I've heard a bunch about it being pretty unstable. My boss was trying to show me an app on his and the thing completely locked up while he was swiping through the apps on the home screen.

Agh! I just went back to 3.01 (losing all my downloaded mail and old SMS in the process) so I could keep my tethering and now I have to go back to 3.1 to get MMS?Then again I have only gotten 2 MMS in the last year so it isn't that much of a loss.Just confirming that there aren't any configs that will turn on tether in 3.1, correct?
9/25/2009 8:16:20 PM
you don't have to be on 3.1 for MMS. i had MMS for the last week or two without it. you do have to find a .ipcc file that enables it though. i think there's a link to how to do it on the previous page.
9/25/2009 8:17:25 PM
about 25 min delay for receiving MMS on my end
9/25/2009 9:52:19 PM
Been using it the later half of the day. Been messaging/testing with two friends, one with an iPhone one without. No delay what so ever. Both were on AT&T though. Might be a delay with other networks.
9/26/2009 1:21:20 AM
yaymy high-tech phone can do something my free phone could do 6 years ago
9/26/2009 9:46:07 AM
i figured someone as smart as you would have a better argument.it's been possible on the iphone for a long ass time..at&t has been stopping it.and yea, the delays i've seen are when dealing with other networks. nearly no delay using at&t
9/26/2009 10:48:22 AM
ohyou actually have oneremind me not to post when i'm half asleep/hungover. sorry, haha.

^^ wasn't mms just added earlier this summer when 3.0 came out? i just find it strange that a phone that can do so much lacked something so common. oh well, im not really bitching since ive sent maybe 3 mms messages in my life.one thing i have noticed is that ever since I did the carrier update this morning, my iphone locks up ever hour or two. when I press any button to turn the screen on and unlock the device, the screen doesn't turn on. i have to reset the unit (hold off/home buttons). anyone else notice this?
9/26/2009 9:40:57 PM
there were hacks to get it pretty much from the beginning. it required 3rd part apps and jailbreaking, though... and even then unless you could find someone at AT&T who would turn MMS on on your account then you couldn't get it to workbbbut yea, i NEVER understood why it wasn't on from the beginning. it's not like they've done anything with the implementation that was overly complicated or has any other kind of wow factor that deserved the 2 year delay
9/26/2009 10:00:44 PM
my understanding is that MMS as a protocol is pretty crappy, and perhaps Apple and the carriers were trying to encourage the use of email to send photos and stuff.so i can kinda understand that, but the implementation they came up for MMS (send you a text with a random login to view the photo at viewmymessage.com) was ATROCIOUS[Edited on September 26, 2009 at 10:42 PM. Reason : .]
9/26/2009 10:40:31 PM
agreedi read an article that actually said that once. that they were trying to get ppl to use email instead of MMS for that very reason.there was no excuse for how horrible that mymessages.com bullshit was though. whoever implemented that idea should be fucking fired and shot in the head. at least make it a link with the username/pw built into it so its one tap.
9/26/2009 10:52:52 PM
if they wanted everyone to use email instead of SMS they'd send your phone emails instead of SMS

So, I just got my iPhone a few days ago and have had some problems. I'm wondering if I should try to trade it for a better one or just deal with it. First, the phone didn't recognize some apps after plugging it into the computer, no big deal, I might have found the cause I just wasn't aware of.Secondly, it's froze twice on me since I've had it. Just from hitting a button once, I let it sit until it finally clears out. Like for instance, when I tried to record my voice greeting, after recording I pressed stop but it didn't do anything. After letting it refresh I had to go back and do the entire voicemail set up again. There was another time when I hit some button and it got stuck, seemingly. Then today, my phone just turned off. It was at half battery so I know that wasn't the issue. I hadn't dealt with it for a few hours but when I plugged it into the charge I became suspicious when it didn't make it's usual noise. I hit the home button, the power button, and then left it on the charger a few hours to see if maybe it died. Still nothing. Finally I Googled it and was able to turn it back on by holding the home button and power button at the same time. Are these just typical problems of the iPhone or should I go back to AT&T and ask for help/a replacement?
9/27/2009 12:49:09 AM
common problems after the 3.1 update.
9/27/2009 2:37:07 AM
Updated to 3.1 last night after getting the MMS text from AT&T.It bricked my phone. Now I'm in the Apple store in Wilmington, DE. They tell me the phone is out of warranty and it's going to cost me $399.00 to get a working phone. This is my 3rd iPhone 3G since last August. I've had this one for 3 months. Now waiting on a manager to raise some fucking hell. How in the fuck is it right that I have to pay three hundred and ninety nine dollars for a new phone when it was THEIR SOFTWARE UPDATE that broke it? I may have to cause a damn scene in here.
9/27/2009 1:25:50 PM
was your phone jailbroken or anything?but you’re right, it’s not right for you to have to buy another phone if the update is what killed it.
9/27/2009 1:29:54 PM
hell no, this is my business phone. I've never done anything out of the ordinary with it.
9/27/2009 1:38:56 PM
agreed..it's absolute bullshit if they make you buy another one
9/27/2009 1:41:14 PM
I got a "one time special replacement" and a "special 90 day warranty" so this will last me until i qualify for the free upgrade. Needless to say I'm going to be moving to another platform if this shit ever happens again.
9/27/2009 1:45:35 PM
^I got the same deal for my friends iPhone and that was because I cracked the screen and it stopped working. All I had to do was walk in say "the screen no longer works" and the guy took the phone to the back and came back with a new screen free of charge. I've never seen that kind of service anywhere else.
9/27/2009 5:07:41 PM
9/27/2009 5:59:35 PM
so i guess it was only a matter of time until this question came up but.. now that MMS is on the iPhone, how can I hide or file a photo that I receive via text? I mean it's not one I really want to delete but I don't wanna just leave it for anyone to come across... basically just need something so that someone doesn't accidentally run across it
9/27/2009 7:49:53 PM
lock your phone?
9/27/2009 8:18:02 PM
lol duh but i mean more of my friend says hey let me see your phone i want to [insert iphone activity that he can't do on his phone here]so i would prefer i can let him play games or whatever on my phone without worrying what he finds
9/27/2009 8:29:42 PM
you can save the images that someone sends you via MMS to your photo gallery and then email it to yourself or upload it to your computer.
9/27/2009 9:36:08 PM
yeah, if you're that concerned about it then leaving it on a phone that you apparently lend to friends is retarded.
9/27/2009 9:37:26 PM
^^yeah i realize can do that.what i'm saying is that if a girl sends you a scandalous pic via MMS, and you don't want to put it on your computer necessarily but you would rather not have to delete it, is there an app to help? Something to password protect your photo gallery, store files elsewhere on your phone, etc. I let friends play games on my phone if we're hanging out waiting for something like being in line. I have iTunes DJ set up at my place so I let friends use my phone to request songs on the playlist during parties, etc. Point being I don't want to have to worry that when I hand someone my phone that when they're messing around and checking it out / doing whatever, that they won't stumble upon said photo
9/28/2009 2:55:31 AM
No.
9/28/2009 9:35:15 AM
Idk anything about what apple lets you do for storage, but if an app can use as much storage as it wants it would probably be pretty simple to create something that could move stuff out of the normal storage places (photos, contacts, videos) and put them into encrypted storage used by the app.
9/28/2009 9:39:52 AM
^^^There's a few apps that do exactly what you're saying. Check out Picture Safe, Photo Vault Pro., My Eyes Only, PicVault, etc,All these allow you to move pictures from your photo album into password protected storage. Just search for "Photo Vault" in the app store.^^I'm assuming you didn't even search for one. Try out one of the dozen or so apps that does this. Save the MMS pic to your photo album. Delete the text pic. Then use the app to move it from your photo album to password protected storage. [Edited on September 28, 2009 at 10:35 AM. Reason : ,]

ok so they have voice control to call people, and google has an app for you to search by voice...when will i able to speak emails and texts? or does it already exist... hopefully without an app.
9/29/2009 8:42:31 PM
^doesn't exist without an app yet. Not sure about with an app though.I know you can do the voice over if you setup your 'accessibility' options but then it changes how the phone works entirely. Not sure if it supports voice to text though.
9/29/2009 8:59:10 PM
^There's an App, called Jott. It works pretty awesome, and the service isn't just for the iPhone, it works from any phone, or PC.
9/29/2009 9:06:47 PM
Jott supports putting the voice to text for sms?
9/29/2009 9:47:03 PM
ill have to try it outthats all i really care about...voice to textoh and side note, i tried that $2 "red laser" app and it's badass. scan a barcode and get the lowest internet prices for that item.that and if you like a good tower defense game get "geo defense swarm." really nicely done.mr. ahh is fun for a whilekill-a-ton is like scorch, but better (in most respects)trapster is cool for seeing where the cops hidesomafm has a great iphone app if you're into that kind of musicand slacker rocks as always]
9/29/2009 9:56:44 PM
geo defense swarm is enjoyable. It is very tough after the easy levels which is good i guess but frustrating also

9/30/2009 9:10:03 AM
so you can jailbreak 3.1 but there is no redsn0w so therefore no cydia correct? Has it ever taken them this long to roll it out?
10/1/2009 4:37:42 PM
I just updated to 3.1 and my battery has disappeared about half of what it used to be...does anybody know why?
10/1/2009 10:27:26 PM
^ You know, I think mine did that too...
10/2/2009 12:09:28 AM
Does anyone here have redlaser?
10/2/2009 10:55:03 PM
