^^ I think star trek really embraces the idea of an infinite number of "parallel universes"as far as what are they going to do with the next movie, I don't knowbut they can certainly place it by either putting a scene of Vulcan or the new Vulcan colony/homeworld so we can get our bearings[Edited on May 8, 2009 at 4:22 PM. Just got in and I really liked it. Being a fan of the original series and not so much TNG/etc I was a little worried going into it that they would fuck it up. I thought the casting was excellent. It did seem a little forced how the crew all came together, but its understandable seeing how they wanted the emotion involved in getting the original characters in a 2 hour movieOh and Uhura was hot.So was the green chick.
5/8/2009 4:21:40 PM
who the fuck likes TOS better than TNG?what are you... like 105?
5/8/2009 4:22:55 PM
I'm glad they didnt jump through hoops in order to restore the "proper" timeline.
5/8/2009 4:23:42 PM
TOS is some good TV programming.[Edited on May 8, 2009 at 4:24 PM. Reason : ]

i have a hard time getting into it without all the glitzy special effectsi'm simple
5/8/2009 4:25:37 PM
Doing well to suppress the nerd rage. At least they did acknowledge flat out "Yeah, we screwed with the timeline". Entertaining and visually awesome.
5/8/2009 4:27:16 PM
yeah the nerd part of me doesn't know quite how I feel about fucking up the timeline, but damn it was a badass movie.
5/8/2009 4:28:36 PM
Maybe they did it so that they can have a new generation of star trek fans who can get into these movies without knowing the original timeline and series of events. Its a good move. Now that we're on page 11 its time for some ***spoilers***:Red Shirt dies.**End Spoiler**[Edited on May 8, 2009 at 5:14 PM. Reason : -]

TNG was awesome when I was 8, it has not aged well at all though. TOS has aged much, much better.

I just got back and thought it was greatpardon the ignorance, but I thought this was a complete reboot of the series, completely independent of anything that has happened in the previous shows/movies

Being a fan of TOS, TNG, DS9, Voyager, and Enterprise, and having seen most every movie, I still liked it. Nice work JJ. Even my wife enjoyed it. WTF?
5/9/2009 12:32:18 AM
The timeline thing didn't bother me at all... I think it was a great approach.I missed the contemplative tone the past trek movies had though. The movie was good still though, although I think it would have benefitted from a slightly less action movie apprach.

Awesome movie. Two questions:1) How did Kirk get passed the test that Spock wrote at the academy?2) When the Romulan ship was sending the drill down to Earth, were there no federation ships in the vicinity that could attack it? You'd think that there would be tons of ships all over the solar system that would fly in to try and defend Earth. Considering how easily Spock destroyed the tentacle thing that housed the drill, you'd think it wouldn't be that difficult for a small craft to take it out.on a sidenote:Waitress at dinner: "You guys going to see Star Trek?"Us: "Yep"Waitress: "May the force be with you!"Me: *facepalm*[Edited on May 9, 2009 at 1:01 AM. Reason : btw, I like that they played the original music during the credits at the end]
5/9/2009 12:52:53 AM
^yeah that was kinda dumb, as if all the protection earth has is a few star shipsno rockets or f15'seven a granpa with a rifle could've stopped that drillotherwise great movie, kirk and spock were suprisingly good, story was aight, not greati think they could've setup a better story for the villainalso the space ship chasing spock instead of dropping the red goo on earth was kinda dumb
5/9/2009 1:03:05 AM
8/10, only negative I see is the villian was a bit bland, but other than that, I LOVE the new ship design, inside and out!For a second I thought the red matter stuff was going to be Omega particles/nerd[Edited on May 9, 2009 at 1:14 AM. Reason : ]

holy balls that was great. watched it at the IMAX theater downtown. it took them getting rid of everything done during the past 20 years of star trek crap, but they finally made a really awesome movie. this could have easily been something not star trek, and maybe that's why it works... non-fans can enjoy it, and not have to invest in knowing the background and history.
5/9/2009 1:33:00 AM
Did you notice when Old Spack gave the original opening speech at the end, they made it PC? Instead of "where no MAN has gone before" it become "where no ONE has gone before." It also became an ongoing mission instead of a 5 year mission.
5/9/2009 1:34:02 AM
^ it's been like that since at least STII, that's not new or news.
5/9/2009 1:38:14 AM

I guess I never noticed before...either that or I've been watching too many episodes of TOS recently so that's the only thing that sounds right anymore.
5/9/2009 1:39:43 AM
seriously, the first thing in my head when i walked out of the theater was "holy balls that was awesome." second thought was "thank god they didn't fuck up." third was "ok, get the sequel going already."

Given that the Romulan ship was 120yrs from the future, its no suprise to me that they could fight off any planetary defenses, Vulcan or otherwise... (besides, remember how puny Earth's planetary defenses were in Best of Both Words II?)
5/9/2009 4:17:29 AM
I am having a hard time with that.... First off, Nero's ship was a mining scowl, so why was it so well armed? I am assuming the answer to that was that it was all mining equipment. Secondly, I have a hard time buying that a mining ship today could take on the British Navy from the Revolutionary War and win.[Edited on May 9, 2009 at 7:34 AM. Reason : of course it could take the Navy on and then not win...]
5/9/2009 7:33:37 AM
Towards the end when the drill was on the Earth you saw all of these cadets fleeing the Academy - weren't they on all of those other vessels slaughtered at Vulcan? Same deal with the cadet meeting at the end of the movie. I realize all they did was film the scene from the end of the movie first and then film the scene where all of the cadets were sent to the shipyard for assignment, but still. My wife said it was probably all of the underclassmen, and I can accept that, but the cadet hall should have been nearly empty with all of the upperclassmen (sans the Enterprise crew) dead....
5/9/2009 7:39:04 AM
i really enjoyed it, 9/10
5/9/2009 8:00:23 AM
no one answered my question from earlier - are we to assume a completely new storyline, independent of all the other films, or is there really supposed to be a separate reality
5/9/2009 8:18:42 AM
^^That is right, the red matter containment field was onboard Spock's ship. We see them board his ship at Vulcan to extract the bubble necessary for the destruction of Vulcan and immediately launch it. They had not extracted another one yet for Earth, so when Spock took the ship, it became impossible for them to blow up Earth until they had retrieved the ship.
5/9/2009 8:44:56 AM
^^ Separate reality. They can keep making shows in the "regular" universe and anything that happens in this one doesn't effect them in any way. However, Romulus was destroyed in the regular universe, so that might have implications in future ST shows.
5/9/2009 9:53:55 AM
^^^if you watched the move, it's notable that the ship first coming through at Kirk's birth completely changed the timeline. Butterfly and monsoons, etc., and nothing is the same. It's a valid trek-like mechanism. They definitely gave Roddenberry a good swift kick in the balls though with the general lack of vision in the societal and organizational structures.I can't believe that people 200 years from now will act exactly like us, but with cooler toys. People 50 years ago were even different enough to be weird when you watch them in movies. It was a great action movie, but they should have found some way to not call it Star Trek. And at the beginning, when Kirk's dad was on the lift to the hangar bay, he comes down from the ceiling, but on the outside shot, the bay was at the top of the ship... where did he come from?[Edited on May 9, 2009 at 10:12 AM. Yeah, I had a couple problems with the movie. When they space jumped, why didn't they burn up in the atmosphere. I don't know how scottie got promoted to chief engineer right away. Wasn't there another engineer? I'd be pissed if i got replaced by someone who just beamed on the ship. why did the bad guy blow up the klingon planet. How did kirk put that all together so quickly to figure out it was a trap for the enterprisewhy is a mining ship so much bigger and powerful than even ships from the next generation.
5/9/2009 1:56:11 PM
IMAX trek was badass.i can't believe that the federation was a bunch of pussies (more so than usual).photon torpedoes are the size of an rpg? hardly.not having to tell the turbo lift where to go? why not transport between decks, as it took 2 seconds for spock to go from the hangar bay to the bridge.i still see sylar instead of new spock. not good.
5/9/2009 1:57:58 PM
^ill assume your questions were real. The bad guy blew up the planet vulcan, which is where spock was from to get revenge on spock for not saving his own planet like spock promised. That is why he left spock on the ice planet to watch vulcan implode.Wraith " How did Kirk get passed the test that Spock wrote at the academy?" All throughout the original movies Kirk is known to be the only one to have ever passed this test, the unbeatable test. He later admits that he cheated and altered the programing in one of the movies. This new one just showed him actually doing it.

the one thing i couldn't get past was how quickly ANY senior officer on the enterprise died, and how quickly it ended up that the flagship of the federation was piloted by a bunch of cadets.i thought it was an excellent movie, and has a lot of potential to revitalize the series. i'm glad they kept the part about how so many different nationalities were on the enterprise. they forgot the latinos though. the guy they had to play bones reminded me of the original a lot.a few "wtf" moments, like the entire scene on the ice planet, or the scotty trapped in the coolant tube episode, or the scene of young kirk driving the car off a cliff (although that did develop kirk's character)
5/9/2009 2:23:30 PM
did y'all notice how captain pike still ended up in a wheelchair, even in this new timeline?
