Yeah, I wonder what they will do to compete when other companies come out with the next gen consoles in 5 years?

Seems like a new console will emerge in 5 or 6 years and they'll continue to claim the PS3 has life for several years afterward. Much like the "10 year" life cycle of the PlayStation (one).

well, just like now... the PS3 is out but the PS2 is definitely very much alive.

Sony is actually very good about not dropping support for their older consoles right away.

I don't care how much of a hard on you have against Sony, you can't deny that fact.

^^ Handhelds always do better than consoles. 1up recently did an article about how retailers were demanding sony do a price cut on the PSP because the sales were lagging so much. And the psp is getting its ass kicked by the DS

"There's plenty of PS3 hate to be had in 2007, but even though most of the haters won't admit it, they do want one eventually. So it's just a matter of waiting for a price drop and catching up with the rest of the PlayStation Home players. You've been saving up money for when the time is right, but how far off is that? Recent predictions from Goldman Sachs analysts are possibly an October price cut of hopefully $100. Other speculation has been made about the disc format war. The Blu-ray disc association has declared that they will win the war in three years from now. Too bad people will still be downloading movies, fuck yo' couch. I'll gladly spend hundreds of dollars to get consoles as soon as they launch, but it will be 2010 and I'll still be buying used VHS movies for a dollar each. "

^ Sony cares a great deal.

Person A buys a console with the intent on selling it.

Person B buys the console with the intent on keeping it. Person B is likely to buy accessories and games with it their purchase.

Take the PS3 and the Wii. Wii had much greater software sales than the PS3, because people were buying 3-4 games with the wii. Whereas the PS3 folks were just buying it to sell.

attach rate is 3.5 units per PS3 now

there are 2x as many hits for wii on ebay as PS3

PSP is so much more versatile than the DS, they don't belong in the same category - it's not a DS killer...it operates opn a completely different level

This is a horrible argument.

Person A buys a console with the intent on selling it to Person C. Person C is likely to buy accessories and games after their purchase. It doesn't matter if someone buys the console from the store with intent to resell it.

That really is Sony's downfall, they're trying to do so much with their console and handhelds. They ask Customers what they would like to see in their products, but not what they're willing to pay for. Simplicity is the key.

you may think it's funny to say that, but it's the truth...maybe you like your pokemon diamond too much to see that

did i miss something? would it be possible for me to have a game with PS2 graphics, 4 full length movies, and 15 full albums, 150 nintendo/tg16/sega games on a DS at the same time? because that's what's in my PSP right now...i can simply pick it up and choose any of those without having to switch a single thing out

Do I want a game with PS2 Graphics on a handheld? Doesn't matter as long as I like the games. I had a blast playing The New Super Mario Bros or Advanced Wars Duel Strike.

4 full length movies? Eh, I'll pass, I'm not really in a position where I want to be spending 2hours staring at something like a PSP, on a long trip, I'll just take my portable dvd player

15 Albums? Again, MP3 player, cheap one with 2 gigs costs what? 50 bucks now a days, and i can take it with to work out. Do I wanna take a PSP to the gym?

I'll give you the Emulator bit, but those functions aren't officially sanctioned by Sony. If I wanted to I could buy the emulator/movie playing cartridges for the DS, which are out there

come on now, who actually uses their psp for all of this, LOL

yeah, you're right - there isn't a homebrew community for the PSP...it's all made up

but even better, i can carry 3 or 4 devices instead of just one? why the fuck didn't i think of that! man, i've been wasting my time exploiting the power of the PSP when I could have simple shelled out another 600 bucks and had enough crap to fill a backpack!

i'm sorry, but where did I say that I use my PSP for working out? of course you don't. i still have my old ass 1GB rio for that. maybe the PSP is better suited for people who travel more. when i went to india and south america for 2 out of the last 14 months, having the psp was great for all the time in the air (same as for all the other flying i do) and i didn't have to lug a shit ton of stuff everywhere. not to mention the fact the psp and a 8 GB mem stick take up less than half the space of just your portable dvd player

if you're asking me if i play this out in public around town, no...but in ~40k miles of flying i did last year, i used it a whole hell of a lot...movies, music, games...one system the size of a paperback took care of me for flights up to 11 hours long

i keep it in my briefcase and listen to music at work on it - instead of buying an ipod nano, i picked up a 8GB card for 50 bucks

great, and for a bigger screen, you also get to have a dvd wallet to lug around, its charger, an ipod, its charger, a portable game system (if you want one) and its charger...and then you get to lug all of that around for 4 weeks in india or argentina or brazil on flights, bus rides, etc...no thanks...i'll lose some screen size for ultra portability

oh and if you want to check and send e-mail, you get to bring your laptop as well...SWEET!

ok i see now. for traveling this much sure using all of the psp's power is justified. but for us that are more or less grounded, i can;t see just sitting in public playing a handheld by mature people on a regular basis. i tried handheld gaming in the public, and i felt cool for 10 mins. then i slowly started feeling stupid, childish, creepy, eetc.. true story.

i totally agree with you on that...i was in grad school when i got mine (before my trip to india), played it in the commons area once between classes when i had an hour to kill, and retired it to the nerdery after that. i guess if i was a professional involved in the gaming industry, i could feel ok about it, but you're right - it was kind of creepy

However, The Slug was most impressed by the game's flight controls. When you want the serpent you've mounted to bank right, you tilt the Sixaxis controller right. Want him to do a reverse 180-degree turn? Flick that motion controller backwards. No analog controls here. Fun!

Now for the bad news: The dragons won't be customizable beyond some unlockable moves"

Lair is going to be a pretty interesting game. I think if they pull the controls off right it could be a massive success. If not it will probably be absolutely terrible. I don't see this being just an average game, either really great or not worth buying at all.

On a technical level, Codemasters is attempting to push the systems to their limits. Audio is created on-the-fly and is fully dynamic. There are no pre-recorded versions of Doppler or reverb effects here, and the developer has managed to record individual samples for every section of an engine's sound palette."

I'd rather they delay a game and get it right than move to a model where they release a buggy game with the intent of patching it up via the online capabilities of a system... not to say they shouldn't make patches available like they are for PCs, just that they shouldn't release something that won't work well without them.

^^^ I know what that feeling is like. After I get through school next week I hope to have a lot of freetime so I can finally buy and play through Oblivion.

^^ Yeah, I would say right now both Motorstorm and Resistance are worth owning if you don't have either. They definitely stand out as the best all around PS3 games with good single player and online modes. Personally, I really enjoyed the co-op mode in Resistance. Also if you like fighting games VF5 is pretty solid. Check out the reviews below and see if anything interests you:

Firmware 1.6 Now Available
Quote :
"The PLAYSTATION®3 System Software version 1.60 update includes the following:

Featured Content

* Folding@home connectivity, background downloading of content from the PLAYSTATION®Store, support for Bluetooth® keyboards and mice, and an optional full QWERTY on-screen keyboard for text entry.

Folding@home

* The Folding@home project allows PS3 owners to connect to Stanford University’s Folding@home program, a distributed computing project aimed at understanding protein folding, misfolding, and related diseases, such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and many cancers. Using the power of the Cell Broadband Engine™, PS3 system can perform computer simulations for the Folding@home program ten times faster than your average home PC. Once PS3 system is updated to version 1.60, users can easily sign up to join the Folding@home program by clicking on the appropriate logo on the XMB™ (XrossMediaBar) under the Network icon. Then, when the PS3 system is left on and reaches idle mode, it will automatically begin a simulation and, once completed, send information back to a central computer. Additional details about Folding@home are available at http://www.scei.co.jp/folding/en/.

Enhanced Downloading

* Firmware Version 1.60 also delivers a more convenient process for downloading content to the PS3 from the PLAYSTATION Store. Up to 6 pieces of content from the PlayStation store can be queued up for download while the user enjoys other functions of the PS3 system, including playing games, browsing the web, using media functions including photo browsing, video and music playback. Progress of downloads can be easily tracked under a new Download Management menu under the XMB’s Network icon.

Remote Play by way of the access point

* This feature, enabling you to access photos, videos, andmusic on your PS3 system's hard drive from a nearby PSP® (PlayStation®Portable), will be available for the 20GB configuration, when utilizing an external Wi-Fi router or local wireless access point.

Bluetooth keyboard and mouse support / Full size keyboard

* Support for keyboards and mice enabled with Bluetooth wireless technology has been added. Text entry is further expanded with the option to use a full QWERTY on-screen keyboard, in addition to the existing single tap keyboard. PS3’s built-in Web browser is also enhanced with the ability to zoom in to the optimal viewing size for the selected area of a Web page at the press of a button, as well as an optional tool for reducing flicker when the PS3 system is using interlaced video out (480i or 1080i).

Disc Auto-Start

* This new option under System Settings allows you to choose whether or not a disc should start automatically upon inserting the disc or turning on your PS3 system.

Blu-ray Disc Rewriteable (BD-RE) Support

* PS3 system can now playback BD-RE discs (version 3.0)."

I am really happy about the background downloading and also the ability to turn off disc auto-start which was somewhat annoying.

Fine, but I want to make it clear that it's not that I don't know anything about music, it's that I and a lot of other people on TWW don't give a shit about how indie you are in your tastes. It's really retarded how many of those fucking threads get made where all people do is drop names of small bands.

Here is my current album selection:

Arctic Monkeys - Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not
Coldplay - A Rush of Blood to the Head

I thought this was a PS3 thread...

I'm going to update my shit tonight and start queuing up some downloads. Still can't wait for MKII and Calling All Cars, but I've got so many games going on right now that I thin I will survive.

I just beat God of War 1 last night and it was a pretty awesome ending. I tried the "Challenge of the Gods" though and got to the last challenge and have never been more infuriated with a video game experience in my entire life. I'll probably pick up God of War 2 later on, it looks awesome.

I'm still debating on whether to pick up Oblivion or not, can't decide. Its 50 bucks at Circuit City this week.

yeah, i and a few others helped sidetrack it - my bad

i never did play GoW 1, but always heard it was awesome. I may just go out and pick it up, but Motorstorm has been filling my playing time.

I'm sure oblivion will be worth it, but I already had it on the PC. Loved it there and would expect it to be just as good on the PS3

Anyone heard when we're going to get an adapter to use the Guitar Hero controller on the PS3? I'm tired of keeping the PS2 hooked up

^^ Do you know if that $50 deal is only online or what? I am waiting on IGN to review Oblivion to make sure they did a good port to the PS3 before buying, but if the deal is ending this week then I might have to go ahead and buy it.

^ I have not personally messed with playing music on the PS3 but I know for sure you can't play music during games (yet ... supposedly coming later via firmware update).
