^^ Closer to his B1G roots, resets his clock, gets a raise, Purdue is AT WORST a lateral move from NCSU.

Anyone saying "pay the man" is an idiot. You don't think we can find another 8 win coach? We ALWAYS find an 8 win coach.

11/29/2017 2:49:33 PM
If Doeren actually ends up at Tennessee, his agent deserves some kind of award. As critical as I have been of Doeren, his leaving would be a critical blow to our program, and probably set us back 7-10 years. With Yow's retirement 2 years off, no established coach is going to want to take the risk of being on the hot seat once a new AD is hired. So we will end up with an unproven commodity, who probably will be fired after 3-4 years. That would then necessitate a complete rebuild by the coach who would follow. Meaning at least another 4-5 years of suckage until we could realistically expect to compete in conference again.Woe is the life of a pack fan.

it'd deal a significant blow to our recruiting in-state IMHOwe're > UNC on that front, but his already established in-roads with the next few years' recruits could flip them to Tenn
11/29/2017 2:53:55 PM
Drinkwitz should be promoted. Why the hell not. Who are we going to get that's going to be better near term?
11/29/2017 2:59:31 PM
^exactly, save some cash, see if it works. Try to keep the position coaches around for recruiting purposes. Won't be much different from with Doeren here. Maybe you get lucky and he's great. If not you are shopping in a better market when you are ready for it instead of making a bad snap decision now.

11/29/2017 3:02:52 PM
I mean, if I were a coach I'd probably go listen to what Tennessee had to say. Doesn't necessarily mean he's playing us for a raise..
11/29/2017 3:03:31 PM
lol, hell it's worth a call to see if Chad Morris wants to move back to the P5 from SMU. Can't hurt to ask.I just don't want to have to compete with an FSU opening this year.
11/29/2017 3:05:41 PM
Apparently the issue is yow doesnt wanna add a 5th year ti an extension. If he leaves because of that and we lose half our class, thats gonna be sad as fuck.
11/29/2017 3:06:42 PM
Why should we add a 5th year and raise now? He isn't special.
11/29/2017 3:12:38 PM
11/29/2017 3:14:18 PM
Well I for one think Tennessee would be dumb to get him because obviously theirs is a historic job that only the likes of Jon Gruden, Now Totally A Coach We Didn't Torch in Effigy Lane Kiffin, or Don Shula could fill.

If Doeren hated all of the "hot seat" rumors around our program and our insane fan base...he's going to be ready to quit after a week at UT. Hell the fan base will probably protest his hiring too.
11/29/2017 3:27:39 PM
If they wanna pay him I dont look forward to another coaching search but I don't blame him. Coaches can make such big figures now if you work your way up the ladder and get that high paying job and suck you are set for life so what does it matter. Make your way up while your name is hot otherwise if you stop climbing and then suck your climb is probably over.

Honestly I was perfectly content with extending him but if he's looking for an SEC payday then happy trails, 7-8 win coaches are a dime a dozen.[Edited on November 29, 2017 at 4:30 PM. Reason : .]

^i agree with that. thought i remembered some groaning about playcalling but i guess that probably was just in regards to red zone.
11/29/2017 4:57:06 PM
It's so bad I feel like we need to hire a red zone play caller.
11/29/2017 4:57:43 PM
I don't think he is calling the play calls. That's drink right?
11/29/2017 5:08:19 PM
^yeah it's drink, that's who i was referring to when a couple people said to promote him if DD leaves.wonder how much of that play calling is dictated by having a shitty kicker? i don't think there's much correlation there because the red zone play calling doesn't seem like it's trying to set up 4th and short to go for it...it's like "oh fuck we gotta get 20 yards let's try to get all 20 right now"
11/29/2017 5:11:28 PM
Drink's playcalling is terrible 100% of the time.He abandons shit when it's working to try things that fail miserably, and he keeps throwing passes out to the edges against defenses too fast to let that shit stand. And he put Mclendon in for the first play of the second half v UNCAnd he got cute with a backwards trick lateral back to Finley that almost cost us the BC game. The list goes on and on#astralengine4STMod
11/29/2017 5:20:46 PM
I think Drink can get a little cute with the presnap formations and movement and whatnot but generally the playcalling is solid. Besides he'd probably get a new OC to call plays if he was promoted anyway. I don't like having head coaches double as playcallers generally. It's just too much to do every play. They can dial up specific things here and there but let the guy in the booth with the better view handle the majority.
11/29/2017 5:21:00 PM
I think he's a good OC for the most part. His offenses typically have a zip and a rhythm, and he's good at attacking weaknesses and taking what the D gives him. I mean hell -- he just made Ryan Finley an All ACC player and potential early-round pick, which is miraculous. Three things that drive me crazy though: (1) His insistence on using the wildcat when it's never really worked (2) His obsession with trick/gadget plays when our normal offense is working fine. (3) His redzone playcalling ... just abyssmalStill, he's as good an OC as we've had in long time. Norm Chow long.
11/29/2017 5:40:02 PM
No, his redzone playcalling is garbage. We are 123rd in RZ scoring % (according to NCAA.com stats) and while some of that can be attributed to shit kickers, we were still only at 58% (31/53) on TD in the redzone. That isn't good.
11/29/2017 5:49:07 PM
Des Kitchings should get the job before Drink. You guys serious? All you woe is me people are lol worthy. We fired TOB and had a better record, way less coaching blunders, and less excuses after a loss. We will be fine.[Edited on November 29, 2017 at 6:33 PM. Reason : That quote up there from a coach says we would attract better than UT]
11/29/2017 6:33:07 PM
If DD has a problem with Yow then shouldn't her imminent retirement be a selling point for him to stay? He can be the face of our entire athletics program and have all the power he wants when the new AD comes in.
11/29/2017 6:50:08 PM
^i wondered about that. But if you hate your boss two years is a long time to wait imo. Sounds like, from giglio, he’s pissed that he was on the hot seat last year and now that he thinks he has leverage he’s gonna use it as much as he can. Problem is, 8-4 and possible interest from Tennessee isn’t a lotta leverage.
11/29/2017 7:12:38 PM
its really shitty that he was on the hotseat and I'm afraid the media will push the narrative that we "ran off a good coach" like they did with Herb.
11/29/2017 7:16:21 PM
After the backlash that muh fellow Vawls fans had towards Schiano, who has won double digit games in a P5 conference, I can't imagine them even pursuing Doeren, let alone offering him.
