Since I don't keep up with other schools' coaching searches, was Marshall listed as a candidate for other schools recently? What were their fans saying about him? Do they hate guys that win at mid-majors too?

If KenPom matters so much, they are ranked 28th before tonight's game so that will be even higher tomorrow.

http://www.kenpom.com/team.php?team=Wichita%20St.

Alabama, VTech, SDSU, VCU, and UConn were their top 50 teams. They went 2-3. This is a mid-major team competing with majors.

[Edited on March 31, 2011 at 11:05 PM. Reason : He was rumored at Tennessee and is at OU as well]

[Edited on March 31, 2011 at 11:06 PM. Reason : VCU checkin in at 49 even with a FF run]

Other schools know where they stand on the totem pole and would feel good about getting Marshall. Definitely the case on the GT boards.

Seriously, the guy would have us getting 10 conference wins consistently WHICH IS WHAT WE SHOULD BE SHOOTING FOR. No one, and I mean NO ONE is going to come to State and start running shit in the ACC immediately. Certainly not Shaka.

Is anyone going to be happy with the new head coach or is it going to be a bitch fest until he wins his first game against UNC or Duke?

There are two guys who consistently win 10+ games in the ACC: K and Roy.

Think about what you're saying here.

Well as much as I hate to say it we DO have a place. And right now, it's not the top of the ACC. Some day, yes. But you don't just jump from 5-11 to 15-1 and elite 8's overnight. Doesn't. Happen.

Dude HERB basically had us there. 9 wins twice (close enough to 10, +/- 1), 10 wins, 11 wins, with a 7 game dip in there. Herb could do it.

Things that boozie (and many others) hated about Lowe:
Too big of a rotation
Running too many set plays

Greggs calling cards:
A huge rotation
Running mostly set plays

Right now dismissing all the pipe dream candidates
Grant>Smart>....>Archie Miller> Julius Hodge> Gavin Grant (maybe we could get him released from prison)>Greggggggggggggg

So if Herb could do it then why is OUR PLACE at the bottom of the ACC regardless of the coach

So consistently winning 10+ games means not doing it until your 8th season

Unless you count seasons that weren't 10+ wins

That's a pretty funny definition

Who said our place is the bottom? All I'm saying is do it in steps. Bottom -> 10ish wins consistently (usually good for top 3rd) -> then start trying to go for more. There are no shortcuts to the top, and that's what State fans can't understand.

I mean all Gregg did tonight was beat Grant's ass with a mid-major team.

lol there are no shortcuts to go from the bottom to the top 1/3, you just have to start from the bottom and then the next step is 10 wins (which is good for top 1/3)!

Derp? Yeah it took Herb awhile but 4/5 of his last years were 9+ wins, top 3rd of the conference. CONSISTENTLY. I see NO REASON why Marshall can't do it (and possibly more every now and then) if Herb can.

Actually he is. Winning more than 22 games in a single season. Look it up, we haven't done that in decades .

I will repeat it again Gregg Marshall is known for doing the things that state fans hate:
Huge rotations
Running set plays almost exclusively

I don't think fans would hate those if they were successful.

Marshall gets big points from guys off the bench.
Sid would sit guys who were getting hot.

Everyone understands that. No one wants Shaka because they think he'll take us to the final four next year. We want him over Marshall because he's at least proven that he can do it. Marshall hasn't even proven that he can get past the first weekend. And at a school that plays in what is usually a decent mid-major conference, Marshall hasn't proven that he can even get to the tournament.

Hire Marshall and in four to five years we're all going to be bitching about not making deep runs, just like with Herb. Hire Smart and he might fall flat, but he's at least shown the ability to do something worth a damn.

Who gives a fuck if he proves that he can do something worth a damn if he can't do it HERE?

The way I look at it, realistically the best we can get out of Marshall or Shaka in the next 5 years is 10-ish wins and maybe a S16 run. You are dreaming if you think just because Shaka made a F4 once, with a different team means he has any hope of doing it here.

So just so we're clear. You think our ceiling is a Sweet 16. So to reach that ceiling you want to hire a coach that has never reached it before instead of the guy in the Final Four.

Marshall looks like he could at least do as well as Herb, so yeah, I think he could. Shaka couldn't do better than 4th and 5th in his conference but hey, a F4 run means he's gonna run shit in the ACC!!!

because the same players will run marshalls set plays so much better.

pretty much everyone who watched our games said sid had great offensive sets, but the execution by the players was not good.

Does not compute. If the sets are good, the players can run them. You don't make up plays that none of your guys can execute well. This is where coaching is important. Knowing your team and knowing how to use them correctly.

Honestly, why do you think Shaka will automatically have worse results with different players at State (NCAA run aside) and Marshall will automatically have better results with different players? Granted a lot of the NCAA success is from extremely hot 3 shooting, but Shaka will have a recruiting edge on name recognition alone and his potential is so much higher it's absurd

You're right. I doubt he'll ever be able to reach a sweet 16 ever again. Let's hire the guy who doesn't get past the first round.

I'm convinced.
