there's also a course called Drake Landing out in Chalybeate, which is about the same distance away as deep river. It's a spacier course that requires a full/modified choke on most of the holes. I'd say it's slightly more challenging than Deep River.

Any place outdoors in Wake County one could go target shooting after 5pm? Most shooting ranges are out from the phone calls I've made. Just looking to borrow someone's field for an hour or so I guess.
4/25/2011 12:04:11 AM
anyone know the process for transferring a CCH to wake county? I can't rememberI'm guess I have to transfer it/change the address since my ID will have a new address?[Edited on April 25, 2011 at 2:18 PM. Reason : .]
4/25/2011 2:11:57 PM
yes, your address on your CHP must match the address on your state-issued photo ID or driver's license
4/25/2011 3:56:47 PM
I don't know about switching county to county, but change of address is simple enough- just went in, stood in line, and they gave me a new piece of paper to carry around with my CCP with my current address on it.
4/25/2011 4:00:29 PM
^old county or new county? wcso said go to old county to get it transferred... PITA to do that, but I like to double check since many people in gov't don't have a clue. old county has one person who does CCHs and he only works like 2 days a week
4/25/2011 4:23:37 PM
I'd try calling the sheriff's office here in Raleigh... and you do have a license with your new (current) address on it, correct?
4/25/2011 5:25:23 PM
^^ old county. I moved from Watauga to Wake, and Wake told me I had to go all the way back to Watauga, get some change of address paperwork, then bring that paperwork to them before they would give me the proper papers to show my new address. The lady at the Wake Sheriff's office was really hostile, too. Quite a change from the nice, old ladies behind the desk up in Boone.to clarify-yes, I did drive all the way back to Boone, get the paperwork, and bring it & my ID with new Wake address back to the lady in the Wake office[Edited on April 25, 2011 at 5:29 PM. Does it matter where I actually take the CC class? I live in Wake County, but I could take the class for dirt cheap back home (friend of my dad teaches it).
4/25/2011 5:34:02 PM
^nope^^thanks. damn sucks. I have no idea how I'm going to pull that off.
4/25/2011 6:42:38 PM
I just picked up my CCP in Pitt County, exactly a 60 day wait! I did it as a graduation present to myself, really no interest in carrying, but it will cut out the hassle of those 5 dollar permits. I was expecting to have to wait till next month, couldn't be more happy. I think I might be redneck and go to Wal-Mart in a sec with my new found pride... lol...
4/25/2011 6:54:49 PM
Looking for a Springfield M1A - does anyone have any suggestions of what to look for or stay away from?
4/26/2011 8:09:56 PM
Wait, you can get a CCP and not need to get pistol purchase permits? That might work for me, besides the whole not having a gun to shoot, since it would be a pain in the ass for me to go see the county sheriff to buy a permit.[Edited on April 26, 2011 at 8:29 PM. Reason : plus i was going to get a ccp anyway]
4/26/2011 8:29:05 PM
you're gonna have to go to the sheriff's office in the county your driver's license address is in a couple times to get a CHP[Edited on April 26, 2011 at 8:31 PM. Reason : if you take the class with Rush he has loaners for you to use][Edited on April 26, 2011 at 8:32 PM. Reason : and probably gonna have to wait like 90 days]

Any advice for resources (websites, books, etc) for someone wanting to get into gunsmithing? I mainly want to build a nice 1911 from a starter gun (STI Spartan) and also do some work on my AR's along with build an SBR upper (I have built lowers before no problem). I know the basics with guns but that is about it and I would really like to know the inner workings and know how to do some customization work myself.

Anyone going to the Raleigh gun show this weekend? Also I've been thinking about picking up one of those Draco AK pistols.
4/28/2011 1:09:33 PM
i'll be at the gunshow. prolly sunday may also go sat depending on my time. ^ what day are you going?
4/28/2011 1:40:51 PM
Probably saturday.
4/28/2011 6:31:12 PM
^^^^^I only had to go twice, once to drop off my application and get fingerprinted and the second to pick it up. The guy that did the class here even gave us the application. He happened to be a retired Sheriff though, I don't know if the other instructors do that.

Just bought a gsg-5, presumably one of the last made before the GSG vs HK settlement (pre gsg-522).Also picked up a primary arms micro-dot for it. Can do pics if anyone is interested, but really excited to finally have something cheap to shoot, especially for local indoor ranges that only allow handgun ammo
4/29/2011 12:15:13 AM
for those in the Fayetteville area:I found a coupon for a free day at the indoor range at Guns Plus. let the PDF load, scroll to the bottom, and you'll find the coupon. Alternatively, find a copy of this week's News Journal.http://thenews-journal.com/graphics/Bpages103.pdf(Disclosure: I've never been, so I don't if there is a catch, but may be worth looking into..)

Going to the show tomorrow looking for a cheap mosin!
4/29/2011 4:06:27 PM
I think I'm gonna go Sunday actually. Also considering a mosin.
4/29/2011 5:46:51 PM
Went to the gun show today. I was very disappointed with the prices. Last time I went, I could haggle a little bit. Even with a Midway ad, people thought I was making prices up. I was about to order some bullets when a gentleman behind me in line told me about Berry's Mfg. They have some pretty awesome online pricing... I was able to get 1k 165gr plated .40 shipped for $122. Same rounds were shy of $16 for a bag of 100. Prices on firearms were still negotiable somewhat, but selection was limited in my opinion. Got a decent deal on powder and primers, although powder selection was quite limited. Quite a few powders are no longer being carried by merchants due to low demand.[Edited on April 30, 2011 at 7:45 PM. Reason : .]

Serious legal question. I think I understand correctly that in NC, you are not legally allowed to shoot a person unless you are in immediate mortal danger. What if you witness someone else in immediate mortal danger, though? You see something truly serious about to happen, draw, command the attacker to stop, and they do not? Although my general rule is, "if they ain't threatenin' me, then let the police handle it," I have no idea what the law says about this. I ask this because I observed a very serious domestic dispute in my neighborhood last week in which I had to call 911. Although I didn't see a weapon drawn by either person involved and was not about to get involved, I wondered what legal status an observer might have if it came down to a situation in which the observer KNEW they had to intervene to attempt to defend the life of another person. Conversely, could a person be legally liable if this exact situation happened, but they did NOT act to prevent a fatality (e.g. Good Samaritan backfire)?
4/30/2011 11:00:28 PM
In North Carolina, it IS legally permissible to use deadly force to defend the life another person under basically the same circumstances you would use deadly force to defend your own. However, one thing that I found really interesting from my recent CCW class is that it's very tricky to know who's at fault. If you are attacked and you must defend yourself, it's all good (relatively speakings), but if you are jumping into someone else's shit, you only know the part of the story you just rolled up on. So, despite the legality, it's probably only a good idea to consider it under circumstances where you feel comfortable knowing or predicting the whole story (like if you walk up on someone being raped, etc.).
4/30/2011 11:47:32 PM
^ how do you know who is raping who? also, is rape considered "life threatening"?
5/1/2011 12:13:35 AM
The law isn't "life threatening." The law is "a) The citizen actually believes deadly force is necessary to prevent an imminent threat of death, great bodily harm, or sexual assault"
5/1/2011 12:37:09 AM
Picked up a new in box H&K P2000SK in .357 sig at the show today. Now to get a proper holster.
5/1/2011 10:01:24 PM
Yep, there are better people here to explain legal issues but I'll take a stab.If you believe your being threatened with death, serious injury, or sexual assault you can use lethal force. Shoot him.If you see a guy minding his own business and watch the bad guy sneak up behind from out of the woods and start attacking the guy, then he pulls out a knife and starts to stab.... Shoot him. If you walk around the corner and see a guy with a knife about to stab someone... hold up.The person about to get stabbed may be trying to kill the person with the knife who is trying to defend themselves. If you start an argument and they pull out a knife... Don't shoot, you'll go to jail. You have to "declare your intention to leave the fight" Then you can defend yourself. If someone else is involved make sure you know what's going on. Lives depend on it. The CCW class is a good thing for any gun owner.[Edited on May 1, 2011 at 10:11 PM. Reason : ]
5/1/2011 10:06:58 PM
Better just call up your lawyer before you draw. Also a good idea to ask your attacker if he intends to inflict great bodily harm or to sexually assault you. Probably should go ahead and get him to sign a notarized statement of his intentions.
5/1/2011 11:21:59 PM
I think the Sexual Assault item is the most vague. Grabbing a girl's ass is considered sexual assault, where is the line?
5/2/2011 12:53:44 AM
^^^ I thought they ruled against that or something. I thought once you could be considered an aggressor or instigator you could no longer use deadly force.[Edited on May 2, 2011 at 9:03 AM. Reason : more ^]
5/2/2011 9:02:51 AM
in the video they show you in CC class, there's a guy who starts an argument/fight with another guy. as it escalates, the instigator tries to retreat and repeatedly says "i'm out" while holding his hands up. the other guy keeps after him, and the instigator draws his weapon. the video, which was made by the state of north carolina, states that this is legal.it's very subjective. imo the bottom line is, if you think it's worth going to prison to prevent events from happening, then you should use deadly force. to hell with the law. the law is gonna say to hell with you, so fuck it. i'd go to prison to save my own life and/or the lives of my friends and family. i'm probably not gonna chance it if i don't know you. sorry.that's just how i see it. decide for yourself, but the "worth prison?" decision is a lot easier for me to make in a split second than the "hmm, what does the syntax and verbage of a law book seem to say for this situation?" decision.

Back to ammunition:What round do you think Osama was killed with? 5.56 / 7.62 / 9mm / 10mm / .45? I'm going to guess 5.56, I think the special ops guys tend to use 9mm / 10mm when there are hostages around or someone on the other side of the building or wall they don't want to hit, in this case I don't think they cared too much about that. But at the same time, they may have wanted to attempt to at least take him silently which could be done a lot easier with 9mm
5/2/2011 10:49:45 AM
5/2/2011 11:44:24 AM
^^It was a kill mission and the helicopters were loud, so that rules out 9/10mm.7.62 is a bigger round used in machine guns, so I too bet it was 5.56

minus tax, that is the price you will pay at jim's gunshop out in garner (for the same package). And then you don't have to deal with any of the shipping/ffl/etc crap... Just give him a call, tell him what you're looking for (and the prices you've seen) and go pick one up! or I hear fuquay gun and gold (or whatever it is called) is good too
5/4/2011 9:41:50 AM
500s are real common and real cheap, they were selling lightly used models at the gun show for $215
5/4/2011 9:51:43 AM
I've got a 500 and a 590.My 500 was used with a 18.5 and 26'' barrel for $240.
