Sorry, when I played you usually didn't have long drawn out conversation with referees and only called them refs. If you still understood what I was referring to, I don't understand the fuss.

^Yes, there's one and two assistants.

Anyways, we lucked out in the second half with just a draw, including the BS Johnson call.

That was a GOAL and it should have been a foul 1 ft. outside the box aka a great place for Landon to take a free one.

We're arguing about whether they're called refs or officials or ref and assistants and then we wonder why people hate soccer fans.

it was a close call, it happens. Sometimes they go for you and sometimes they go against. I am not a big fan of video replays in football. It keeps the human element in the game. Its frustrating sometimes. Also video replays would create this problem on a lot of goals:

Player is through but the referee blew the whistle. The defender and GK stopped reacting because the whistle was blown but the ball ended up in the back of the net. What do you do in this situation? The goal clearly shouldn't stand. Football is about judgement and mistakes will happen.

As we've seen in college basketball this year, video replays slow the game down and a lot of times, they still don't even get the call right. I'm scared of introducing any official stoppages into the game because that just opens the door for commercials.

The goal line deal with the watch they have now is all the technology I want to see in the game.

Its not even needed in basketball. Soccer is a game where 1 goal changes everything. If this was a real game we would never be able to live with the fact that we got screwed out of the world cup.

You don't ever raise a flag for offside with replay. Everybody plays everything through. Guy in the booth reviews the play and buzzes down to the official to raise the flag or not. Its easy to go back and take a goal away but you can't go back and add a goal that was scored after a bad call. This is what they do with out of bounds in football.

Who cares if you slow down soccer. Its already slow and 1 goal is so important. Its like 20 points in basketball.

huh? I guess it depends on your definition of "slow". It has nothing to do with the pace of the game when the ball is in play but the fact that there are already complete stoppages and extended breaks in action in a sport like football.

Once players are allowed to take up to 40 seconds to throw the ball in, take a corner, take a goal kick, take a free kick, etc. then you can start using football replays as a basis example for replays in soccer.

I care.

We live with bad officiating in every sport, even sports with magical instant replay. I don't need my 90 minutes of soccer interrupted every 5 minutes to watch some assholes stare at a monitor.

You could also put a gps chip in the ball and on the players and the alarm goes off if its offside.

You could.

You could also invent a robot referee who would never make a mistake.

I don't see how that would would work as the player, not the ball, is offside. Plus, players can be in an offside position and not necessarily be flagged for it depending on their involvement in the play.

Changing the subject, I think Klinsy has to take Green to the WC, if nothing else for the experience.

If he is going to as important to the US as we think he is, then you need to take him so that he gets to experience everything around the World Cup and has a base to draw on for 2018. It doesn't even matter if he plays much, if at all. Just let him go practice with the team, be in the changing room, and be a sub on the bench to watch first hand.

flagging? I have clearly just said I don't expect United to win in the next round but I wouldn't be surprised if United did because the individual ability is there but United haven't played with the cohesion that I saw yesterday all year (except for Arsenal at home). Its hilarious if people think this team isn't all of a sudden good enough (same team that destroyed the EPL last year). Managerial decisions and lack of confidence have been the biggest reasons for United's struggle not individual ability. Some thickheaded people in here.

You guys are the one hoping United get flagged.

Because Fifa cannot control the outcomes of certain games if replay is implemented.

There are plenty of good arguments for no instantreplay but that isn 't one. The game already has 22 human element. The human ele ment you refer to is when someone not playing makes me mistake that fucks the game.

Also, instead of instant replay, how about more refs? Football has twice the refs on a smaller field. The assistant ref made that offsides call from all the way across the field, how about having another guy on the other side?

I dunno, I don't think it's that simple of a fix. The problem isn't being in the right position, it's being able to tell the exact second the ball was kicked and the position of the player. Having somebody on the closer side doesn't necessarily guarantee that gets fixed.

I agree about more officials though and I think the goal line referee should be mandatory in all higher level competitions now.

The answer would be to review every goal in the booth after the fact. if they find that someone was offside before the ball changed hands again then disallow the goal. if someone goes offside and loses the ball or doesn't score a goal, who cares?

^ will never happen because FIFA are stuck in the 1950s

Anyway, appears to be a done deal the 2016 "Centenario" Copa America will be held in the U.S.

all 10 CONMEBOL countries qualify automatically
Mexico and the U.S. qualify automatically
champions of the 2014 Central American and Caribbean championships qualify automatically
two remaining spots to be decided in the 2015 Gold Cup

Remember the '07 Copa America where we finished dead last and Ricardo Clark scored our only goal in open play?

That was pretty cool.

So twitter is abuzz about Gedion Zelalem getting US citizenship. This would be fantastic news. Broke in to Arsenals 18 as a 16 year old and is exactly the creative type under 20 we need in the system. Kid is going to be a star. Get him signed up, Klinnsman.
