Purvis fancied himself as a player like Marcus Smart, a great athlete and leader who makes things happen with the ball in his hands. That's the kind of player he was in high school, and I'm sure everyone in his circle was telling him that would be his role at State.

Unfortunately, he doesn't have the ball skills, clutch play or natural leadership ability of Smart. He doesn't finish as well around the basket. He's a good athlete, but not as good as Smart. The only thing they share is the inability to shoot from outside.

A lot of recruiting services said Purvis could be a PG in college. Probably got his head all big. Truth is, he wasn't a PG. Just a strong, athletic guy whose skills were still pretty raw. Here's his Scout write up

Quote :
"Purvis is a guy that can play both lead guard and scoring guard. Currently classified as a point guard, Purvis has terrific vision and is a talented passer. With that said, he's a high-level scorer as well, that can put the ball in the basket in a variety of ways. His end-to-end speed and athleticism is what stands out the most and he's a terrific finisher once near the rim. "

^^yeah i posted that video as well, which is why i remember what he said

its all a high school kid saying stuff, but i trust a one-on-one interview to show what his actual thoughts more than clowning around with lewis, warren, suilamon and paige

I never saw the video of him saying he would be a one and done but I did see the video of him saying he wanted to play 4 years and graduate so I stand corrected.

Marcus Smart is about as gifted offensively as Purvis. Though he at least has some PG skills where as Purvis has none. The reason Smart is a 1 and done top 5 draft pick is because he plays great defense and is a winner. Rodney didnt put in the work to be that. That's the role Gott wanted him to play this season but it didnt work out.

It may make sense for Purvis to try and mold himself as a point, I just don't see the current player he is being suited for it.

Zo averaged 3.7apg playing 2 guard for Sidney Lowe. If Purvis had any ability at all to play the point we wouldve seen it this year

From a depth standpoint this is pretty rough.

From a program in the long run standpoint... Need guys that want to be here and if you don't no ill will but cya. Can't beg/promise players playing time. Earn it.

I don't know who Purvis thought he was, or what people around him said to over-inflate his ego, but I saw Purvis play 15 games this year from the front of the student section and at the dean dome and colisuem, and for the entire year he played like a freshman. He was usually a little too out of control, taking the wrong shots at the wrong time, and not finishing consistently enough at the rim. His enthusiasm was there at times and (much like Leslie) his tempo and mood would wax and wane. He just didn't have the talent of a one-and-done. He was usually one of the first on-court warming up two hours before the game, and he sure as shit tried, so I don't think work ethic was a problem. I met him once on campus during the season and he was respectful to me when I told him good game. I listened to his interview with Tony and Gary after he dropped 21 on BC at home and heard him talk about how things that happened this season were very humbling for him, and that he felt he was more mature after seeing the game from the bench.

But I got no love for flaky players (or flaky people in general), and if at the end of the day he takes everything into account and turns his back on NC State, then to him I say don't let the door hit your ass on the way out. And should you ever return to the PNC arena in an opponent's jersey, I will boo you viciously.

Purvis was a freshman this year, and for the most part he played like a freshman. He had some highs and lows. He struggled with his jump shot, couldn't finish around the rim at times, and was pretty bad at the FT line. He's obviously a good player with tons of potential and he showed that at times this season. But he was our starting 2 guard from day 1 and basically played his way out of the starting lineup. I guess he and the staff just had different ideas of what his role on the team was. Losing 4 of our starting 5, Purvis and TJW were set to be our go to guys next year. He'd have his chance to prove himself, with a year of experience under his belt. It's not like he got recruited over or wasn't given a fair shake. He had his chances and was going to get plenty more in 13-14. It's pretty clear he just didn't want to be here anymore...I wish him well.

And then again at Georgia Southern 2 years after that.

i wish we hired a coach that would just recruit humble basketball players and build a basketball team around defense and teamwork instead of all this hoop dreams bullshit.

Right now it would probably be some rotation of this sort:

PG: Lewis 30 - Barber - 10
Wing: Lee 30 - Barber - 10
Wing: Turner 30 - Warren - 10
Post: Warren 25 - Washington - 15
Post: Anya 25 - Washington - 10 - Vandy 5

Hopefully this means we get Lee who looks good. Add Lennard Freeman or some JUCO big and we could be okay. Anya has GOT to get in better shape. Washington hopefully will be ready to play from day one.

For baseball, we got a workout packet and all sorts of info over the summer. Obviously they can't make you do it. But he'll have 2-3 months of working out and running, maybe more if he chooses.. I'm sure he'll be in at least ok shape

Is there ANY substance to Tyler Lewis transfer rumors? That would probably send me over the edge. He's the one guy I thought we could count on to be a solid four year player.

Of course they are. We aren't any different from any other program. We aren't any different than UNC fans. We aren't any different than Duke fans.

Fans throw recruits who go elsewhere under the bus ("We didn't want him anyway!" or "Player X is better anyway even though he is a fringe Top 75!") and they call transfers soft, shitty or pussy.

Never will change. Rodney doesn't sound like a bad guy, but he does sound like a guy who had no clue what his role would be in Gotts offense and should have.

Really need to get some positive news after all of this. A Lee commitment would do a world of good for this program right now...and maybe some affirmations from Lewis and Warren about being commited to the team and ready for next year.

If true, are you insinuating that he was going to have to sit to get his grades up anyhow, so the "sitting one year" part of the equation was irrelevant?

the 'wanting to play PG' part doesn't make sense to me.

Zo already had the position locked down coming into the season

And you came in the recruiting class with Lewis, who is a natural PG

What did you think would happen?

So if you're a scholarship athlete that's failing out, you can just put in a transfer to another university and it doesn't matter?

Not sure how that works, but if it's true that's bullshit

you have to be in good academic standing to transfer so that can't be true.

playing PG is probably the best shot he has for going to the NBA. I don't think he has the handling/speed but maybe if he works on it? we tried him at the point a few games when Brown was out and Lewis was still getting his stride
