I have a right-of-way question for you... In the scenario below, who would have right of way: the blue car making a U-turn, or the green car making a right turn?Context: The blue car has missed the exit to the beltline (not well marked for travelers going outbound on Western), and could not u-turn at the next light (no u-turns at the blue ridge intersection). The next available u-turn intersection is this one, and there is a left-turn lane cut out of the median. I have heard from one cop that the blue car would have right of way, since it is already on the main road, and the green car is on a secondary road with a stop. I have heard from another cop that the green car would have right of way because u-turns generally yield to right turns, and the green car would be expecting the blue car to make a left turn, not a u-turn. What say you? This is actually important, since I deal with the situation on a daily basis.

The plane will take off.
7/14/2012 1:34:39 PM
^^U-turn yields I would think... How is the right-hand turner to know that you are about to do a u-turn?
7/14/2012 2:30:02 PM
I, too, think the u-turner would yield...but that's just a guess.
7/14/2012 2:37:35 PM
i think since there is no traffic signal, the blue car has the ROW since they're on the main road and green has a stop signif it were a protected left turn (arrow) for the blue car and a right turn arrow for the green car, then the green car would have the ROW[Edited on July 14, 2012 at 2:47 PM. is the car considered still travelling on the highway if it stops and changes directions?
7/14/2012 4:21:50 PM
additional point: many vehicles can't make a clean u-turn at that intersection if there is a car stopped at the stop sign (meaning the car stopped at the sign occupies the space that the u-turning car needs to make a turn without reversing and maneuvering around the stopped car).

how about some interesting questions instead of drivers ed stuff

is that the new chevy caprice police car?
7/14/2012 11:09:54 PM
I live off Deboy St. so I am glad TenaciousC asked that question...My question is, you see people on TV give consent to have their vehicles searched when they have drugs in their car. Do you think these people think you won't find it, they are afraid they are admitting guilt by refusing the search, or they are just plain stupid?

What is the most polite way to say "I don't consent to anything and will challenge any probable cause justification you use in court"?

if i am selling a vehicle to a dealership and the vehicle has an expired registration, and you pulled me over while driving to the dealership, would you let me off with a warning? trying to sell one and dont want to get it inspected and registered just to drive it for 20 minutes to sell it
8/20/2012 9:23:19 AM
Don't get pulled over and you won't have to worry about it.
8/20/2012 10:37:13 AM
you can get a $5 registration at the DMV for this exact purpose.or don't get pulled over.
8/20/2012 10:38:31 AM
Get somebody to ride your ass on the way up there so the cops cant see the tag.
8/20/2012 10:41:33 AM
wasnt planning on getting pulled over^^talked to somebody at the DMV a couple hours ago and they said as an NC resident i'd have to get a 'real' registration and the only temporary registrations were for out of state people who were buying a car, not selling
8/20/2012 11:17:17 AM
You should be able to get a trip permit - for people who need to transport cars that are unregistered/not inspected for the purposes of obtain those services.
8/20/2012 11:59:36 AM
How freaked out does it make you if a person you pulled over gets out of their vehicle and locks the doors?
8/20/2012 12:03:11 PM
You have to have insurance no matter what, make sure to add the car back on your policy even if you are driving it right down the street. You are better off caught with no registration than no insurance.
8/20/2012 12:03:58 PM
8/20/2012 12:13:12 PM
Tree, I KNOW I've picked up a temp registration, because you can't get an inspection without a current registration and you can't renew a registration when you don't have it inspected. I've had to go this twice for my mother in laws car, get a 5 day registration or something to get it inspected to get a real registration renewal.
8/20/2012 12:54:49 PM
Bump. I'm bored.
8/20/2012 8:55:23 PM
Have you ever given ride-alongs and if so, how/what was your experience like?

What's the deal with the "Not in Service" police car that's always driving up and down Atlantic Avenue. The lights are covered with a yellow cover and it has big "Not in Service" stickers on the side.
8/20/2012 9:24:14 PM
May have been asked already:What's the deal with leaving police cars at gas stations and random other places all day? Everyone knows there's no cop around.

This came up while I was driving around w my sister yesterday. What to do in a scenerio like this ( and I have seen this happen on Forensic Files too, she was kidnapped, raped, and killed):He rams into the back of my car at a stop. And my intuition, after considering all things, that this was intentional. Do I,1)Stay in my car and call the police 2)If he starts walking toward my car, drive away or stay calm and see what he wants3) Drive to a well lit place bfore exchaning anywords or anything else

How many people man the non-emergency line? They never want to talk to me.
