over recruited?dude averaged 8 assists/game for the #1 basketball team in the nation. if anything, he was under recruited as the #73 prospect in his class
3/30/2014 1:46:22 PM
Best recruiting class since.. 2010? Not that they stuck around either.
3/30/2014 1:52:23 PM
wish him the best, we all knew this was coming and Cat is the future. If he stayed to be a backup, then I wouldve been surprised.
3/30/2014 1:57:40 PM
I mean you can't blame a guy for leaving when the coach tells you you're gonna get benched for a player not as good as you.

I think we all knew we were going to lose one of the PGs in the offseason. I like Tyler a lot, and I think he'd be great to have on bench, but I'd be much more upset about losing Cat.Tyler is pretty much what he is at this point -- a gifted passer who's undersized, un-athletic, can't really shoot, and struggles mightily on defense. Cat can potentially be a scoring force and a terror on defense. He's still got a ways to go, but at least the potential is there.[Edited on March 30, 2014 at 5:26 PM. Reason : ]
3/30/2014 5:26:07 PM
Ok, I'll be the first to say it. I would have rather had Tyler over Cat. Cat has a lot more upside for development but as it stands I think Tyler is the better PG and game manager. He's also hit some clutch shots recently to keep us in the game. Granted, cat has better d and draws coverage because he can get inside and score, but he's gotta calm down and make better decisions, which I think he will. I'll miss you Tyler, you didn't ever get a fair shake and I understand your decision. All the best.
3/30/2014 5:44:26 PM
how did he not get a fair shake?
3/30/2014 5:49:37 PM
3/30/2014 5:53:32 PM
^ that
3/30/2014 5:58:48 PM
so i wonder how things would change if he made that shot vs st louis.
3/30/2014 6:16:50 PM
^ you mean how fan reaction to him transferring would change? Or his decision changing?I'm guessing his decision wouldn't have changed. And fans would be a little more upset about it just because of recency bias.
3/30/2014 6:20:39 PM
I get him not playing ahead of Zo as a freshman, but when Zo was out with injury Tyler was great. He deserved to be the starter this year but Gott pulled him every time he made a mistake, which wrecked his confidence. Every time we left him in long enough to get in stride, he did very well. As far as "not getting a fair shake" I mean that Gott very obviously favored Cat even when he turned it over constantly. Cat got way more chances. It wasn't until the end of the season that we finally benched Cat long enough for Tyler to actually play. Granted, Cat benefited from that as well and was much more careful. I just see why Lewis has been frustrated - Gott gave the benefit of the doubt to a freshman that hadn't proved himself over Lewis from the start.
3/30/2014 7:26:12 PM
I think we lose a lot of games this season without Lewis, our offense is stagnant without him. If Cat can learn to drive and dish we will be fine, but he seems to think he has to take it to the hole against a double/triple team every time.
3/30/2014 8:06:44 PM
Gott handled the PG situation as well you possibly could this year. Lewis had plenty of chances early in the season. He got benched for sucking. We were 2-2 with losses to a low major when it happened. Cat returned the favor during ACC play but Tyler hadn't really earned the job back. At least Cat played well off the bench. Tyler mostly sulked. This is major college basketball. You aren't given "time to get into the game." You either earn it or you don't. He played well to close the year once he actually started making some shots and was clearly a better fit for a roster with TJ Warren on it. Next year's roster where we need scoring more than passing? Not as much. I still say neither guy gave us what we needed for most of the year but that happens with underclassmen. Hopefully Cat develops and sticks around for a while.
3/30/2014 8:15:23 PM
cat is not gonna go pro. neither will lewis. they're great for NCAA play but I just don't see them doing anything in the pros. I hope I'm wrong, but as it stands, no way. hopefully Cat develops and doesn't transfer.
3/30/2014 9:02:02 PM
i liked lewis. he worked well with TJW. but warren is gone.we need a PG who isn't afraid to take shots. believe it or not, many elite teams have a starting PG who can not only distribute the ball, but score.

i thought this was a solid lock mid-season, but i figured he'd stay after winning the starting job back, and was very pleased w/ how gottfried handled the situation.guess not

cat improved like fuck over this year. he was being too hot headed at the beginning and thinking he could both play the point and sink shots from anywhere in the field.the cat i saw in the ncaat and the one i saw in the regular season were VASTLY different. i think he's finally learned how to adapt to division 1 play which is why im VERY optimistic about next year and not caring that lewis decided to xfer.
3/31/2014 12:19:05 AM
He was interviewed in one of the games we won after as player of the game..they asked what got him finally playing so well....he said I am finally getting to play more than 20 minutes a game and am in rhythm. I knew it then.

In the end, he did us a favor. He didn't transfer after last year, which gave us more stability at the point this year instead of having to rely only on Cat. Him staying next year would only lead to more chemistry problems as there wouldn't be enough minutes to go around. There would have been 11 guys fighting for minutes, I think Gott prefers a solid 8/9 man rotation. I wish he could stick around and be a 4 yr guy contributing here and there, but it's hard to expect even a fringe McD AA to accept such a role in college basketball these days.PG: Barber/Lacey/LeeSG: Lacey/Lee/TurnerSF: Turner/Martinx2PF: Freeman/AbuC: Washington/Anya

Again, didn't Lacey transfer here with the specific understanding he would NOT be playing point? It's like the opposite of Purvis (who, ironically, won't play point next year).
3/31/2014 9:02:25 AM
I'm pretty bummed about the transfer, but the truth is Cat has the higher ceiling and if he can just improve his jump shot, then having him on the court more makes us a better team. We're going to need guys who can create shots with TJ not on the team next year...and Cat is much better than Tyler at that.Just a shitty situation. It would be awesome if their classes were reversed. I don't think Tyler would have minded sitting a couple years until Cat left. Then we would have had a veteran Lewis to lead a team with better scorers. Oh well.We really need Devonte Graham now. Hope App State releases him from his LOI.
3/31/2014 9:13:37 AM
^^He may play mostly off the ball. But he has experience at the point so unless you think Barber will play every minute of every game, he will be relied upon to be the backup.
3/31/2014 11:21:45 AM
Lacy will take on Dez's role from this year.
3/31/2014 11:27:58 AM
...so he's going to drive wildly into the paint basically every time he touches the ball?
3/31/2014 11:34:30 AM
Hey a lot of those wild drives led to pretty good shots. Give him an off season to improve and he might be a killer slasher next year.
3/31/2014 11:35:57 AM
Dez was an upgrade over Rodney, and Lacey will be an upgrade over Dez...
3/31/2014 11:40:35 AM
Purvis at 18 was better across the board than Lee at 22. Higher FG%, higher 3PT FG%, higher effective FG% (the first three weren't even close), lower turnover %, etc.Lacey is way, way better than both..[Edited on March 31, 2014 at 11:51 AM. Reason : Their assist, rebound and turnover rate statistics were similar. Obv Purvis has higher ceiling.]
3/31/2014 11:48:49 AM
3/31/2014 11:56:53 AM
Addition by subtraction is fine. I'd agree. But an "upgrade" would have to inherently be better. Only point. If Purvis stays, we don't get Lacey so it worked out great..
3/31/2014 12:06:15 PM
I don't feel like looking at the numbers again, but with just a handful of games left in the season i did a comparison between Lee's numbers and what Purvis had done the year before. They were all actually strikingly similar. They both averaged around 8.3 or so points per game. The difference there is consistency. Lee actually scored close to 8 points each game. Purvis would vary wildly in his contributions, scoring ~20 points, ~4 points, and ~0 points over a 3 game stretch to hit the same average. I think being able to rely on 8 points is generally better than not knowing if you're going to get 20 or 0 from a guy. The counterpoint is obviously that Purvis showed those flashes of potential that we hoped could end up with him scoring close to 20 points in a lot of games. He just didn't have the attitude or work ethic to get to that point.Regarding Tyler, I think we'll probably be fine without him. It sucks that he's leaving like this, but it seems like he had his mind made up that he wanted to transfer a good while ago. If that is in fact the case, I have to give him props for continuing to play hard and helping to lead the team to the NCAA tourney. I wish Tyler luck going forward.Regarding Purvis, I hope he gets to watch UConn win a title from afar and then they miss the dance next year and he flames out and transfers to a much smaller school a la Harrow. That is all.
3/31/2014 12:11:27 PM
The fuck you know bout purvis' work ethic
3/31/2014 12:15:59 PM
Purvis's workout videohttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gOYWubXaU1YI'll say it again, I bet he becomes a pretty good college player.
3/31/2014 12:18:36 PM
ugh, i really hate that he went to uconn

Lewis' list about what I expected..@jwgiglio: Possible transfer options for Tyler Lewis: Butler, Davidson, Vanderbilt, Dayton, UAB and Xavier
3/31/2014 12:21:09 PM
NC State fans have to put up with some amazing shit. I am so tired of this crap.
3/31/2014 12:22:19 PM
Maybe work ethic was a poor choice of words. He certainly put in time to get his body in shape and to work on individual skills that he valued. He clearly didn't put in much time at the free throw line, and there are numerous accounts about his willingness to buy into the team and be coachable. He was more interested in doing what he (or those that held influence over him) thought was best for Rodney Purvis rather than what is best for NC State. We'll see how he does following in the footsteps of Napier.
3/31/2014 12:23:54 PM
I'm so used to this crap.[Edited on March 31, 2014 at 12:24 PM. Reason : ^point taken]

I'll laugh if Lewis ends up on that shit Xavier team
3/31/2014 1:05:36 PM
LOL @ those who mentioned that Tyler would be a "reliable 4 year player for us."
3/31/2014 1:24:11 PM
Well that is what his skillset and ability translates to for our team. He is clearly not satisfied with that, so he's going elsewhere.
3/31/2014 1:30:04 PM
exactly, not sure why that's funny.
3/31/2014 2:29:34 PM
PG in college is more about who you can guard than what you can do offensively. Tyler is a good, not great, offensive player but is completely over-matched at this level on defense. We can't hide him at all, at least not against any team with a pair of ACC-caliber starting guards. He was always going to come off the bench if there was a better option available. Honestly, of all the transfers under Gott, this one makes the most sense for purely basketball reasons. With all that said, it still hurts, and his ball handling, basketball IQ, and highlight reels plays will be missed. If he would have accepted the backup roll, he could have become invaluable as experienced relief off the bench, especially while protecting a lead near the end of games.
