12/17/2007 6:38:05 PM
well, another kick square in the nuts unfortunately. the infection is back with a vengeance again, and there are still multiple pockets and hairline fractures in the bone. it still flexes very freely at the fracture/graft area. they're going to give things a week or two to recover from the fixator pins and the poking around today, then they will be doing a very aggressive debridement. the surgeon also has plans to start consulting with people at duke, chapel hill and other nationally reputable ortho specialists for any fresh ideas.for now, i'm in a partial hard cast/splint thing and back to non weight bearing.[Edited on December 17, 2007 at 11:35 PM. 12/17/2007 11:34:46 PM
Holy fucking shit. This completely blows dingaling. What can be done about the infection? You're STILL on antibiotics, ain't you?
12/17/2007 11:58:07 PM
not a clue man, i think the doctors are about out of ideas too. yeah, i'm on three different oral ones. they're going to try a couple of other things out on the cultures and see if it responds, but the three i'm already on are supposedly the "kill all" ones.
12/18/2007 12:07:46 AM
fuck
12/18/2007 12:12:43 AM
damn man that sucks so bad...i cant imagine it not just like "setting" and not getting infected anymore
12/18/2007 12:47:21 AM
Man, I never thought I'd say this, 'specially since I'm pretty agnostic. But I'm gonna pray for your gimpy ass. Seriously. If you lose yer leg, I got no doubts that you will power through and be damn fine. A prosthesis would probably give you pretty good functionality, even with that toter's clutch. But you've had to suffer through all this shit. It sure would be nice if your leg stays with you, and you can gain back reasonable use of it.If there's God, maybe he (or she) will give you that. I already think you've been pretty blessed with the ability to deal with all of this.Thinkin' about ye, son. Keep your head up. I'm not sure I could have handled this as well as you have. Whatever the outcome, remember that I think it's not all for nothing.
12/18/2007 1:25:02 AM
dammit, dude.keep fighting.
12/18/2007 1:31:22 AM
^^thanks man, kind words for sure. i don't want to start a discussion on religion in here because i'm far from an example of a good Christian and this is supposed to be at least a somewhat garage related thread, but i will say that i'm a firm believer that the power of prayer from family/friends is a lot of what's brought me to this point and helped me through. as tough as it's been and even with all the setbacks, i'm very blessed for it to not be any worse. i know i've made mention to it before, but i personally attribute that to a higher power.okay... enough of that. back to bike talk, gimp jokes, and graphic pics. [Edited on December 18, 2007 at 1:35 AM. Reason : .]
12/18/2007 1:35:07 AM
It is impressive how positive you are, keep fighting it. It is because of your accident I've called off buying a bike for the foreseeable future. I probably won't consider one while living in an urban area.
12/18/2007 1:40:40 AM
yeah really....i mean i probably think life sucks and i've never had a broken bone or gotten stiches...i'm amazed and inspired how you keep such a positive attitude
12/18/2007 2:43:31 AM
yeah, well i won't lie and say i haven't had my moments... i don't post about them on tww though.
12/18/2007 2:56:29 AM

12/18/2007 3:35:56 AM

12/18/2007 7:14:58 AM
i'm not a very religious person either, but you've got my prayers... good luck man

12/18/2007 12:19:04 PM
yeah, i had a rod but they had to take it because they thought it was contributing to the infection. just a few screws in there now, and one in my other leg.
12/18/2007 12:45:01 PM

12/18/2007 4:14:37 PM
go back in tomorrow to have an aggressive debridement procedure done and they'll check the status of the bone graft (dead, infected, live, etc.) and determine if another one needs to be taken from my other hip or not.then, wednesday i will have a skin flap completed by a plastic surgeon. taking muscle/skin tissue from the calf muscle and attaching it to the front directly on top of the tibia. the blood supply from where it's taken will remain in place. supposedly this will make it look a little odd (as if it doesn't already), like a piece of meat sitting on top of your leg, lol.the purpose of this is to replace the tissue that's already been removed in past procedures as well as the large amount that will be cut out tomorrow. in addition to this, the new tissue will provide increased bloodflow to the tibia and surrounding areas. this should help with the infection for several reasons.these will be surgery numbers 13 and 14.

weird, looks like a t-dubber might be getting in on this round. ?topic=511132&page=1#11161497

i would say something about the surgery but i can't :\ stupid HIPPAif bigblueram tells me i can however, then i will
1/21/2008 4:22:55 PM
he'll get on here and update everyone when he's ready, he wouldn't leave his fans waiting
1/21/2008 4:40:49 PM
^^nah man, feel free to post whatever you want.the surgery was somewhat mixed results. the good news is that the remaining infected area wasn't as widespread as they expected it to be. however, they took enough that it will still require the skin flap to be done wednesday. the bad news is that in addition to the tissue, a portion of the bone graft was dead and roughly a 2" section had to be removed. it was replaced with an antibiotic cement as a temporary filler, which was also used before the graft was done. as a result, an additional bone graft procedure will be required at some point (taken from my other hip). i have another external fixator (different than the last one) on also to keep everything stable and lined up since the piece of bone had to be removed.tomorrow there should be some results from the cultures and also a little more info on what's going to happen after the procedure on wednesday.[Edited on January 21, 2008 at 10:01 PM. 1/21/2008 10:31:26 PM
yeah, the surgery went very well - i was there for the whole thing, and took him to recovery.i don't really have anything to add, ivan pretty much covered it all. i'll see if i can get in on his skin graft too. ]

1/23/2008 10:45:51 PM
the one yesterday was a pretty miserable procedure. lots of pain. looks like i'll be in here until monday. then going home with another PICC line in for iv antibiotics. then i'll come back for another bone graft in a few weeks, which will likely use cadaver bone and synthetic materials this time.i'll post up some pics of the new stuff tomorrow, they're supposed to be changing the bandages some time.
