we came back from like 20-something downi'm proud of this team, not rolling over and dying at the sound of a stiff fart (IM LOOKIN AT YOU CHEEZBURGERS)
1/16/2010 2:17:24 PM
I can't be mad. Good effort guys. Love the heart. We won't have to play a press like that again for the rest of the year unless we get Clemson in the ACC Tournament.
1/16/2010 2:17:27 PM
Crappy loss, but I'm not devastated. That was a fun one to watch.
1/16/2010 2:17:38 PM
1/16/2010 2:17:47 PM
yeah you gotta take from this game that we're not laying down and dying like we were the last year or so and we're weeding out some of the riff raff (horner) and starting to get a more cohesive more talented team. Add in next years class and I think we've got a solid team then
1/16/2010 2:18:16 PM
tough tough loss. can't be mad but a few calls or a halfway decent first half and we win this one.
1/16/2010 2:18:49 PM
nope...shouldn't go for the 2. after coming back like that, you need the 3. they've been blocking down low all game... we ran the risk of turning it over on that drive (almost happened)and/or getting it blocked...go for the 3 and hope for a rebound
1/16/2010 2:18:51 PM
1/16/2010 2:19:04 PM
howell did some serious growing up this gameIs it me or does wood shoot absolutely awful in the RBC center?dude has put up some stinkers at home and shoots lights out during away games
1/16/2010 2:19:40 PM
i've seen just as many basketball games as you guys...and i've seen MANY times where the player (usually ncsu player) is going for a 2 like that and ends up turning it over. i'm just saying...if he had ended up turning it over and we would have never gotten a 3, you guys would be saying the same thing
1/16/2010 2:20:03 PM
BDub Bilas with the final say on strategy hereAlways go for 2 until you need to go for three....its end game 101
1/16/2010 2:20:10 PM
Obviously disappointing to lose, but I feel good about the way we played. We looked like a real basketball team. probably the best we've looked all year.
1/16/2010 2:20:34 PM
wood shot well. he just didnt get opportunities. you really cant expect him to put up FSU numbers every game. he should have hit the wide open one on the scramble drill, though.
1/16/2010 2:21:22 PM
1/16/2010 2:21:45 PM
man. another close loss this year. ugh. these arizona, florida, clemson type losses are making me sick.
1/16/2010 2:22:42 PM
...also, I feel like we just added a new player to our roster in Howell. He hasn't been much of an impact until tonight. Looked good on both ends of the floor.
1/16/2010 2:23:27 PM
Disappointing loss, but good to see this team has heart, and will fight to the end. But, like I tell my 11-12 yr. old team (also named the Wolfpack), you have to play a full 40.
1/16/2010 2:24:08 PM
Cept for the fact he got every other shot by that African on the other team
1/16/2010 2:24:15 PM
If wood had hit that three from the scramble on the floor, and if howell hadnt been blocked...ohhhhh if only
1/16/2010 2:24:26 PM
Here's what I have to say... This is the most fun state team to watch under lowe. With a little experience, we win these games.Horner needs to sit, his ass plays hard, but he just sucks and can't play D.Howell gives a little pump fake and we might actually win... Tracy hits a FT and the end has a different feel.(I love watching Carolina suck so far again too)

I knew i saw this somewhere. The RBC and scott do not like each otherNot including this gameSW 3 PT Shooting at Home (9 Games) - 13/47 (%27)SW 3 PT Shooting on the Road (8 Games) - 21/43 (%48)

^ He was actually recruited as a PF with an outside game. We will see what he ends up producing but he doesn't have an ugly shot.
1/16/2010 2:46:56 PM
damn, Sid called out Javi and Dennis in the post game interviewalso questioned the calls on Scott that were legitimate blocks ... gotta be careful with those remarks
1/16/2010 2:47:49 PM
^^It's not an ugly shot, but he looks really hesitant when he shoots it. It's like he holds the ball over his head a little bit longer than basically any confident shooter does, and it can't be great for his accuracy.^What did Sid say?[Edited on January 16, 2010 at 2:49 PM. Reason : .]
1/16/2010 2:48:34 PM
When absolutely no one is around him like the two shots he put up today? I don't have a big problem with it. I can't find it anywhere, but I seem to remember someone mentioning how he was a decent 3 shooter in high school.
1/16/2010 2:48:40 PM
^^Action, Sid basically said that we weren't getting the production we needed from the point and from the 4 spot, also indicated that he wasn't impressed with their defense and hustle (especially Dennis getting rebounds)He went on to say that it really hurts the rotation when he has to leave everyone in for extended minutes, but it seemed like he was only comfortable with Julius & Richard at the end.[Edited on January 16, 2010 at 2:51 PM. javi definitely should've been out there for the end.

Not reading this thread, but I am hopeful we caught a glimpse of what Sidney Lowe basketball might look like at NC State. He made the adjustments and got his guys to attack the Clemson pressure in ways UNC could not. He obviously has had a learning curve, and it is taking some time to get the talent in place but hoping particularly with the additions of Harrow, Brown, and Cothron we can do the things he would like to do.
1/16/2010 3:55:58 PM
1/16/2010 3:57:28 PM
I have actually been pretty happy with Sidney's teams when we get solid play out of the point guard position.
1/16/2010 4:00:28 PM
^ and we have some good ones lined up for the future
1/16/2010 4:05:30 PM
this is year #1 of sids players at the helm.the last teams were more of what sid could do with leftover princeton players running his stuff. (think horner this year except with the whole team)coming from the nba sid didn't have a class with him when he started.
1/16/2010 4:09:23 PM
Solid effort by the guys today. Good to see them play hard until the end and even better to see that Lowe recognized Horner is playing like shit against ACC level competition. I felt like there were several very questionable calls in today's game and that if we even have half of them go our way, we win. Regardless, there's a fight in this team that hasn't been there since Lowe's first year team's run in the ACC tourney. I was also glad the crowd around the tunnel sent the guys off to a round of applause. I don't want our young guys getting down on themselves just when they are starting to play quality basketball. One of these days luck is going to go our way...hopefully sooner than later considering I just sacrificed a goat to Jimmy V in my back yard
1/16/2010 4:36:43 PM
had this game happend last year Oliver would have been playing his backups with 7+ min left and we would have lost by 15-25
1/16/2010 4:42:40 PM
1/16/2010 4:43:59 PM
you must be blind/retarded.
1/16/2010 5:07:45 PM
I actually enjoy watching us now. I don't know what to think about our long-term prospects, but at least things are interesting again. I just wish we'd go over the top in a couple of these and make the NIT so I can feel a little more confident.
1/16/2010 5:29:31 PM
there are no moral victories. Damn i wish we had a finisher. a got to guy like hodge that you know he is going to get a shot off or hit the open man. "when we hongry we eat"
1/16/2010 5:48:16 PM
a side note: Harrow and Leslie were at the game sitting behind the players. I couldn't tell for sure from the other side of the court but it looked like Lo Brown was sitting beside Harrow as well.
1/16/2010 6:04:40 PM
I saw Harrow on TV but I didn't recognize Leslie or Brown. Goddamn I hope we manage to land Leslie somehow.
1/16/2010 6:18:19 PM
i went to watch Lorenzo Brown play in annapolis today. he was not in raleigh. he had a bunch of assists and his team won by about 40

From Howell's Highschool days "#74 Scout, #59 Rivals, #60 ESPN) definitely caught our eye as someone who may be a bit of a sleeper relative to where he’s ranked. He’s a slightly undersized big man with a great frame and excellent strength for a player his age, but he brings a very high skill level to the table on top of that. Howell likes to play facing the basket, where he can put the ball on the floor with a spin move into the paint, or knock down a flat-footed and slow-developing 3-pointer with very nice consistency. He also has good hands and a nice feel for playing inside, and showed off a solid drop-step move inside in addition to a pretty turnaround jump-shot. Howell is just an average athlete and doesn’t seem to play all that much defense at this stage, but he looks like a really nice prospect for Sidney Lowe at N.C. State, especially in that system" So apparently a 3pt shot has been part of his arsenal for a long time. In today's college game a long range shot + dribble drive are almost required from the PF position so I for one hope Howell keeps putting them up if they leave him wide open. It is just the idiotic announcers who rip on him for that I guarantee if Sid had a problem with it Howell wouldn't be doing it anymore. Sid does work on the refs during the game and has gotten Technicals in the past because of that.
1/16/2010 6:36:20 PM
Howell shot 3s all the time in HS but he didnt make many of them. If I had to guess from anecdotal evidence, I would say he shoots somewhere in the 20% range. That's not good enough for college. They should be last ditch efforts his frosh year while he works on his shot. Maybe he can bust it out late next year but you really don't see many PFs come in and shoot 3s as freshmen unless they're Horner-types or guys who go pro in 1 year
1/16/2010 6:54:40 PM
How does this
1/16/2010 7:54:46 PM
that is what I estimate him shooting from the HS games I saw. I think I saw Wheeler play 4-5 games last year which is more than that NBA scout probably sawI didnt mean 20% either, I meant in the 20s. I would say probably 25-28%
1/16/2010 8:30:09 PM
^ I take it back then I didn't realize you had seen him first hand in high school thats pretty cool. If he can get it above 30% I would be all for him continuing to shoot if he stays in the 20's I am with you. Was he this bulky in high school or did a lot of this weight come with the knee injury? I also noticed we outrebounded Clemson. I am loving that we are not consistently getting blown out on the boards this year. That is huge and a real testament to the effort these guys are putting into the game.
1/16/2010 8:42:55 PM
He was a beast in HS but that was mainly because there aren't a ton of teams with guys who'll be playing PF or C in D1 in high school bball, even in the top level of Georgia. His team won the state championship and I thought he was the best overall player on the squad but it wasn't like he carried them (Ari Stewart of Wake played better in the championship game and arguably has more upside but if I had to choose one to take for college I'd pick Richard). I am actually surprised he rebounds this well - he certainly wasn't poor but it didn't seem like he dominated the boards like he has from day 1 here.Their team had solid guards as well so they didnt pound the ball to Howell as much you might expect given his size advantage. He did do very well in the fast break (Wheeler runs a full court press most of the time a la Clemson) and I thought he would come in and help us there and even bring some passing prowess similar to McCauley. We've seen some of that though I think his dribbling is going to get him into trouble once teams scout it - he handles way better than most guys his size but he has to look down while dribbling and it's a little out of control. With regards to his size, he was big but not enforcer big. It did look like he was lumbering down the court at times but I heard he's had back problems throughout his career so that might've been part of it more than his weight. I actually hope he doesn't lose too much weight as he gets back into shape. We need a guy who'll just throw his body around and bang down low. That was something he was never afraid of doing in HS despite having an outside game
