meh, who wants dual core. Quad core should be here by years end.

Quote :
"Myth. Most applications don't take advantage of two cores (many are working on it), and Google hasn't released any code that was explicitly written for dual-core phones, but Motorola has and I'd imagine LG did too."

Even so I doubt it's all that optimized. There was talk of additional optimization with Gingerbread from motorola but even then I doubt it'll be all that noticeable without the underlying Android framework being optimized. Believe Ice Cream is where Google is supposed to bring added optimization but who knows when phones will actually receive that update.

HTC would get much better customer reviews if they would let the customer decide between standard and extended batteries at time of purchase. (maybe an up-charge for extended but not $60)

People get pissed off that they have to buy a larger battery to get through the day with HTC android phones. (especially ones that work out and about during the day, not at a desk near a charger)
The ext battery is $60 I beleive....thats a lot on top of a $250 HTC thunderbolt.

Also where the fuck are the OEM cases to fit with the OEM extended batteries?

By take full advantage I mean like how on my Windows dual-core PC, all the apps I use on a day to day basis can only still use 1 core because their shitty developers haven't made the app so that it uses both cores and makes the app faster.

Sure, my OS (windows) can try to best manage which core any single app runs on, but that's not quite taking full advantage of both cores, in my mind...

I don't know how much of this applies to Android because there's no process manager I can see it all on but from what I gather from reading some devs' insight into it, it seems to be a similar state of affairs right now...

yeah, load balancing is the big one. You don't want one core going wide open while the other isn't doing anything. I doubt you'll notice a huge difference in day to day use on a phone either way though besides possibly helping battery life and and reducing heat by being balanced.

moved from UltimateDroid to CM7 after hating CM6

Makes my 1.5 year old Droid feel like a new phone, definitely the smoothest build i've tried yet AND i'm seeing huge battery gains even with certain performance-based tasks

So I read somewhere that they aren't planning on releasing any updates to the Fascinate. Any truth to that? I'm still stuck on 2.1, should I go ahead and install the unofficial 2.2 release?

They're still "supposedly" working on trying to get 2.2 on the Fascinate but who knows when it'll come. It takes like 5min to update to Froyo using Odin.

Any ETA or known devices to get Netflix streaming? If any at this point

ITT: Android app, so probably any new Android-based handset should be able to run it. No ETA or rumored devices to have it by default at this point.

gotta have a phone with DRM to steam Netflix

which seems dumb since you should be able to login to your Netflix account and that alone should be able to verify that you're paying for the service

But apparently you have to have a device with physical DRM

They're working on a solution for Snapdragon devices. The leaked app from a couple pages back actually streamed at one point until Netflix realized what was going on and they shut the service down. They're so worried about pirating when really all we want to do is stream anyway. IM SO GONNA HAX NETFLIX AND RECORD THIS EP OF MAD MEN ON MY SD CARD!

That is what the U-Verse app does. It downloads the episodes to the SD card so you can watch it later. The carrier insisted on it functioning this way, because they would prefer you download it over WIFI at home and it is unlikely for you to be able to sustain a live stream over 3G.

Let us pray that when Netflix finishes its work that it will function in a similar fashion.

I don't know if this is a Droid question, a Gmail question or an OWA question, but it's not worthy of a new thread.

Does anybody know how to forward my work OWA emails to Gmail so I can get them on my DX?

You could go into your Outlook or OWA and setup a forwarding rule that forwards all messages to a specific email address, ie your GMail address

But all of the emails would appear to be from your work address, not the actual sender, so my advice is to add the Exchange or POP3 email account specifically to your phone

that's what I was thinking too. i can check my work OWA on my phone, it's just that I'm lazy and I want to get notifications when i receive a work email

and the only solution i could think of is routing those emails through gmail

i've never had a smartphone, but i'm eligible for an upgrade and am ready to make the leap

i'm on verizon and if i upgrade now, it would be either the thunderbolt or the droid x... but i'm wondering if it would be worth waiting for the hardware upgrade and 4G capability of the droid x2 (may release?)... it seems kind of silly to get a phone (droid x) that has been out as long as it has

i'm mainly leaning toward the motorola camp b/c of reported battery life (better than the thunderbolt)... this thread leads me to believe that htc's UI is better than motorola's, but i've never owned either, so i'm thinking i'll just like whatever i get

Doubt the Droid X2 will be LTE. No way they want 2 LTE Motorola's competing against each other with the Bionic coming. As for battery life, you're probably going to see a significant drop on any of them with this being your first smartphone. HTC's SenseUI gives more eye candy and is smoother operating in general while Blur probably has the worst reviews of any of the manufacturer UI's. The Bionic will be the only LTE phone with a significantly larger battery (1930 v 1400 on the Bolt) but the other advantages of having an HTC over Motorola negate the battery and dual core at least to me anyways.

ok, wasn't sure on the lte for the x2 - i've read both that it will and that it won't... i guess at some point they'll all be built that way, so we'll see

for now, i guess i'll go look at the x and the thunderbolt in store to get a feel for the ui

thanks for the input

you realize the problem your app is solving (or task it's completing) has to be easily threadable to take advantage of multiple cores, right? playing music, sending mail, sending texts, are inherently single threaded tasks that you aren't easily going to "distribute." a kernel that pre-emptively queues and calculates the battery consumption of putting another task on one core and maxing that core while powering down the others vs the performance hit of not aggregating the load with configurable parameters would be the starting point imo

Anyone else hate the Facsinate? I LOVED this thing at first...but it has slowly turned into a nightmare. It's slow and unresponsive at times, and about every other day it goes into freak-out mode where the screen turns bright white and/or gets all distorted...only way to get it to go away is to power it off and back on. WHY didn't I just wait for the Iphone?

Never really had any issues with mine granted I was on custom roms most of the time. I upgraded to the Thunderbolt and haven't looked back. Looks like the Epic may be getting Gingerbread but who knows when.

i love my fascinate, but like ptty above, i am on custom roms. I got sick of waiting for 2.2 so I eventually just rooted it and used custom roms to get it.

it's a good phone if you remove most of the crap and find a good custom rom.

I would root and install 2.2, except that I have no idea how. I figured it would be easier to just wait for 2.2 to roll out to the fascinate, thinking that it had to come soon...that was 6 months ago.

The Fascinate is probably one of the easiest phones to root and go to 2.2. Install Samsung drivers, download odin, download desired rom image and flash. I would hazard to say it's almost fool proof and they have all-in-one packages to go back to stock. Only reason it isn't 100% fool proof is that someone is bound to be dumb enough to choose Phone instead of PDA in Odin and have a bad day.

It depends if you like the touchwiz experience or are more of a stock android person. The first is the fully bloated EB01 froyo leak with Touchwiz, Bing and everything else most people hate. The second still has Touchwiz but is debloated meaning no Bing, Blockbuster, etc and is also deodexed which allow you to download/install themes. The Superclean roms are closer to stock android with most of touchwiz removed. I'd probably go with option 2 initially and then maybe go with a Superclean version later. Do note that the Odin packages completely wipe out everything (apps, data, etc)

If I factory reset my OG Droid, is this going to completely remove all of the software which I've installed since activating it? (This is actually what I want to happen.) I've never done this with a phone before and I've never messed with custom ROMs... my Droid is being slow as hell now and I figure the best thing to do is start over again.

So is the Bionic gonna be nixed? http://phandroid.com/2011/04/14/is-verizon-passing-on-the-droid-bionic-in-favor-of-the-motorola-targa-rumor/
