideways pretty much through the whole intersection. you hear me say "opps" lol.

I don't know, my bike doesn't have a HUD at the moment. broke it in my last accident and never got around fixing it. I really didn't push the bike very much since I was more worried about my camera than the bike. The camera and lens is worth double...

Danny, those pics look really good, nice job. Just a note, the small hearts vase exposure if off by a little bit, but everything else is spot on.

just a couple of the many shots i got friday while out doing some more diamondback surveys. the group caught a total of 16 diamondbacks for the day, 9 of which were mine. 5 of the 16 all came from one stump!!! watch your step!

the largest of the day, i walked up on this big boy sitting next to two smaller females near a nice stump, and 2 small males emerged from the grass after we caught the first 3. This one was just a hair under 5 ft, and something like 2.8kg. ended up being a recapture from last year, one of three i found piled together. one of the two females he was with last year was caught with him again on this occasion.

the day was so crazy that there was no way i could pull off a shot of each individual, especially since we had to take data on every one we caught.

TWW - Should I go for the following:

the Sigma 30mm 1.4 HSM

or wait for

before everyone starts taking pictures tomorrow, remember, compensate your camera by +1 stop. You can do this with either exposure compensation or manually set your shutter and aperture. Lets see some cool snow pictures!

I thought it was better to underexpose digital photos though, so you don't have blown highlights and lost detail. You can always correct for exposure later.

if you rely on your camera's meter, which is based on reflective metering, a subject that is white will give you a false reading. Not only that, but the fact that white snow is very shinny, it will reflect even more light and again give you a false reading. This is due to the fact that with reflective meters, it's based upon getting proper exposure from 18% gray so if your scene is all white, it will underexpose the scene to make the whites look 18% gray.

And yes, if you can't get proper exposure, it's better to underexpose a digital photo so you don't blow out your highlights. Effectively you can go -2/3 or +1/3 from the original exposure with no recourse, but you can save pictures that's -2 stops under exposed or +1 stop through some processes if you shot in RAW. You can't do too much with just a JPEG.

jlancas03, i would and will be getting the Nikon 35mm. The Sigma i good, and would be the only choice if youre FX or planning on going full frame, but the new 35mm is nice and compact like the 50mm F1.8D, autofocuses, has round aperture blades for a nice bokeh, and one reviewer who got it early says its fantastic optically and even sharper open than the F1.4 Nikkor. And its cheaper. sold.

I picked up a Tiffen Orange 15 filter the other day. It isn't intended to be used with color photography, but I couldn't resist.


On Ash Wednesday, I had to go to noon mass for some footage.


Joe is a goofy dude. I was trying to show him the distortion caused by shooting at 11mm, and I hit my camera on the ceiling. This was his reaction.

Well, my Powershot A570IS isn't a dSLR, but I'll post these anyway since it's the only setup I have for underwater usage (the video feature is an added bonus). Can't afford a good dSLR underwater setup right now. Housings + strobes = $$$$$$


I spent this weekend cave diving at Peacock Springs in Florida. Got some decent photos and video, I think. These are straight out of the camera, just resized.

Off to the side I found some cool light beams coming in around some rocks...



I tried to get division between the bright rays of sunlight streaming into the cavern (photos were taken around noon on Monday) and the blackness of the interior of the cavern zone. Didn't turn out quite like I wanted, but it will suffice.



Last view of the cavern zone before rounding the corner into the cave zone (with the differentiation between cavern and cave being that you can still see natural light in the cavern zone).

Taking underwater shots is quite a challenge, especially using very low ambient light with a point-and-shoot, due to their lack of light-gathering capabilities. Trying to either hold position in the water column or plant yourself onto a rock while not stirring up clouds of silt in the process (thus pissing people off who want to dive in the crystal-clear water...) can be challenging at times.

lol. Only other photographers would notice this trend so it's ok. It's a sweet shot even if every photographer in Raleigh has taken a crack at it. Every shot will be a little different, so it's actually pretty interesting to see the various interpretations of that scene.
