i kinda get the impression that Finley is kinda a back up plan as opposed to a desperation move at QB. maybe he'll win the starting spot, maybe not. but i don't think it's a situation where he was recruited to come here because Jakobi and McLendon were terrible or anything. more capable players is always better than having fewer capable players, especially at a position like QB. in the W&M and OCU games - maybe ECU game as well - i wouldn't be surprised to see at least two of the QBs to get meaningful snaps. but we'll see. i don't necessarily expect any of these guys to be great, but i don't think it's a stretch at all to expect average play from that position.[Edited on July 20, 2016 at 9:20 AM. Ramos to redshirt after knee surgery
7/20/2016 9:56:34 AM
Damn can we go one year without losing a key guy
7/20/2016 9:58:06 AM
that's a tough blow to our WRs. we still have good play makers like cherry and hines along with some young, unproven guys. but ramos was one of our bigger, more experienced WRs.[Edited on July 20, 2016 at 9:58 AM. Reason : nn]

Finley lost his starting gig to a younger player, no way he was staying where he was. Why not go to a school for 1-year where they don't have a returning starter and you already know the coach and the system? Would have to think that would give you a leg-up on winning the job. I don't think he's in the same ballpark talent-wise, but he knows the system, so if he is starting it means our guys didn't pick up the system fast enough.
7/20/2016 10:06:39 AM
i read an interview with Drinkwitz where he was saying how he was honest with Finley about coming in a competing and not being guaranteed anything and that Finley was obviously aware that he wasn't necessarily coming here to be the presumed starter. so while that all may be coach-speak, i think it's probably pretty accurate as well.
7/20/2016 10:30:42 AM
With Ramos gone, look for Stephen Louis to get most of the looks.I think he will be a fine replacement but still hurts losing Ramos for the year...big time.

a team has definitely gone into Week 1 with questions at QB and still gone on to have a fine season. it's not ideal, but getting these guys game experience can only be a good thing. i'm not saying any of them will go on to be all-time great QBs. but not knowing who our QB is at this point is not a red flag at all. It's only a matter of time before Life with Jakobi... Meyers, begins. It will the dawn of a new era at state. Our depleted receiving Corp will actually be a blessing in disguise for Meyers and the pack, as our offensive passing game will revolve more through creative playcalling and smoke and mirrors, quick slants (RBs (Hines, Samuels) catching balls outta backfield , etc). That, combined with jakobis wheels are gonna give opposing defenses fits.Think RGiiis rookie year with Washington type shit.[Edited on July 20, 2016 at 10:51 PM. ^ Through the first 3 games maybe.
7/20/2016 10:59:42 PM
im pretty comfortable with the offense either way and think its going to come down to the defense not being dogshit again.
7/20/2016 11:20:40 PM
Dline should be great, lb should be decent, secondary is only thing that worries me. Tocho needs to take a big step forward.
7/21/2016 8:02:43 AM
^agreed. partially the secondary's fault last year - but on the whole our D was ok last year, not great but decent at least. but we (seemed particularly the secondary, maybe LBs as well) had a propensity to give up big plays while otherwise playing fine D. that, obviously, needs to stop this year.
7/21/2016 9:09:39 AM
i'd love to see us be a very run heavy offense, sort of the game plan that led us to run all over wake and unc two years ago (two lousy defenses i know, but still). you'd think we have the talent on the line and at rb to make it work, and would be the best way to make up for an average/below average qb.
7/21/2016 10:02:25 AM
i think we can and should have a very strong run game. the problem is if/when we become too predictable or unable to provide any variety in the offense. the pass needs to at least be a threat for the run game to consistently be good.[Edited on July 21, 2016 at 10:19 AM. Reason : f]

I think the Ramos injury could be a blessing in disguise. I think any bowl game this year will be an accomplishment because of the schedule and breaking in a new QB. The 2017 year is one that I'm excited about because practically our entire defense will be seniors, with still a ton of weapons on offense (Hines, Samuels, RGII, Fraiser, Cook, Louis, Ramos, etc.) with an improved O-line and QB.
7/21/2016 10:43:45 AM
Looking ahead to the next season before the season starts. It's a whole new ballgame boys.

^^ Just stating that on paper (I know that doesn't always mean results) that the 2017 season will be Doeren's deepest team that he's had.
7/21/2016 2:40:23 PM
^If we have another awful year, then the new coach will certainly appreciate having that deep and talented roster.

83 ranked DE in his class. Since he never played and were deep at that position, it probably wont hurt much but he definitely could have been a contributor.
7/25/2016 8:48:30 AM
that guy had offers from campbell and ecu. he was going to be the turning point to helping us win the state
7/25/2016 5:28:45 PM
you and hey now have fun arguing against this strawmanare we really that deep at DE? We signed zero last year and it has been a position of focus this season in recruiting. Depth is crucial on a football team. This may not be a big deal, but it seems weird to just brush off losing a player unless he was booted for performance reasons.[Edited on July 25, 2016 at 6:34 PM. thats fair, and i violated rule 1 twice in a row
7/25/2016 7:14:16 PM
Chubb, Roseboro, Holden, Riley, Street if needed, Brown if he doesn't need to RS. Then we already have 2 committed for 2017. Our DL will be fine.

7/25/2016 9:40:34 PM
It's Meyers. McClendon took like 3 snaps during junk time last year. If he were the QB of the future, he would have played more. Meyers is also a better fit for the system

Eh, what else can you do but shrug? Sucks, but again, at least it wasn't a starter, or even a definite back-up this season.
7/26/2016 9:37:01 AM
So we go from having 4 unknown players to 3 unknown players? Not a huge step back there. Olenga might have been a contributor down the road, but we'll survive. Stinks to lose him but it's not like we don't have other players with as high(or higher) potential as him coming in, so not something to get worked up about. The kid obviously broke some serious team rules, and after Doeren removed Shad, these kids should know that back-ups breaking rules aren't going to get a free pass.
7/26/2016 9:43:41 AM
This needs to be the year Roseboro and Street dominate. I expect good stuff from Chubb, but the first 2 have the potential to kill it. If we are to exceed expectations, it will be due in large part to those 2, IMO.
7/26/2016 10:46:22 AM
For some reason Gigiglo is watching film from last year on Samuels. In 3 games he had 7 tds on 21 touches.Out of almost 100 snaps. No wonder Canada was canned.
7/27/2016 7:10:44 PM
Yeah and he did the same thing before with Shad. Canada would apparently rather everyone get plenty of touches than getting the best players the ball.
7/27/2016 7:29:03 PM
the offense will be interesting this year...of course a lot will depend on QB play. but we've got some serious play makers with Dayes, Hines, Samuels, Gallaspy, (we hope) Johnny Frasier...and while our WRs aren't really a strength, Bra'lon Cherry has shown flashes of being a big play threat and Dayes is lethal as a pass catcher...and obviously Hines and Samuels are versatile and can be dangerous at multiple positions. [Edited on July 27, 2016 at 7:49 PM. Reason : ff]
7/27/2016 7:47:06 PM
the versatility of hines and samuels is the big reason i'm not overly concerned about the loss of ramos. we have plenty of playmakers on offense that can be used at various positions, and you'd have to think we're going to game plan in such a way that gets them the ball as much as possible, but not in a way that doing so means running the same type of play over and over, while trying to cover up areas where we're weak (e.g., qb as we're speculating).
7/28/2016 6:42:53 AM
I mean our rushing attack should be really good, but unless we can actually develop a more serious passing attack than last year, we're going to continue to struggle against good teams. Our top receiving option(by a large margin) was our FB/TE last year. That can't happen again this year.
7/28/2016 8:52:56 AM
well it can. because jaylen samuels is amazeballs.
7/28/2016 9:26:55 AM
we scored 41, 34, and 28 against Clemson unc and miss state. that isn't really struggling. most teams struggle against good teams. other than the 2 games in the rain adjusting to shad, our offense rolled over everyour defense
7/28/2016 9:37:03 AM
7/28/2016 10:41:04 AM
I mean I want Samuels to be heavily involved in the offense, the kid is super talented and can be used all over the field. We just really need a legit passing attack so teams don't just stack the box against us every play. I mean end-arounds and gadget plays are great, but we definitely need a down-the-field passing attack to keep defenses a bit more honest.
7/28/2016 11:15:57 AM
Thinking about coming into town for the Miami game. If we are undefeated, do you think it will be a primetime night game?
7/28/2016 11:26:31 AM
