You are joking but we nearly landed one of the best ever and instead got the worst ACC coach in history

Whether the pizza deal was the dealbreaker or not, most of us will never know

Either way fuck Lee Fowler

Sidney Lowe, Bob Wade, Bob Staak, Jeff Bzdelik take your pick. 25–55 (.313) speaks for itself.

calling lowe the worst coach in ACC history is not overdramatic. it's a damn fact.

[Edited on February 15, 2017 at 11:57 AM. Reason : he's arguably the worst coach in NBA history as well.]

Lowe was awful, but he didn't touch the putridness of Bzdelik. That dude was the worst college coach I'd ever seen.

1) What Herb did at Arizona State (probably the worst P5 basketball school) does not affect what he did at NCSU.

2) Herb's last 5 teams averaged roughly the same amount of points we did in Gott's first five years.

3) His offensive ratings were actually better than defense. We were a pretty solid club.

2002 North Carolina St. 21 Overall 33 Offense 26 Defense
2003 North Carolina St. 50 Overall 29 Offense 90 Defense
2004 North Carolina St. 9 Overall 4 Offense 35 Defense
2005 North Carolina St. 23 Overall 17 Offense 49 Defense
2006 North Carolina St. 32 Overall 30 Offense 67 Defense

Not sure why this shit is relevant.

Yeah, no. I think it had more to do with one Sweet 16 in a 10 year span that included the Doherty era at UNC.

The Herb era was like gnashing teeth. Nothing but missed opportunities, head-scratching losses to bad teams, an inability to win pretty much any game where we were an underdog and heartbreaking big games because Herb was so married to his Princeton offense.

Herb's last year it looked like he'd turned the corner. We were ranked most of the year, looked really solid, 10-3 in ACC, then lost at home to UNC by 24. The wheels fell apart rest of the season, and it was obvious to everyone - even Herb - it was just time for him to move on.

The yelling stuff at his daughters thing was pretty terrible, but overall Herb had just run his course at State. If he was so good, he'd have won at Arizona State.

What do you not understand? Even with arguably the worst coach in UNC history, Herb couldn't climb the hill to the top of the ACC for a title.

did Doherty coach those monster Duke teams, too?

the same Duke team we had down double digits in the ACC Title game before Redick went into God Mode?

In no way, shape or form would Archie allude to taking this job at this point in Dayton's season.

this. seriously, he's not going to say shit and that's what the politically correct thing to do is. flip this around - Arhcie has NOT come out and outright squashed the rumors, denied having any interest, etc. He just hasn't commented, and the longer he goes without public comment on the not-even-official State job, the better it bodes for us. If he speaks publicly about this job before Dayton's season is over, it will not be good for us.

There have been feelers placed with other coaches that the position is "likely to be open" gauging their interest is what sporting news said. That's from multiple sources.

But pay won't allure these guys since it's basically standard across the board.

Wonder what Tubby Smith is up to these days.

Archie should just come out and say "I dont give a shit about State". Speak in code words which the brilliant minds of PP/TWW can easily decipher.

from what i've read, those feelers are most likely people peripheral to the program such as boosters and former players, NOT the athletic department. Same for those sources.

i'd be ok with matta. not really crazy about the idea of a retread in general though. but obviously he's had success at OSU. are you guessing he gets fired this year?

there's no such thing as a slam dunk hire given our options (obviously Brad Stevens would be a slam dunk, but he's not coming). no matter what, you're taking a risk. i don't think we should be afraid to go the up and comer route. if one of your job requirements is P5 experience, there aren't many veteran coaches with a winning pedigree at P5 schools that are gonna leave their current job to come here. so once you cross those guys off our list, we're down to guys that have P5 experience but are either 1) not currently coaching (like Gott was last time) or 2) maybe disgruntled with their current P5 situation and open to leaving (a Jamie Dixon situation from last year). but either way, both of those options come with their own set of baggage and are far from being great hires, IMO. going the up and comer route is risky but has a potential better pay off in the end.

Honestly, without knowing a ton about him...seems similar to hiring les miles in football. Like, yeah he's had success on a big stage. But probably not enough success given the talent. And we think he would do better at a school with less resources?

^^ I probably shouldn't have said less resources, I don't know about that specifically. In other words. If Matta can't get it done at OSU, what makes us think he'd get it done here? That's what I was trying to express.

Ohio State fans hate Matta. The feeling of Buckeye fans towards Matta is similar to how ours was towards Sendek.

Do you guys really think we have more resources than OSU? They basically get the pick of who they want recruiting-wise in the state of Ohio. We have to compete against Duke/UNC.

I don't think Les Miles is a terrible comparison to Matta. Tons of talent, doesn't do enough with it.
