I don't get why they think spelling it "Rawlee" is somehow derogatory towards State. It makes them sound like the ignorant wal-mart fans they are.
3/16/2011 9:48:03 AM
I could understand some one from up north using rawlee as an insult. But a unc-ch fan saying it just makes them look ignorant and redneck since rawlee is their state capital.

Its a matter of proximity. Do you think the Nets are moving to Brooklyn to be able to compete with the Knicks or the Raptors?
3/16/2011 11:42:11 AM
I think Lowe has proven that we can attract top tier talent without necessarily going head to head with duke and unc for the same targets.
3/16/2011 11:43:39 AM
i understand that we are physically closer, but i don't think that it makes a difference. it's not like we play them more often. most years we only play duke once.
3/16/2011 11:44:00 AM
I think you're grossly underestimating the power of intersecting fan bases. We hate Duke and UNC because we know a lot of people that went to or root for those schools and they rub their success in our faces. With Maryland and GT, they may know a couple of Duke or UNC fans, but its not like they're bashed over the head everyday with endless media coverage or have their sporting goods stores lined with endless merchandise in various shades of blue. Seeing that every day makes our hatred grow infinitely stronger. And as far as coaching goes, you're always going to be compared to your neighbors, which makes the State job one of, if not the the toughest jobs in the country[Edited on March 16, 2011 at 11:52 AM. 3/16/2011 11:50:34 AM
my point is this: proximity makes it no harder to win in the acc, or win in the tournament. and that's really all that matters.no coach here is going to get fired or run off if they can win the acc every now and again, and do more than just make the tournament. now that in itself isn't easy, but i don't think any school should be satisfied w/ a coach that is incapable of winning their conference.it's nice to beat duke/unc, but a bad record against those two was just the icing on the cake for sendek, and had nothing to do w/ lowe.now that i think about it, if anything it makes this job easier. you can succeed in two ways; the normal way or by having mediocre results but beating unc.[Edited on March 16, 2011 at 12:09 PM. 3/16/2011 12:08:16 PM
the way I see it, we should bring in a young, proven, badass coach (a Sean Miller, Brad Stevens type) who will set a foundation that will shift the power balance once Roy and K leave. They are getting up there in age, and I could see either or both of those programs coming back to earth once their respective coaches leave.
3/16/2011 12:20:20 PM
^and the reality of it is, Duke and UNC have darn good bball programs and when they're only losing 5 or 6 ACC games each year combined no matter who is coaching is going to have a poor record against them. But there are going to be comparisons to Duke/UNC or K/Roy for whoever the next State coach is just because of the proximity of the schools and fanbases...
3/16/2011 12:20:36 PM
Duke and Carolina are never going to fall off. Not unless they make terrible hires after Roy and K are gone -- and that won't happen because, well, they're Duke and Carolina.
3/16/2011 12:22:02 PM
I'm sure that was said about Indiana/UCLA basketball and Notre Dame in football at some pointI do agree that they are capable of making a good hire, but UNC did bring in Doherty, and Duke has never had to deal with replacing K, although I'm sure Collins or Dawkins would carry his torch once he leaves.[Edited on March 16, 2011 at 12:24 PM. The Doherty years at Carolina were pretty damn awful by UNC standards.[Edited on March 16, 2011 at 12:28 PM. Reason : .]
3/16/2011 12:25:40 PM
Indiana fell off because they fired the greatest coach of all-time. That's not going to happen to too many schools. UCLA has a championship since Wooden left and Howland has been in three Final Fours in the last six seasons, not sure how they've fallen off. And Duke isn't all K, they were in three Final Fours before he ever got there. They have more money than anyone and the K tree is strong, they're set for a long, long time.
3/16/2011 12:29:54 PM
Duke/Carolina will never fall off. Too many big $$$$ donors willing to pay $Texas for anyone

^^as long as Coach K has been coaching, you'd think he'd have a bigger/better coaching tree. * Tommy Amaker (Seton Hall, Michigan, Harvard) * Bob Bender (Washington) * Mike Brey (Delaware, Notre Dame) * Jeff Capel (VCU, Oklahoma) * Johnny Dawkins (Stanford) * David Henderson (Delaware) * Quin Snyder (Missouri, NBDL Austin Toros)That's not what I would have guessed. Just for shits and giggles here's Herb's coaching tree: * Charlie Coles (Miami University (Ohio)) * Jim Christian (TCU) * John Groce (Ohio) * Larry Hunter (Western Carolina) * Mark Phelps (Drake) * Ron Hunter (IUPUI) * Sean Miller (Arizona) * Thad Matta (Ohio State)
3/16/2011 1:43:32 PM
Pitino's legacy when you take into account Herb's guys, Tubby, and Billy Donovan is >>>> K's legacy.[Edited on March 16, 2011 at 2:24 PM. Reason : ;]

^^^I really don't think K's coaching tree is that bad. It's funny that Herb's seems a little better, but you just can't really measure these sorts of things. And I think K has a couple good assistants in Wojo and Chris Collins (mostly Collins) who are going to make good coaches one day. I think Collins takes K's place when it's all said and done. The question is whether he goes off and does his own thing for 5 years, or just steps right into the shoes from down the bench. But Roy Williams' "tree" is abysmal. Stallings and Turgeon is about all he has to write home about. So I think they will probably have to go outside the Carolina family...which will be very interesting. There is definitely nothing even close to another version of Roy Williams waiting in the wing.
3/16/2011 3:20:47 PM
i don't know how you can feel confident that you've successfully distinguished and evaluated the different assistant coaches at duke.
3/16/2011 3:32:27 PM
3/16/2011 3:51:11 PM
I have to think Collins takes another job before ascending to the Duke throne. He'll be 40 in a few years and K still has a lot of coaching left. And his father still coaches in the league, fwiw.
3/16/2011 3:53:31 PM
^I think the same thing:
3/16/2011 4:08:15 PM
All we would be doing by hiring Collins is giving him some OJT so he's ready to take over for K.
3/16/2011 4:10:53 PM
i always forget how old coach K is due to the fact that he dyes his hair.
3/16/2011 6:00:57 PM
I want to say Roy is 60 and K is 64 but I might be wrongI don't think either of those two programs will ever, at least in the next 10 years or so, "fall off"but at the same time, they're bound to take a step backK is one of the best college bball coaches ever, I don't think Collins or Dawkins is necessarily going to keep them at the high level that K has over the last 20 yearsAnd while Roy might not be the best X's and O's guy, he is one of the best recruiters in the country, and even though UNC basketball can kind of recruit itself, my point is that K and Roy are GREAT coaches...not easily replaceable
3/16/2011 6:57:09 PM
They will become Notre Dame football. They will not be great but they will still get all of the attention and will be really good from time to time. They will still be NCAA tournament teams but won't be winning or contending for championships 10 years from now.
3/16/2011 7:02:42 PM
I hope they become SMU football

Duke's gonna take a pretty big step back after K I think. No one is gonna want to follow him and even a successful coach certainly isn't going to win 30+ games and the ACCT/regular season every. single. year. And he'll be constantly reminded of that. So I think in a lot of ways it's a very unappealing job. UNC after Roy would be that way to a lesser extent.
