Edwards earned nearly a half million as part-time hedge fund advisor

http://www.newsobserver.com/100/story/574713.html

Quote :
"Democratic Presidential candidate John Edwards earned nearly a half million dollars while working as a part-time advisor for a New York-based hedge fund, according to campaign report made public today.
Edwards, a former North Carolina senator, reported earning $479,512 as a senior advisor to Fortress Investment Group LLC last year.

During his last campaign, Edwards had decried "two different economies in this country: one for wealthy insiders and one for everybody else."

While campaigning in Iowa Tuesday, Edwards defended his work for the hedge fund.

"If you look at what I've done since the last election, it is true that I did consulting work for a hedge fund part-time," Edwards told the Associated Press. "It's also true that I started a poverty center at the University of North Carolina, that I led a minimum wage initiatives in six states -- all successful -- that I started a college-for-everyone program for poor communities in eastern North Carolina, that I helped organize thousands of workers into unions, that I did humanitarian work in Africa."

Edwards also earned $333,334 in royalties from his book on boyhood homes that was published by HarperCollins Publishers. He donated the money to charity.

Edwards also reported that he earned $40,000 from his position as director of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's Center on Poverty Work and Opportunity.

He also reported earning $415,000 in speaking fees, mainly to universities. He typically charged $32,000 to $40,000 per speech.

Does a guy have to be poor in order to champion the poor?

Since when is it a bad thing to make money?

Its not bad at all to make money.

When he claim there are "Two Americas", that the rich people are the enemy, and that he is a common man, then its a problem.

^ In reviewing your previous posts, I'm going to assume you're classifying this information as proof of hypocrisy. Either that or this info is supposed to distance Edwards in general from his fan base, the left, and from thos he's trying to help, the poor.

And you'd be wrong in either case.

[rant] - Yes I'm warning you ahead of time.

It makes absolutely no logical sense to chastise Edwards for making money. I've seen this pathetic excuse for an argument far too often, particularly in this thread. Yes, Edwards is rich. Damn near every politician is to a certain degree. Politicians almosta always get their start in lucrative careers. Nevertheless, not all politicians are conservative.

Wait.... what was that??

Yes, you heard me. So what if Edwards makes a lot of money? Does this exclude him from discussing issues based on poverty? Ooh ah, Edwards got a $400 haircut. Oh my! He's got a $6 million dollar house! He really doesn't care about the poor after all! Bullshit. He's got the money, he earned, and he's spending it the way he wants. Nevermind the fact he donated $400,000 in book royalties to charity, or that he's put so much time and effort into the Poverty Center at UNC for, lets face, pennies compared to the $$Texas$$ he could have earned from other available opportunities.

Edwards has had a lot of financial and political success. That does not preclude him from observing the drawbacks and outright flaws in the system (from his perspective). What he's trying to do is make the system better, even if it is a system he has used to his advantage.

If you disagree with Edwards' political stances, fine, I have no issue with that. I'm not saying I agree with Edwards. I'm not throwing my support behind him. I am however telling a few regulars in this thread to stop this dumbfuck rhetoric about his finances. It is intellectually lazy and devoid of sound logic.

but I do care when he condemns others with money and tries to have this "image" of being a good honest man, "son of a millworker" (lol, son of the manager of a mill)...when he is anything but thisperson he tries to present

On class warfare...

“there are two Americas. … One America that does the work, another America that reaps the reward.”

"I think we've got two public school systems in this country. We've got one for the most affluent communities and one for everybody else."

"[There's] one America that pays the taxes, another America that
gets the tax breaks."

Now, if you really want to know what John Edwards and his wife think of the 2nd America (the normal people, not the rich elite that the Edwards are), then take a look at what they say about their neighbors.

so where does he condemn people for having money?

sure he says that things are unfair for the poor. that doesn't mean that he's upset at people for having money. instead, he's condemning the way that the poor are being treated as opposed to the rich.

He plays class warfare against the rich (the group that he is a part of). I would say it is safe to assume that he is trying to paint them in a bad light in order to drum up more support from the lower classes by using, at the worst, outright lies, and at best, controversial statements, in order to do so.

I love when Republicans bring up class warfare. Its so laughable.

There was also a study im having trouble finding that showed how income level of parents was a better predictor of college graduation than scores in high school.

Anyone earning less than 6 figures a year in this country is fucked right now, but mentioning that fact gets you called a class warrior. shit is absurd

I dont have an issue with Edwards being rich.

I dont have an issue with him making lots of money through trial law or hedge funds.

But to live so extravagantly, with Howard Hughes style mansions and $400 haircuts... and then make the class disparaties of society your driving issue, and claim to be on the side of the "common folk"

I'll call it on the self-righteous republicans who cloak themselves in morality as god-fearing christians, then get embroiled in sex and/or drug scandals.

and I'm gonna call it on Edwards.

it's just fucking hypocritical.

im sure hes a really great person, and I admire a lot about him and his work, but i'll be damned if I'll vote for him.

John Edwards is a slimy piece of shit who used his own son's death in a drunk driving accident in one of his closing arguments in order to play on the sympathies of a mostly female jury. (Not to mention, he claims his law school over his alma mater due to the higher popularity of his law school in the state. He never mentions NC State unless he speaks HERE.....)

This one act alone is enough to prevent me from ever even considering this pitiful excuse for a human being to be our next president. If the Democratic party refuses to steer clear of Edwards and Clinton as their nominee (in either the vp or pres. capacity), then they will seal their fate with another election loss. (also provided that the idiot neo-cons/christian fundy's running the Republican party don't simultaneously nominate another evangelical moron).

Someone needs to dig up that speech that Edwards gave at half time of the football game a few years ago..... about a minute clip of that speech on youtube as he delivered a public address when he was inebriated into oblivion would do wonders for his chances.

I fucking loathe John Edwards and I have told him as much to his face. Only a mongoloid would choose to put our country's future in this mans hands.

Maybe he’s technically a part by still giving the poverty center money, or helping out one weekend a month, or something to that effect?

I think the argument that he’s not giving us enough attention, therefore we should hate him is a bad one though. No one else makes us a stop on each of their major campaigns (or launched campaigns, like his run for VP last go around, from our school). In general he cares about education, and he has done some specific work on that in Raleigh, and he’s going to care about North Carolina more than the other candidates. So even if he’s not giving us enough personal attention to make everyone happy, he’s still giving more attention to our school and our state than any other candidate will.

He isn't. He resigned his duties as director on Dec. 28, 2006. The last real linkage between the two is the new book, ""Ending Poverty in America: How to Restore the American Dream," that came out in April. I don't think it's a grand conspiracy or anything, I just think it's weird that it hasn't been updated.
