what did WRAL do to their radar? It is so smoothed out and cartoony... plus the intensities do not match up with the nws radar

got a question for you weathernerds.

Why don't weather people use other radars to eliminate the feedback around their primary radar? All the time I see "rain" aka noise around radar sites and it seems simple enough to use another radar site to correct the incorrect data around another radar site.

I can't speak for WRAL or any other station, but we do and we don't. In this case, it looks like the NWS is running a mode that is picking up even the smallest particles like dust and bugs. We can use other radars, but sometimes it doesn't give us the best look. For example, I wouldn't use the Wilmington radar to pick apart a storm over Raleigh since it would be shooting way too high into the cloud, skewing our view.

Now, on our radar system out here, we increase the "filtering" scale to eliminate some of the lower dBZs, or smaller particles, so we can focus more on what is likely reaching the ground.

thanks.

How much does one gain from having a filter be less stringent? It just seems to add a bunch of noise that's difficult for the consumer to see through, when you actually have weather in the area. I mean, I can tell it's just noise right now because it's blatantly obvious (because it's not raining outside and the look of the data on the radar is indicative of noise).

I didn't think about the radar data elevation from other sites being a problem (not that I really know much about this), but I figured there were likely several radar sites around that even rival stations could share data to improve both their products.

As far as turning down the filtering during active weather, we use it to monitor cold pools rushing out of thunderstorms. These cold pools are like mini cold fronts or what we call "gust fronts" or "outflow boundaries." They can go on to develop other storms downwind. For us on the plains, we use it to watch a boundary called the "dryline", which is nothing more than a wind shift and dew point gradient most times. The dust kicked up along them shows up very well on radar and gives us an idea where storms may develop.

Now, in addition to the NWS radar near Clayton, I know RDU has a terminal doppler that monitors the weather close to the airport and each of the stations (not sure about NBC 11) have their own radars...or two. Those would also give another good look.

Weather report sounds fun tonight:

Quote :
"Variably cloudy with scattered showers and storms likely especially late this afternoon and into the evening. Highs in the mid-upper 80s. Some of the storms that we see develop today could become severe. The threats we are watching for are damaging wind gusts, large hail and perhaps a few isolated tornadoes."

NE Cary off Harrison Ave.
Made it to 0.50" in just under 20 minutes. Rate has tapered off significantly, and I'm at 0.73" so far.
