It’s stopped snowing here by Crabtree about 45 minutes ago and hasn’t started back.

the real storm won't start until around midnight and will go through most of the day and evening tomorrow. this was just a very small band at the front.

this is nowhere near over. it's hardly just begun.

Yeah, this is going to go on through tomorrow night. Small dry pockets don't mean anything. But for the record, it hasn't stopped in Cary yet

yeah, it should really start filling in from the SE overnight. i haven't really looked at too much, but 6"+ is very likely with a storm like this. plenty of Gulf moisture to tap into.

what amazes me is how cold it is going to be in Raleigh the next few days. a decent possibility for single digit lows overnight on Sunday. again, i haven't looked at too much model data, but that is an exceptionally cold outbreak for a system that didn't seem to originate in Canada.

WRAL reporting that Trailwood Drive is shut down near Avent Ferry Road because of snow and ice on the hill.

WRAL is reporting that the huge blob down by florida panhandle (a "convection" as they called it) is going to prohibit anywhere near the forecasted levels of snow from falling on NC

its that giant blob down there - the meteorologist (not fishel) said it was convection and would break up all the snow that is headed our way

meh, huffman already fended that off, says convection can add to precip just as easily as it can take it away.

maze doesn't know his arse from a hole in the ground. did they predict Durham would get 2 inches by 9 PM? no. WRAL has no clue.

"I have also heard some make mention of the worry that Gulf convection (storms) will rob the area of moisture transport and thus reduce QPF amounts. I have attached a graphic courtesy of research done by Mahoney and Lackmann, showing the two scenarios for this. The first is when the convection races out ahead of the surface front and then serves as a block to moisture transport in the Gulf and reduces QPF, meaning the models will over predict precipitation totals. The second scenario is that the convection stays close to the surface cold front and thus ENHANCES the low level moisture transport ahead of it, which would be downstream in the Carolinas. As of now scenario 2 seems to be playing out."

Its wild. In Charlotte Huntersville has a few inches while 10-12 miles south we just have a dusting. The forecast disparity is pretty big too.

I've got at least two inches on a porch table here in Raleigh, right next to State.

Looking forward to what else may come.

The forecast is a fail so far, unless we're supposed to get a ton more later. The ratio is always more like 5:1 in terms of forecasted amt and actual. It looks a little like the storm is moving on quicker than expected and we'd be hard pressed to see that 8-10". I'm in RM and we've got abt 3"

I'm not a meteriologist tho

yeah, elizabeth said it'll be done by lunch. Fail fail fail

I don't think the power will go out, because there's no ice on the trees or other towering structures right now.

It must have rained, or been windy at some point last night.

so whats the deal with all of the news outlets saying we'll get snow/sleet all day today, even though the radar shows that the storm is about to be past us in the next couple of hours?

are we supposed to get some more moisture after the big mass passes?

I'm trying to understand that as well. WRAL mets were saying that the large band to the south east is going to "wrap back around over the triangle." So, I guess the moisture will rotate back over us again?

Once the moisture source switches over from the Gulf to the Atlantic there could be some reformed precip.

It's never stopped sleeting here in Durham. You can start now to see some stuff reforming to the south and west.

That's about the same as in Cary. Although, it's much more snow now than sleet, which is opposite of what it's been all day.
