Just traded my 1911 for the S&W 686 above. Never cared for the 1911 that much (sacrilege I know) and always wanted a nice .357. Might get another 1911 one day, if I do it will be a nicer one than the springfield loaded I had.
6/26/2011 4:15:48 PM
^As I've put more and more trigger time on my pistols, I find the 1911 to be a less than desirable platform for my needs. In terms of economy a well-tuned 1911 comes up short. In terms of performance the same. Dare I say it, I find the 1911 to be becoming obsolete.
6/26/2011 6:32:56 PM
If I had to choose between my 1911 and my SW629, the 629 would be the keeper. The 1911 is never going to leave the collection though due to the history behind the gun. It's the same reason I want to add an M1A1 to the collection at some point, right beside the M1 Garand and M1 Carbine that are family heirlooms.

So with this new HB 650, we can finally get some sweet sweet NFA stuff in NC?
6/26/2011 8:11:43 PM
You always could, you were just in a legally ambiguous zone if you managed to do it on a trust (since most sheriffs won't sign). This just codifies your right to own them as legally provided by federal law. You still have to have a permit for MG's, but you can get anything else you want on a trust without LEO involvement.

Ordered the XD yesterday. Price locally at Eagle 1 was on point with Buds. After taxes and fees it came out to $498. https://www.davidsonsinc.com/consumers/subsites/inven_product.asp?dealer_id=324581&item=XD9101HC&instock=all&manufact_combo=Springfield+Armory&mod_ser_combo=XD&category_combo=1&model=XD&g_type=None&act_type=&finish_type=None&calib_combo=9MM&sight_class_combo=None&price_range=%24300+to+%24500&left_handed=&youth=&Offset_rec=0&num_rec=100&item_num=Cant wait to pick it up Tuesday! One question though. The address on my license is wrong, I told the lady at the sherriffs office and she said I will need the correct address on there to pick up the permit. I put the request for a duplicate today and it says it should be here in 10 business days. The lady at the serriffs office said something about printing off the receipt that I did it and it would be ok, but I dont see the new address on the receipt? Any of you gone through this or will I have to wait until the new license comes in?
6/27/2011 9:01:27 AM
pretend I know nothing about the processes of NFA stuff... other than that you currently have to get the permission of the county sheriff to purchase it, and it requires special tax stamps and stuff.what is this "trust" business yall are speaking about? I wouldn't mind having some silencers for my .22 plinker or being able to get some short barrel stuff. Son of Guns built something I've always wanted to have:in 20ga

Federal law provides that legal entities such as corporations and trusts may purchase and own NFA devices. As part of that provision, a legal entity has no requirement to submit fingerprints or a CLEO signoff, it simply needs ATF approval, which is relatively easy to get. You, as a trustee of that entity (your own, personal living trust), can purchase items for the trust, and additionally, anyone else that is a trustee can have full access to them. It's basically a nice federal loophole that circumvents the dickwad LEO's who choose not to sign. The only notable exception is getting full-auto, where state law still requires a MG permit issued by the CLEO of your county. Suppressors, SBR's, SBS', and AOW's can all be purchased by a legal trust without playing the mother-may-I game with your sheriff.Until this new bill, the language of NC law did not explicitly permit this sort of arrangement, but now it does.

^ Do you have a link for info on setting up the trust?

got the opportunity to meet LTC Dave Grossman today, and hear his "bulletproof mind" seminarhe made some very good points and also brought up several events that nobody wanted to think about but everybody needed to hear about (the school in Beslan, Russia as well as September 11, NIU, VT, Jonesboro, Columbine, etc); i really enjoyed it. still going through notes that I took, and writing more.this particular seminar was in Florence, SC, and open to the public. this is pretty rare, normally his talks are open only to LEOs/active duty military and their immediate family.i can't say I agree with everything he says.. not everybody loses fine motor control as their heart rate approaches 180-200bpm (for example)what do you guys think of his teachings, etc?]
6/29/2011 9:45:57 PM
After reading ^ I searched around and found this: http://www.buckeyefirearms.org/node/5437Very interesting read summarizing one of his seminars
6/30/2011 9:12:37 AM
^^I have lost fine motor control in a gunfight, as well as spatial orientation and common sense. However having been exposed at this point to stress-inoculation training, and seeing graphs of those with similar exposure placed in high stress situations, I think you can train your body to handle adrenal influx a lot better. If you have an open or outdoor range try this: Sprint 200-400m, then engage with your weapon at your distance of choice. Shoot to slidelock reload, shoot from different positions, presentations etc. Even if you look at people shooting competition for the first time, the new stimulus of the buzzer makes people lose their minds. Try to work in some stress shoots into your routine and you'll have a better handle if it ever comes time to do actual work.
6/30/2011 1:29:32 PM
recoil pad recommendations? slip-on preferably?
6/30/2011 3:03:39 PM
the way grossman puts it, you lose fine motor control as your heart rate increases, regardless of the presence or absence of stress, flying bullets, etc (the worst is what he calls "condition black")i'm not disputing the loss of fine motor skills in an extremely stressful situation like a gunfight, but with something like that there are plenty of other factors that contribute besides heart rate.He did discuss stress inoculation and awareness of the midbrain response to stress (and the loss of rational thought), as well as breathing exercises to control stress. There's a guy I've done some shooting with that has access to an abandoned strip mall, and we're going to do some force on force stuff with airsoft (or maybe even simunition fx) to get some experience with live action training. I'm really looking forward to it]
6/30/2011 6:02:36 PM
What else would cause the loss of fine motor skills? If there is a small amount of stress, you heart rate will go up; it might not shoot through the roof but it will increase. As your heart rate increases, the heart floods the organs with blood (a survival mechanism) and you loose dexterity in other parts of your body. A deadly force encounter is the ultimate stressor; stress inoculation is key. Even you carry a gun, you need to go beyond shooting at the range if you plan on recognizing and winning a deadly force encounter.[Edited on June 30, 2011 at 7:44 PM. Reason : ...]
6/30/2011 7:43:21 PM
a massive surge in adrenaline will cause loss of motor function, and I don't know if there really is a way to prevent this or if you'd really want to prevent this. That massive shot of adrenaline will prevent you from bleeding out as fast if you get wounded, since it's a vasoconstrictor. It's bad enough dealing with fine motor function with an elevated heart rate, as evidenced by how difficult biathlon events are. Add in someone shooting back at you, and the combination of heart rate and adrenaline could cause you to do some really stupid things.
6/30/2011 8:24:46 PM
ok i'm not saying you can perform brain surgery while you're "condition black"... we're all saying the same thing hereon a lighter note:

Sims are as fine a training platform out there; however watch that you don't become "gun-shy" (pardon the pun) in your engagements. You'll see, after a few times each participant is hit, that each encounter will lose some of its aggression. As a caveat I fight from a school of thought that teaches overwhelming violence to carry the situation; thus aggression is key. As a civilian in a defensive posture it may not be entirely practical to conduct business in a manner that will be conducive to sims training. We train for hard-target hits, whereas the majority of defensive encounters are reactionary. Good idea though, from what weapon system will you run sims?
6/30/2011 9:27:10 PM
I feel like effective training combines hard targets and range time with sim training/force on force. I do want to work with these guys on stress inoculation drills.. if nothing else, just sprinting or jumping jacks for couple minutes, then reassemble your firearm and get A zone hits on 5 targets no idea about the sims. at this point its still just an idea but I think he's gaining a lot of interest, especially with the possibility of using the strip mallwhats your background? LE or military, or another armed private citizen
6/30/2011 10:22:46 PM
I'm military. In my post, by hard target I meant fortified structures where the folks inside are aware of your eminent arrival. Anyway for sims you have a few options. Simunition FX sells conversion kits for most pistols and AR type rifles which require a whole new upper receiver. Still $$UTM sells a drop in bolt for the AR platform; requires different sim ammo and packs a fucking wallop. I'd say airsoft would be your best bet though I don't have much experience with those, just looking from a cost standpoint.

there are talks of a new type of match/competition a buddy is talking about putting together. it will be 2 mins of grappling/sparring immediately before you shoot the course. it is still in it's infancy but if anyone is interested i'll keep you informed.

anyone have a sierra reloading manual and willing to give me the data for a 55 gr matchking in 22-250? do they list one powder as the most accurate in their tests?i could ask on a reloading forum, but i don't feel like getting them all riled up about me reloading w/o an overpriced copy of the data sitting right in front of me.

About how much would a gunsmith charge to shorten the barrel on a shotgun? Thinking about taking 10" off and swapping stocks to make one into a dedicated home defense gun.
7/3/2011 3:58:24 PM
Do it yourself
7/3/2011 4:17:07 PM
^^ can you just buy a shorter barrel for the shotgun?
7/3/2011 6:54:44 PM
I've got quotes for shortening a shotgun barrel. Without threading, chokes, or refinishing I've heard as low as $50. With a basic set of chokes I've heard as low as $75.I cut mine down and it cost $1.5 for a hacksaw blade, $4 for a carpenter's square, and $5 for a mill file.Later I had it threaded for thin walled tubes plus two tubes for $50.[Edited on July 4, 2011 at 8:28 AM. Since people in this thread prefer to talk guns rather than shooting: I've been on a revolver kick lately. Like old revolvers. I bought a Heritage .22 SAA last month, and took the plunge and bought a Uberti Dragoon knockoff this month. The Dragoon is HUGE. It is a 4lb monster and I see now why it was considered a saddle pistol. I'm planning on getting a conversion cylinder for it as I have little desire to shoot blackpowder. I bought it mostly as a wall-hanger with an occasional trip the the range. The conversion will allow me to put .45 LC cowboy loads through it. I'm impressed by the quality of the Uberti brand, and it was affordable as well. Pictured with the Heritage:

I finally stepped up and bought a "nice" gun. It took a few mags to get the grip right, Im just not used to shooting double stack pistols. I still shoot better with the Sigs though. HK P7M13
7/6/2011 9:35:15 PM
Nice! I've been wanting to try one of those.
7/6/2011 9:44:04 PM
Dont, they are too expensive for a 20yo gun. I shot one about 4 years ago and have wanted one ever since. Lots of PSP's for floating around right now for about 1/3 of the $.[Edited on July 6, 2011 at 10:42 PM. Reason : .]

^What sort of grip do you shoot with? I found that adjusting my whole grip in order to fire the gun lead to inconsistency and was annoying
7/7/2011 7:02:40 AM
Not really sure what you would call my grip, Weaver I guess would be the closest. I think it had more to do with the thicker frame and plastic grips. Most of the shooting I have done over the past few years has been with my Sig P239 wearing a pair of Hogues that are much thinner. I dont plan on using the P7M13 as a carry gun so it is not really not an issue.

^Purchase permit? I dropped my application off on a Friday and got the permits in the mail on Tuesday--I bought my first gun, Beretta 92FS (personal choice, I know there's probably better choices, blah blah).So...What do I do with it? Anyone have links to a "welcome gun owner" read? Mostly I'm curious about all the grease that's on it (brand new)
7/8/2011 10:43:00 PM
^^ even if its just for plinking i think you'd get tired of clearing malfunctions and messing around with the gun instead of just shooting itI'd save for something a little more $$. most of the time you get what you pay for (esp with hi point)
7/8/2011 11:30:10 PM
Quagmire02: I believe that if you never pick up your permits they go void after 6 weeks. After that you have to reapply. once you have been approved and picked up the permits, they expire after 5 years if you haven't used them. Also, I wouldn't ever buy a high point......just not a quality gun. bad material, ugly, bad reputation, ugly.....did I mention ugly?Peter: clean all of that goop out of there, it's just packing grease. then you need to lube it up with gun oil. It doesn't really matter what kind you use, but some people have preferences. there are plenty of youtube videos out there to walk you through it i'm sure. [Edited on July 8, 2011 at 11:48 PM.
