^That would be awesome too! That sort of happened under the old system when Terry Labonte won the title. He won 1 race and finished in the top 5 in every other race. Jeff Gordon won something like 13 races that season, but had some bad finishes mixed in there too that cost him a lot of points.

If Truex is in the top 4 entering into Homestead, and it's difficult to see him not at this point, unless shenanigans occur in the race, his car has been so dominant on 1.5-milers, that unless someone or some team is sandbagging, that's his race to win and he'll be champion.

^^terry won 2 races that season, but he did have over 20 top 5 finishes including 7 runner up finishes. The fall charlotte race was the decider that season. Terry won and jeff finished 31st. Back then, thats like over a 100 pt swing. Terry won the ship by 37 pts

their stage caution plan is end stage, commercials, pit stops, commercials, restart. can't do that in a quickie caution.

You make a good point, but I still say that needs to be tracked electronically and just let the race keep going. IIRC they used to give a $10K reward for leading at the halfway point in the race and they never stopped the race to make a big deal out of it.

Fine with that. These pit crews were spending money dling research to design the super-fastest air gun. Money should not be spent on cars when they're stopped, it adds nothing to the show.

by that logic, we might as well get rid of specialized pit crew teams and just let the mechanics service the car for a set amount of time. as long as they get off pit road in that amount of time, they keep their position. that would save teams a lot more money than standardizing the damn air wrenches.

just add some more stages and get rid of green flag stops altogether.

^It will probably come to something like that. NASCAR needs to realize changing all of these rules and making NASCAR look different is not a good way to keep fans interested. NASCAR is starting to look like the beginning of MLS. They changed the standard rules of soccer to try to make non-soccer fans interested. Instead, soccer fans quit watching and people who never watched the sport still didn't. The crowds got bigger and interest in the league grew once they went to Standard FIFA rules.

If you ever do a deep dive into timimg and scoring over a race distance, you'll see there's a handful of drivers -normally the lesser drivers on the big teams - that for on track plus minus, don't pass anyone or are small net negatives, but they entirely live off their pit crew to move up the field. Indycar publishes full race timing and scoring stats and I've played with them a bit for a couple races. Not sure if NASCAR does but just from watching races, I feel the same phenomenon exists there.

From watching Formula 1, I have a negative opinion of relying on your pit crew to move you up the field. All it does is provide the driver a reason to not race.

If Daytona and Talladega were owned by anyone except the owners of NASCAR, they would've quit racing after Allison's crash or been required to significantly change the race track (like less banking). Talk about containing costs, I wonder how much money gets poured into a specially-designed engine that gets used 4 races out of 36. Meanwhile, the only costs to the track owners and NASCAR is a flat piece of metal with holes punched into it.
