I've got some SH as a hedge and will occasionally buy some SPY puts when I think I might want more.
11/12/2014 10:30:14 PM
I can't imagine owning SH, other than for very short terms...like hours or maybe a few days.I want to buy something VIX-based and just sit on it, then sell it when the VIX spikes...wait for things to calm down, then buy more and do it again.[Edited on November 13, 2014 at 11:38 AM. Reason : ]

Yahoo up 40% for me since BABA. uh...should I cash in?
11/17/2014 4:41:30 PM
planning to get in on the HABT IPO tomorrow - riding the DL wave today but got in late @ 16.85
11/19/2014 1:10:08 PM
^ Did you get in on HABT pre-open market? If you did, how does one do that?up over 100% already
11/20/2014 11:52:58 AM
i didn't - i got in via my order shortly after open beucase my limit wasn't high enough from the basic reserach i've done in the past you have to have an account with the right brokerage firm - etrade / fidelity / etc have IPO offerings from time to time - they usually require a minimum of ~500k in the account to participate as well
11/20/2014 12:17:09 PM
Yeah, got in on the Visa ipo and FB b/c of family members with UBS and Morgan Stanley accounts but they've since started managing their money themselves so no IPO goodness for me anymore.
11/20/2014 1:18:10 PM
hell of a rally at the end of the day - ended up 15%
11/20/2014 4:27:27 PM
Aren't there mutual funds geared solely for IPOs and mergers? Since us average investors cannot get in on these first day rallies, maybe a mutual fund like that will give some exposure to those gains although I'd imagine those funds are boom or bust.
11/20/2014 9:46:44 PM
What's to stop you from getting in on one of those first day rallies?
11/20/2014 10:07:49 PM
I certainly could not get in on BABA or HABT. I guess I am not special.
11/21/2014 9:08:50 PM
Uh, I got in at 92.70, its at 110 with a 52 week low of 82.81
11/21/2014 9:36:47 PM
I had to travel to the LA area back in 2012 for work and ate at one of these places and it really was a damn good burger. Better (but not drastically) than Five Guys and certainly had that "California everything is fresh and organic" type of flavor/flare to it.

anybody have any particularly strong opinions on 3D printing companies? Thinking about picking up some DDD or SSYS. I know there's some talk about HP entering the space and what not, but I'm of the mindset that the next 6 months to a year could start seeing both commercial and personal 3D printers becoming more and more commonplace.
11/22/2014 1:52:15 PM
I bought about 50 shares of DDD last year at $46. It soared over $90 by January. Then it tanked in 2014, currently at $34ish. Should've doubled and sold..I'm still in it for the long haul and will keep buying shares over the next few years... Cool technology that I think will make good profits.
11/22/2014 8:43:20 PM
I've been eyeing DDD for a couple months or so. Nearly bought at 40 but hadn't (and still haven't) done a lot of research on the narrative.
11/23/2014 12:09:51 PM
It's going to be a long time before they're commonplace, I just think it won't be that long before a lot of us know a guy who has one. I could see my dad getting one so he can tinker in his free time. The super early adopters got makerbots already, but the next wave of early adopters are gonna grab them soon. It's just a matter of when somebody does something cool enough with one that people will see their potential. It's already sort of happened with the plastic gun parts, but I'm looking for that broader aha moment item or application.I think it'll start with things like enthusiasts of various stripes who need them to make things that they can't find (car collectors, home modelers, reenactment dorks, etc.), eventually high end shops will start offering very high levels of customization for various products, soon someone will figure out a way to 3D print things in a metal (probably aluminum or titanium) and that really will be a game changer for a lot of industries. We're still a long way from matter compilers like "The Feed" from Neil Stephenson's The Diamond Age, or Star Trek's Replicator, but they're not out of reach. People are already working on something like them for pharmaceutical applications. It's going to be industrial and commercial applications growing first, but eventually it will move into the home. That's why I'm more interested in the guys who have been doing this for a while and have that existing market locked down.[Edited on November 23, 2014 at 1:38 PM. Reason : wgsgs]

Bought $5k of UVXY (2x leveraged VIX tracker) one week ago. Sold today for 7% profit.
12/1/2014 4:19:05 PM
anyone planning to take part in the lending club ipo? anyone that has an account with received an email saying that they'd have some shares allocated to them (didn't say how many but i'm guessing based on amount invested currently) and that as long as they were fully paid for within 3 days of the ipo[Edited on December 2, 2014 at 7:22 PM. Reason : 350 shares were offered - planning to purchase all]
12/1/2014 4:22:28 PM
UVXY back down today...I'll probably buy back in tomorrow as long as it doesn't spike on the open or something.I need to find a better vehicle for this...something with less contango effects to potentially get bitten by. I'm sure everything has some negative that can get you, though.
12/2/2014 10:50:43 PM
^^ Yes
12/3/2014 2:58:03 PM

Buying funds on margin is like taking out a loan for several days, so they charge interest on that.I frequently buy on margin so I don't have to have cash just sitting around idle in the account.
12/12/2014 12:26:06 PM
This is my understanding...charges interest for margin trading => this is just when they loan you money to make trades and charge you a fee for the loan. So say you want to borrow $1000 to buy something; they will charge you say 5% on that loan. I have yet to do any margin trading.interest on cash balances => similar to money in your savings account that collects interest
12/12/2014 12:26:39 PM
How much trading do you guys do that you are excited about the new app?I probably only do ~ 6 trades a year.
12/12/2014 12:29:15 PM
will end at about 200 this year
12/12/2014 1:02:45 PM
Damn, are you buying mostly or selling/buying?Is this just in your brokerage account?
12/12/2014 2:11:00 PM

12/12/2014 2:55:31 PM
I make about 100-150 trades a year doing short term trading in a discretionary spending investment account, so no fees could save me close to $1,000 per year. Im not going to let that pass me by. My results have been skewed by my recent gain on TRUE but Im up about 17% this year using short term buy/sell.
12/12/2014 2:58:42 PM
Guess you guys must have more disp income. After 401k + IRA I'm usually tapped out
12/12/2014 3:44:08 PM
17% after commission? I'm up 13% but due to lack of time only had 30% of my capital deployed the entire year. The bulk of the gain was from Apple.
12/13/2014 10:05:23 AM
is there a way for my to transfer my stock holding from one broker to another? like going from Optionexpress to Etrade?
12/13/2014 12:13:51 PM
its easy. the new broker will do it if you give them the account numbers.
12/13/2014 12:57:59 PM
I've got 2 invites to robin hood if anyone wants to jump to the head of the line. Pm first come first serve.
12/13/2014 7:30:54 PM

12/16/2014 11:52:57 AM
got in on BLCM at open at 24.56 - gamble of the day
12/18/2014 10:28:46 AM
Yesterday, there were 450 thousand people ahead of me. Today I got an email stating that my invite would be here within 24 hours.
12/18/2014 9:31:33 PM
I'm up 16% (14% + 2% dividend) and all I had to do was invest in a simple market index fund for the low cost basis of $10. I'll take hat every time
