^ Meh, I think the fixie obsession for Peugeots and Bianchis is seriously overrated. I've converted 2 Schwinns thus far for this purpose (a Le Tour and a Varsity with a bottom bracket converter to a 3-piece crank), and even after riding others' conversions with comparable components, don't think one's better than the other. Anything with horizontal dropouts that fits you will do- my favorite commuter bike thus far has been my Le Tour with a 42-17 setup, with full fenders and cyclocross brakes.

I'd try to get that Peugeot frame for less than $200.

got the cadence/speed sensor for the garmin 305 today. Installed. Works. Its neat looking at all the graphs and Google earth to show exactly where you were. You can pretty much say 'that hill sucks' but you know exactly what you need to do to conquer it.

I just saw someone riding brakeless ram into a girl on a cruiser because they couldn't lock up in time, flip over her, and have the front wheel end up 6 inches from her head.

I'm really glad they're rolling it out, but it still definitely needs work. I checked some of my usual routes and found their maps were missing bike lanes in some places, and in others, were recommending paths with stop signs on every block over a path one street over that has a bike lane and fewer stop lights. I know they said they did some of the initial route testing and sanity-checking with Google employees, but I live in a city where Google has two offices, so they ought to be better here.

does anyone have any experience with a gps device for riding? my boyfriend is planning a 2 week cycling trip in japan and this would make a great gift!

-needs to be waterproof
-need to have long battery life
-needs to measure elevation & all that crap
-needs to support international maps

the idea is that he'll preload the routes he wants to take and the gps will guide him

i looked at a few garmin models & the 705 seems like the highest end one but wondered if any other models meet the criteria or if anyone has experience with these things?

actually after reading some reviews about he 705.. doesnt' seem like you can preload your routes? wtf

One of the girls I ride with swears by her garmin 305. It has all the stuff you mentioned. She even got the 405, but returned it to go back to her 305. Of course, she does alot of triathlon training, so it suits her to be able to wear it while running. I guess it's the running version of the 705, but it has bike attachments for wireless cadence and a bike mount as well. Plus it's alot cheaper than the 705 even after you buy the accessories.

and i didn't know bb had an app for this. i think his plan is to get a temporary international phone while in japan but i'm the tech nerd of the pair and will have to figure everything out and just show him which button to push haha

i have been wanting a bike gps for awhile so maybe i'll buy the 305 for myself to test drive it and go from there

The Garmin Forerunner 305 has no maps. It just records GPS tracks. You cannot pre-load routes. The Garmin Edge 705 (and 605) are map-capable. However, the standard maps are not very detailed. If you want turn-by-turn maps, you must get the City Navigator map software. You CAN pre-plan your routes and be given turn-by-turn directions if you use Garmin RoadTrip (Mac) or MapSource (PC). Edge 705 is a good unit, but definitely expensive. I have become reliant on it when cycling on unfamiliar roads.

Also, get the Forerunner 405 if you don't want to look like you are wearing a computer on your wrist.

I also had my first group ride of the year yesterday. Three friends and I took a fairly relaxed ride up and down the Pacific coast for about 30 miles... stopped at a coffee shop at the halfway point, had a drink and chatted for about 20 minutes, then saddled back up and came back. Got a bit too much sun, but the weather was gorgeous.

We did the ride to Chapel Hill from Durham this morning (25ish?) and stopped in Carrboro for lunch. Beautiful weather and a nice route down University. Since it was no drop, my friend hasn't been on a bike all winter and was slow. Not the best plan since we ended up climbing the Hill up Franklin St. Her butt should hurt big time tomorrow.

A brief updated on my Peugeot:

The rear derailleur is in bad shape. I ordered a Shimano Tourney as a replacement that should arrive next week.

The 5 speed freewheel was also a bit old, and I found a Shimano replacement on Walmart.com for $9.00. It's a 6 speed, so there's a chance it won't fit, but it's worth the risk for $9.00. My original freewheel is a 14-21, and this new one is a 14-28. Here's hoping it fits.

I've also discovered that the shorter chainring on my crank is custom, and it turns out it's way too small. So, I've got a decision on whether or not I should invest in an entire new crank or somehow try to replace that inner chainring. That may involve having to get a new bottom bracket and pedals as well, which I wouldn't mind doing. The problem, of course, is that I have a French frame, which means the bottom bracket is threaded to a French (or Swiss, maybe) standard. Velo Orange has a replacement French bottom bracket, but I have to see if it can work with new crank systems.

^The VO bb will work. Just make sure the crank you get is square taper with JIS taper (not ISO)
I would get a decent used square taper crank on ebay (should be able to find one cheap). You have a cottered crank and they are a bitch to work on.

6 speed freewheel should definitely work, unless you got stuck with a Malliard Helicomatic (in that case, you'll probably be better off using what you have or just getting another wheel.

If you can find a (non-cottered, ie square taper) spindle of the appropriate length, it might work with the current french bb cups. that would save you a little cash.
i did a kludge like this for an old Raleigh GP cottered-non-cottered switch.

there are a few different types and application specific bolts like you are talking about

while you might be able to make something that you find work, it is likely to need the brand specific piece....but post up what the model/brand is and i should be able to let you know with a little more certainty....or take a pic if not branded

the cheaper the bike, the better chance you'll have at finding a generic bolt to hold the brake assembly together.

You can probably get it to work with just a regular hex-head bolt.

New brake calipers for that kinda ride will run you about $12-15 at any decent shop. No, they wont work great, but might be better than trying to make it work with generic hardware

It's just called a mounting bolt.
And, as icanread2 said, you might be better off just getting a new brake. Or, if you have single-pivot sidepulls you could probably find a cheap dual-pivot on ebay and you would get a considerably noticeable increase in braking performance.
