John Dwyer just released a record by this old New England noise band called La Machine.

It's halfway between Suicide and Neu, just bass/drums with half spooky, half silly dub vocals.

I like it a lot.

New Gauntlet Hair is meh.

the new love language is streaming on pandora. have given it a few spins now and it is growing on me after initially being put off by the first single. also, looks like this will be the first hopscotch we won't see them around.

really like the new Hot Chip and Sylvan Esso EPs

new Camera Obscura album really grew on me after listening to it a lot. "I Missed Your Party" might be the worst song ever though.

The Red Wing is an incredible song, but I'm a little disappointed with Fuck Buttons... that's probably just because Tarot Sport was so good.

He's got great vibrato. He legitimately was the world junior whistling champion when he was a teenager. Was on Letterman and shit.

The songs are better. The production choices are more interesting. The album as complete thought is much more cohesive. Most importantly, unlike Contra, it's not boring as shit.

Yeah, I'm in that boat too. I enjoyed the first album okay enough and thought Contra was fairly forgettable, but I LOVE the new one.

i strongly recommend some of you revisit Contra

other than Diane Young, i put pretty every song on Contra above anything on Modern Vampires of the City

regardless, the only post-millennium band with a stronger first three albums is Arcade Fire, i think

(which reminds me, i never listened to the last Titus Andronicus album, what the fuck)

Contra sucks. "Diplomat's Son" is the only track worth paying attention to.

wat

I like Step and Ya Hey a lot. Unbelievers too.

but yeah Giving Up The Gun and Horchata are pretty rad.

I always thought California English sounded kind of bumbling and awkward. I like the chorus though.

i've only given MVofC some cursory listens so i was kind of talking out my ass

my real point was that Contra is legit, wasn't trying to cast aspersions of anything else

I also think VW is the best band of the lately but their new album is better than Contra. Suburbs > Neon Bible too

California English was so forgettable on the album but sounded amazing live.

new Dads EP is a underwhelming :/ 3/5

Geology (mewithoutYou bassist) EP is a decent listen and pay what you want on bandcamp. 3.5/5

new dismemberment plan and mansions albums are probably my most anticipated that are left in 2013. I'm sure I'm forgetting something though.

top 5 records for me so far this year (not in order):

vampire weekend - mvotc
kanye - yeezus
daft punk - random access memories
the national - trouble will find me
disclosure - settle

also, i kind of agree with grayson on his point about Death Grips. i just find that situation really, really funny and kind of awesome.

Anyone listen to Candy Claws?

Checking out the latest one now: http://candyclaws.bandcamp.com/album/ceres-calypso-in-the-deep-time

Their 2nd didn't do a lot for me but their first one from 2009 is fun too: http://candyclaws.bandcamp.com/album/in-the-dream-of-the-sea-life

Dream Pop/Shoegaze mixed with Animal Collective with beachy, psychedelic overtones if I had to describe it.

And actually to add to that, throw The Olivia Tremor Control's Black Foliage into the mix of sounds that I hear on this latest album (although, it's probably the more beatles-influenced portions of OTC that I am hearing here)

Just finished my first listen-through and I really enjoyed it. Definitely recommended for anyone who enjoys any version of dream pop, shoegaze, or lo-fi psychedelic indie.
