anybody know what the deal with charley's is? israel (the manager?/owner?) said that they were going to close at the end of last week due to low sales, but then last friday he said that they weren't going to close immediately.

The owners of those buildings really need to get with this whole "economy is in the shitter" thing and lower their rents. That strip has always had high rents, it's ridiculous.
2/27/2009 5:18:52 PM
^ They should also tear down the Electric Company Mall while they're at it. So much wasted space in that building.Tear it down, then build mixed use buildings. Businesses at street level and apartments above.

Schoolkids and Kinko's used to be where Baskin Robbins and Jimmy John's are now

There's a Baskin Robbins and Jimmy John's on Hillsborough now? [Edited on March 17, 2009 at 9:47 PM. Reason : oh wait, is it the BR and DD combo? I remember the Dunkin Donuts opening right before I graduated.]

http://www.wral.com/news/news_briefs/story/4763413/Raleigh to spend $9M on Hillsborough Street traffic circlesRaleigh, N.C. — The City Council on Tuesday approved spending $9 million to install roundabouts on Hillsborough Street between Oberlin Road and Gardner Street.North Carolina State University also contributed money to the project. The N.C. State campus runs along Hillsborough Street for the entire stretch.Local voters approved the roundabouts four years ago as part of a $60 million bond referendum for road improvements. The City Council has debated the details of the project ever since. The traffic circles are seen as a way to make Hillsborough Street more pedestrian-friendly and to revitalize the area for businesses.Councilman Philip Isley opposed the effort Tuesday, saying there are better uses for the money in the current economic environment."In my estimation, this is a low-hanging fruit for us to grab and determine a way to forestall any water increase or plug holes in our budget," Isley said. "I want to make a substitute motion to furlough this project for 18 months."The motion was defeated.

GAH. I'm all for this revitalization--really, I am--but I forgot we're losing the Hillsborough Square lot to the roundabout/Oberlin reroute. There go another 50+ C permit spaces, when it's already damn hard to find a space in the Reynolds lot unless you get there really early since they killed a lot of C spaces behind the gym and student health. Guess it's time to go trade in for a DC. On the bright side, the fact that they're finally, finally starting this is some very good news.

they should have put in slanted parking spaces instead.

Lane closures are starting to go into effect as of today btw.

http://www.hillsboroughstreet.org/project_files/2009-03-11_StreetscapeMapUpdate_18x89.pdfThey have completely cut off Oberlin access to Players Retreat and Darryl's (RH&B) from Cameron village and Campus. The only way to directly access those places are coming from downtown on HB st.
5/12/2009 5:44:12 PM
No they haven'tJust go around the traffic circle. In terms of distance, it'll be longer coming from CV, but about the same from campus.
5/12/2009 5:49:47 PM
You can still access Players Retreat, RHB, etc from Cameron Village. You have two options coming from CV.1. The simplest is to just go around the Oberlin circle and park.2. Go around the Oberlin circle, around the Pullen circle, and then park in the lot behind PR/RHB.If you're coming from the west, you can also just go around the Pullen circle, u-turn in front of RHB, down Oberlin, and park. There's a ton of options. You could also park at Cameron Village and get your lazy ass walking south and not worry about parking.Look I even annotated a picture for you:[Edited on May 12, 2009 at 7:32 PM. Reason : -]

After completion, we'll need a person with a signboard sitting on one of the entrance islands that reads, "_ _ days since last accident."I would expect that we'd only need 1 digit, but you never know, there could be a dry spell after people learn how to use it.
5/12/2009 8:08:29 PM
that traffic circle on campus was one of the best things they've ever donealsoBRING ON THE DIGGING AND THE COMPLAINERS ABOUT THE CONSTRUCTIONWE'RE WAY PAST DUE TO DO THIS
5/12/2009 9:01:21 PM
^^statistically traffic circles have much lower accident rates than traditional intersections; i'd have to strongly disagree[Edited on May 12, 2009 at 9:03 PM. Reason : ^]
5/12/2009 9:02:47 PM
that u-turn you did is illegal. and of course you can get to nearby parking lots, but you can't roll up to the front of it from the street in your car without going outside of that diagram.
5/12/2009 9:18:03 PM
hillsborough should be pretty nice after it's all said and doneof course this won't deter the bumsalso, keep in mind that most of the green/landscaped areas you see on the plans will probably turn from grass into large deposits of mulch and dirt, just like almost everywhere else on this fucking campus

5/13/2009 12:38:09 PM
This is such a bad idea. I'm all for roundabouts, but I used one of the double ones when I first got my license... this isn't going to be pretty.
5/13/2009 12:41:51 PM
5/13/2009 1:21:41 PM
if you were coming from pullen going to "rhb parking lot" why would you not just go straight through both of the circles instead of making that weird u-turn?
5/13/2009 2:26:59 PM
the impression i got was that he was merely addressing the many possibilities which exist for getting to that location and not necessarily indicating that each one was as practical as the other. But on a serious note, how will this affect the krispy kreme challenge
5/13/2009 2:31:25 PM
The 2-lane roundabout might be a little confusing at first, and a handful of morons will screw it up, but seriously, it's not that hard. Hopefully they'll put up some decent signs in addition to useful paint on the roadway.

^^right... i'm all for the project, but it just caught my eye... i wonder how business will be affected now that it isn't on a main route.
5/13/2009 4:44:26 PM
none.
5/13/2009 4:49:25 PM
Probably won't affect it at all, I don't think PR had many window shoppers. Like ^^^ said, there's a big parking lot right behind it and it should be even easier to get to after the construction.
5/13/2009 4:50:44 PM
people driving buy are not their target, those businesses want pedestrians
