You can't deny someone employment based on the fact that they're transgendered, that is a violation of federal laws protected under sex discrimination.

Trans people aren't being targeted and beaten on the streets in 2015. Yes their lives suck because they have to surgically attempt to be something they aren't, but the "Transphobia" is pretty much just anonymous comments on the internet being blown out of proportion, weird looks in public, etc.

Also, all of this is dependent on the trans persons DECISION to have surgery.

Yes they are.

It happens all the time. If a person hates gay/transgender people (or really any minority) they'll find any excuse to get rid of them. Here's a story where a software engineer came out as trans and went from a six figure salary to homeless. You'd think that her skills and being in the liberal DC area would protect her, but I guess not.

have not read the thread. good job for bruce/caitlyn to live the life they want. I feel sorry for family members who might be thrown aback by it (is this the case? i don't honestly know. i don't read too much into any tabloid type media.)

but I have read so much blowback from people who are not personally involved... time to turn off your tv and internet.

As a man who supports personal liberty, I am not the most well read in the LGBTTQQIAAP community/continuum, but as a point of principle, a person should not be put down or discriminated against because of who they are, who their brains tell them they are, or who they find attractive. (even if the majority doesn't understand their natural point of view)

Does there need to be some deep seated reason for the particular side I take in a given internet argument? Why don't you ask the oddly staunch gender traditionalists why they care so much?

Quote :

Kind of like how weed possession is a violation of federal law? Semi-serious question. I'm not familiar with enforcement of state law vs. federal in that case or this one. But surveys of trans folks generally return pretty high numbers wrt varying kinds of discrimination. And many states do not have anti-discrimination laws for trans folks.

there are different types of courage. of course the most obvious is the person who goes to fight a war and put his/her life on the line and possibly die or become wounded for our protection and national interest, (and make no doubt about it, the people who have done this have my utmost respect and are undoubtedly personal heroes) but there is also personal courage... courage to take steps to become the person who you know you are in the face of an entire society who doesn't understand your plight.

Sure, but I feel like there's a difference between being beaten indiscriminantly for a rolex or cellphone or argument (which can happen to trans folks too) and being beaten specifically because someone feels their fragile masculinity and heterosexuality is being threatened because they just accidentally flirted with a trans person. The latter is inextricably tied to the victim's identity. I'm not saying the former is fine and dandy but violence based on marginalized identity is a different type of fucked.

I've been in some pretty crazy places myself. But I sense a theme here of people who, through no fault of their own, are coming into the concept and awareness of the transperson population, and they don't understand. Condescending assholism isn't the best way to teach tolerance.

Such an unbiased source

I read the link, 8 trans people were killed so far in 2015. 7 out of 8 were black trans woman. I'd say it was more likely they were killed because they had prior arrest records, were lower-class citizens, were black, etc.

The articles also say "there was a 32% decrease in reported hate crimes... but uh, that doesn't mean there is less hate this is a national crisis we need money and legislation still!"

This narrative that trans violence is a "national crisis" is bullshit. Fortunately for this link though, black on black crime IS a national crisis, and some black people happen to be trans.

Clifton who?

Again, I wish for every transgender person to be able to live their lives without discrimination or violence performed against them. But to call this a national crisis? That just lessens the real problems they face, because this is nowhere near a national crisis.

Calling this a national crisis is just laughable, and goes to show how far these knights in shining armor will go to push an agenda.

Several pages back...but what the fuck kind of special facilities do we need for a transgender?? They'll just go to whichever bathroom of the gender they have chosen. If they don't have adequate plumbing to use a urinal, then they can use the toilet.

It's always about something or someone threatening tax dollars with this crowd, so I'm sure it was just a blanket statement he made before thinking it through. If it's not taxes, it's guns. If it's not guns, it's state's rights. It's about sizing up threats and living in fear of change; regardless of whatever that change may be. Just laugh at it.

You don't want them in the bathroom they feel comfortable in. You don't want them to have their own bathroom either.

The handicapped should just drag themselves up the stairs I guess. Waste of tax dollars to put in ramps for such a small number of people.

that's not what I said...I haven't expressed any stance, and I really don't care if they go in female bathrooms, provided they have vaginas or at least are outwardly indistinguishable from women. (and vv)

^^while that's really apples and oranges, how many women do you think will be okay with former men using using the same bathrooms and locker rooms? I'd be willing to bet that a decent percentage would be pretty uncomfortable with it. Are you speaking for the majority of women when you say that people shouldn't worry about the bathroom situation?
