Just thought it couldn't hurt to give you guys a heads up, if your tech company is currently hiring (or will soon be) entry-level and intermediate technical writers/communications/marketing/copywriters or anything even remotely related I'd love to hear about it. Yes, I know that barely qualifies as "tech jobs," but I know a lot of you share a workplace with non-engineers. Salary doesn't really matter. Thanks! [Edited on November 27, 2012 at 5:24 PM. ^ yeah, it's because there are people out there who still blur the lines, though. To me, there's a difference between a web/frontend dev - someone who may build a non-trivial app using backbone.js and jquery for example, versus a web designer - someone who will take a photoshop file and turn it into structurally semantic block of code and provide UI-level behaviors. Sometimes you can get crossover between the two, but I think on the spectrum people will lean one way or the other. As an aside, there's a group in my center who wanted to hire someone "design-minded" last year with HTML/CSS skills, but who was also a full on Java dev, familiar with Spring, Struts, and GWT, while also being fully-knowledgeable in SVG & Canvas. We told them good luck looking for their unicorn.

If anyone is looking to make minimum wage OR get a small minority stake in a startup for doing probably all the work, check out this message I got from somebody I don't at all know on facebook:
2/11/2013 9:15:42 AM
you should check out the product and the price point they want for it. It is pretty amusing.
2/11/2013 3:16:38 PM
Yup. The guy is charging certain hospitals $125k/month and he's going to pay you minimum wage.I'm wondering if there actually is some functionality here or if the whole thing is a facade. Since none of the pages beyond the pricing page work, I'm leaning toward the latter.[Edited on February 11, 2013 at 4:38 PM. Reason : naw, I think the guy was honestly trying]

For those of you with big boy/girl jobs in the industry, how long did it take between applying and hearing something back from the bigger companies out there? I'm graduating in May, so I'm applying to different companies, and I have no idea what to expect in terms of whether/when I'm going to hear back from the likes of Apple/Facebook/Google/etc.
2/12/2013 9:35:09 PM
I work at Cisco. I applied for several positions in late April/early May. Didn't hear anything till early July, interviewed late July/early August, got an offer first week of September.
2/12/2013 10:09:25 PM
^^ what is your skillset and what does your resume look like? I haven't waited more than 2 weeks to hear back about an interview but I've never applied for anything entry level, which most recent grads target. I did my own thing before I ever applied to some place else. Apple, facebook, google, and amazon have fairly high wages for interns and you might start there rather than a traditional entry level.
2/12/2013 11:27:55 PM
Microsoft seems to take a week or two, from application to interviewGoogle, 5-6 week interview process is standardIBM is 2-4 weeksMost start ups seem to be 1-3 weeks.
2/13/2013 1:55:36 AM
Question for people at tech companies:Does your company have in-house facility management, do you know anything about how they run capital projects? I do capital projects in another industry, I'd like to move to tech sometime and am just starting to look now.
2/13/2013 9:21:58 AM
It absolutely amazes me how terrible people's cover letters are. It's mind-boggling. All I want is:
2/13/2013 10:44:28 AM
What are you getting instead?
2/13/2013 10:53:51 AM
^^ That's pretty much the template I learned at NCSU. A lot of the humanities were a waste, but I def think tec writing was useful.
2/13/2013 11:08:20 AM
ugh, fuck cover letters
2/13/2013 11:12:00 AM
If anyone has any jobs opening up for a new graduate in CSC next December, please pass it along.
2/13/2013 11:28:19 AM
Are they including cover letters in the email or attaching them to the email? Or both?
2/13/2013 11:34:53 AM
A lot of our applications are coming through Stack Overflow, so when these people apply their cover letter comes as an e-mail to us. That said, we do get some direct as e-mail as well. Cover letter is always separate.
2/13/2013 2:44:43 PM
i should apply and have my cover letter just guilt you over what you left me withjust a few names and a sad face could probably do it

I keep getting asked the same questions about the job I posted ^^^ so I'm going to answer them here for anyone to see. That posting is for the entry-level positions, but we do have spots open for people with more experience or certifications. Your start pay is based on your certifications coming in and put you on a fast track through the training program. There is the potential for a substantial amount of travel. 50-75% travel is not uncommon, depending on which sub-team you are placed into/choose. There's also a chance for temporary relocation for medium- to long-term on-site engagements (6 months to 3 years). Relocation would be 1-2 years out, after you've been sufficiently trained. When you are not working on a customer project, you are being paid to work up to a CCIE. There's a lot of support and training opportunities if you are interested in becoming a networking expert. My team is where the other teams in Advanced Services look first when they are recruiting. So there's a lot of opportunity to move around to other groups within the organization. If you really like break/fix troubleshooting and want to be a master of a specific product, robster's job in TAC is perfect for that. If you want to be an expert in a broader subset of technologies and are interested in travel, PM me.Also, we do have several internship positions available if you are still in school.]
