There are only two things that could make this better, 1) the basketball program gets implicated in this and get a treatment that resembles what we got in 1990, and 2) if a sink hole opened up and swallowed the entire UNC campus into the earth.

If the bball team gets hurt from this as well, then the tears of every tarhole might be enough to just drown all of Cheater Hill.

Watching sc tonight I looked up when they started talking about the UNC stuff. It was about 20 seconds long. It ended with "non of the players played a down." The very next clip was peppers' INT from the weekend.

I lol'd

Brakk finally resurfaced, confirmed what 3001 said on the previous page about booster $, and added that Butch requested this pool of cash the day he got to Chapel Hill. He also added that the tutor is talking (per his sources).

Also an interesting article on IC about Hughes (5* Linebacker) that still has UNC as #1 and was fully convinced by BD that UNC was the place for him, and that all of this stuff was getting taken care of.

^ good post from brakk - we'll see.

Quote :
"1.UNC is in full crisis mode right now. The NCAA is back on campus reinterviewing all the UNC coaches. There is another rat on the staff that has been trying to do his best John Blake inpression and the NCAA wants to ferret him out
2. The money that has changed hands will exceed USC money and the NCAA knows where all of it has come from.
3. BMFD is a dead man walking. He will serve out his pennance for the rest of the year and be sent on his way soon after the Duke game.
4. Alot of the money to these recruits and players has come from a special fund that BMFD requested from certain boosters when he was hired. Those same boosters are very nervous about the information that will soon be public.
5. I was told that all the seniors who came back were receiving money so Sturdivant and Carter who were cleared may ultimately be in trouble at a date to be determined later.
6. The tutor may be talking and if she does game over.
7. UNC football will not be relevant far a long , long while. UNC fans think 2018"

I doubt Butch's hands are anywhere close to clean, but I also have a hard time believing that something like this would get by Baddour and Thorp, who I think are pretty good guys, university affiliations aside.

That's a giant run-on sentence but basically a Butch-sponsored slush fund can't be 4 realz

Anyway, wasn't Brakk the one who said be prepared for something biblical a while back and it didn't happen? He predicted a day and it came and went with no news. It was as disappointing as being a Jehovah's Witness and the rapture never coming.

^he predicted that Yahoo article essentially, just a week early. To him, that was biblical and he thought it would lead to people getting fired. His source told him it was coming out one night, and it never came out. Came out a week later, and was pretty close to what he was saying. Not sure he deserves 100% credit, but it wasnt a total whif.

I think with the fluidity involved in this thing, you can cut a guy some slack for being off by a day or a few. Who knows what the Yahoo! guy found out that took a few more days to chase out.

Also btw, UNC investigation made page 1A, 1B, and 1C of today's N&O. The only section they didn't front was the comics.

Butch didn't go to the bank with Baddour and set up an account to move money. He simply let it be known than paying recruits was a must and informed a well connected booster and let him do the rest. Be very interested tos ee if the tutor has any information on this. Her silence is keeping Butch employed as far as I can tell.

Yeah, put me on the "I call bullshit" list when it comes to Butchy directly requesting or implying the need to pay recruits. Don't get me wrong, I'd love nothing more than for those rumors to prove true, but c'mon man... he can't be that stupid and/or arrogant.

i learned long ago to not assume that "stupidity", "rationality" or "arrogance" would ever stop someone from doing something wrong, or the fact that the observer would never "morally" do what those observed did.

when it comes to money, power, prestige whatever, some people will literally do anything.

couple that with many people's belief that the only way to succeed both instantly and in the long term in major college athletics is to "reward" certain elements. there are people who actually want to do this and getting caught/staying clean is all part of the game as well.

This. It's not really a belief, it's pretty much fact.

The only clean programs are those who don't get caught in major college sports.

You have trouble believing butch had a slush fund? Really?

What else sounds fishy to you... Baseball players using steroids in the 90s? OJ killing nicole simpson? Adrian mcpherson shaving points against ncsu in 2002?

I don't think it's 100% not credible. I mean, John Blake did it. It's not unheard of. And if there were boosters that wanted to get into stuff like that, it's not really so much of a 'request' as it is an 'accept'.

My bad, I should've clarified a bit. I wouldn't doubt that Butch supported, turned a blind eye, or even initiated. What I meant to say is that I would think he would be smart enough to cover his tracks or maintain plausible deniability. Brakk made it sound like he showed up after getting hired and blatently said, "OK boosters, I'm going to need __ thousand dollars in this account so I can pay/bribe recruits, k thx."

DB said in the press conference that, as Butch was informing the three that they had been dismissed from the team, that they needed to look at this as the first day of the rest of their lives. He said it may sound trite but that it meant a lot to these guys. That's why I love Butch Davis. Even in the middle of a horrible situation, where these three guys let us all down and potentially cost him his job, he's still teaching them about life and how to handle adversity. Butch Davis is MY coach!!"

reading some blogs

http://hedgestohardwood.blogspot.com/2010/10/t4-uncheater-edition.html

Quote :
"The ongoing scandal at UNC is a bit more serious than people are making out. The primary three players that are getting the attention received approximately $30,000-plus in compensation from agents. This was in the form of trips, bling, and I would venture a guess cash. Former coaches and current NFL players are involved in the shenanigans. It's going to be really, really dirty when the hammer comes down on UNC and I'll tell you why.

Let's go back to UNC's recruiting class of 2007, when the newly hired Butch Davis inked super-recruits DT Marvin Austen (5-star), WR Dwight Jones (5-star), ATH Greg Little (4-star), and WR Rashad Mason (4-star). While it's really not unbelievable that Davis pulled in the in-state guys in Little and Jones, he went and plucked the #1 DT in the nation from the grips of USC, Miami, and Florida State. Davis' track record at Miami, where he somehow convinced the likes of Ray Lewis, Duane Starks, Edgerrin James, Clinton Portis, Frank Gore, Bubba Franks, Dan Morgan, Santana Moss, Reggie Wayne, Bryant McKinnie, Jeremy Shockey, Phillip Buchanon, Ed Reed, Andre Johnson, Willis McGahee, Sean Taylor, Kellen Winslow II, Jonathan Vilma, Vince Wilfork, Antrel Rolle, and Kelly Jennings to come and play for the U, was at the least suspect. When this class popped up on the radar, I can't say I wasn't suspicious that things weren't on the up and up."

I'm not so sure that it's all that far-fetched. UNC had a plan from the beginning to become a perennial top-10 power and I'm sure they, like everyone, knew that there's no such thing as a big-time program that didn't cheat to get the ball rolling. Butch probably laid out the "five year plan" of payola to entice top recruits and jump start things, after which (if things had gone to plan) they probably would be winning championships and top recruits would flock to the program without having to pay them. Get through the next four or five years and you're golden -- the NCAA statute of limitations will have expired by then.

From the "I Shit You Not" files:

Heather Dinich had this to say:

Quote :
"Alan (San Diego)

Forde said in one of his chats that North Carolina, nationally has been the biggest disapointment. I disagree. They lost so much, and are still 3-2, and lost to LSU by 6 and were driving to win the game. Do you agree or disagree about UNC?

Heather Dinich (1:35 PM) It depends on how you look at it. For my midseason report I initially had them as the biggest disappointment and then changed it to biggest surprise for the reasons you mention. But good lord, if this had never happened, they would have won the ACC and could have contended for a NC. So yeah, that's a HUGE disappointment."

Without the suspensions they might be the #1 team in the ACC right now but they'd fall back into their old patterns of losing to State, UVA, VT, GT, etc.

as much as defense wins championships, it also takes an offense.

did u see the Rutgers game? What about Clempson and TJ Yates yearly mid season slide into mediocriity and happy feet? Greg Little would have saved this team? The WR's they have now are better than him. They were only close at LSU due to the "us against the world" factor, "nothing to lose" etc.

But...they probably cheated to get those players in the first place.

So it's a moot point.

"Gary used his contacts in the coaching community to help him get players. This has recently come into public view, as the NCAA and the state of North Carolina are investigating the Tar Heels football program and whether John Blake, a Carolina assistant coach since 2007, steered players to Gary and received money from him. It's no secret in the agent business that some college coaches steer players to certain agents. I laughed when I heard Gary deny in the media that John ever worked with Pro Tect.

When I was with Gary, John worked hand in hand with us, and Gary called him his "partner." John was the defensive line coach of the Dallas Cowboys when they won Super Bowls XXVIII and XXX, and the head coach at Oklahoma from '96 through '98. He was one of the best recruiters I'd ever seen. He was just electric, and I leveraged him to get clients whenever I could. In '02 two of the biggest clients we got were due, in large part, to John. He went with Gary and me to meet with Fresno State defensive lineman Alan Harper, and Gary and I had John work out defensive end Kenyon Coleman from UCLA before his senior year. That was an NCAA violation, but it wasn't like paying a kid. It was helping Kenyon become a better player.
