Is there a way to send MMS texts on the Defy that you guys know of that is reliable?
8/21/2014 5:11:09 PM
i didn't think the defy supported MMS
8/22/2014 9:12:07 AM
It doesn't. About the only option is to save the image somewhere and send a link.

I just Gmail pics. it takes like 2 extra seconds and everyone has gmail that would receive pics from me

That sucks a little, but it was capped at 100mb a month anyway before this and I've never had an issue. I hit ~49mb in July, but I know exactly how that happened. The only time this will affect me at all is when I spend a day or two at my folk's place in the Lake Gaston/Roanoke Rapids Lake area. That entire area is a cell service dead zone except for a few random spots here and there where Verizon works, so roaming is inevitable. I can live without a night or two of constant twitter/snapchat/etc updates every few months, so fuck it I'll stick with them.Still unlimited data on the Sprint network, so I don't get what the big fuss is about unless you live and work in a constant roaming area and don't have wifi. Lot of butthurt in the comments of that article about a 75mb drop in roaming data capability.

9/11/2014 9:20:30 AM
Main difference is that you could go over before and just be throttled. The 25MB will now be a HARD cap and once you hit that, you lose roaming data for anything other than RW use. The 25MB deal is only temporary so that'll be the case until they're smart enough to come up with a permanent solution. Most likely with base plans including no roaming data (essentially like any other MVNO) and premium priced plans with roaming data included. Also they're further reducing roaming speeds (which is already slow) from the beginning to discourage use.^ it's built into the latest RW app update. If you open the app, you should see something that says "My Data Usage". Then you can toggle the drop down on the left between Cell, wifi and roaming data. ]

^ ah...it's my wife's phone, so i'll have to look at it tonight
9/11/2014 9:24:43 AM
^3 I got an email talking about the change, and it had my roaming data usage from the last 3 months in a part called "how will this affect me" or some shit. I was under 1mb for the other 2 months they showed (June-August).[Edited on September 11, 2014 at 9:26 AM. Reason : foo]
9/11/2014 9:26:04 AM
I got the email and had used only a very small amount of roaming data. The only time it seems to ever use this is when I go on a long distance trip, but even then it is usually a very small amount of cell roaming data. For example I used 16MB of roaming in June. I spent a week in Las Vegas, so that is where it happened. Then in August I used 11.5MB, and in September I used 12.7MB so far. But all of that usage was when I went to the Virginia Creeper Trail over Labor Day weekend and camped out. So it does not look like this will really affect me much at all. Whatever helps keep costs down I am fine with.

Confirmed : Moto E for $99 in October
9/17/2014 1:16:32 PM
thinking about getting a second phone. Any reason I can't create a new account so i can get the $40 in referral money? Anybody been busted for this?
10/8/2014 3:22:51 PM
they might compare billing info (card and address)...never tried it, though
10/8/2014 3:37:58 PM
I've done this. My roommate and I pay the bill with my card. I referred him.
10/10/2014 1:11:01 PM
Are there any tethering apps that will work? I saw in the android thread this one was mentioned for other carriers. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.foxfi&hl=en Reviewers said it does not work with Republic.
10/26/2014 9:05:08 AM
Anybody else having trouble sending/receiving pictures? I have been unable to send/receive pictures with my wife (also on Republic) for the last few days. When I receive a picture, it notifies me but when I try to view the picture it says "media not found". When I try to send one to her, I get an error saying it can't send the message. I contacted Republic and they just forwarded me to the troubleshooting section of the website, which I had already visited and found to not fix the problem.
10/29/2014 3:41:22 PM
No issue on Moto X using default messaging app. Maybe try restarting?
10/29/2014 4:29:11 PM
I've tried restarting, updating the republic wireless app, and even deleting all the data/threads from messaging. Nothing is working. I can send/receive standard messages fine, but if I try to send a picture I get a "Couldn't send due to network problem" notification, and if I receive a picture it notifies me of the message, but the picture won't show up and it says "Media not found"I'm using the default messaging app and am on the Moto G (my wife is also on the default app and using Moto G, but no issues for her). Never had a problem during the first few months of service until just a couple days ago when it abruptly stopped working...
10/29/2014 4:47:57 PM
^that sucks. maybe try a different messenger app
10/29/2014 6:04:39 PM
is your storage space getting full? we had a problem with some messaging things when my wife's phone was full with pictures and videos.
10/29/2014 10:35:06 PM
I found a fix in one of the republic community threads. It was an authentication error, and dialing *#*#voip#*#* resets the credentials. That seems to have fixed the problem.
10/30/2014 5:47:40 AM
Not to ask a dumb question, but what do you you put in for the 'voip' part?I occasionally have this problem too.
10/31/2014 9:13:54 AM
8647. What it corresponds to on the dialer.
10/31/2014 11:13:15 AM
yea, that would make complete sense.
10/31/2014 4:50:52 PM
Republic twitter just hinted that they're getting the new 2nd Moto X soon.
11/26/2014 9:55:40 AM
https://republicwireless.com/info/phones/moto-x-2nd-gen/$399 for 16GB. Apparently available Dec 10th.]
11/26/2014 10:02:43 AM
$399 is a bit too much I think. In fact its about $150 too much.
11/26/2014 3:50:43 PM
son of a....planning on getting my little brother a moto E for critmas and the referral program ended
11/26/2014 4:01:14 PM
^^ are there better new, out-of-contract options?
12/3/2014 10:01:57 AM
I don't know. You look it up and tell me all about it.
12/3/2014 1:58:11 PM
oh, so what you meant to say is "$399 is actually a better deal than i can get anywhere else, all other things being equal"
12/4/2014 9:46:00 AM
Looks like they're giving $50 off to those who purchase tomorrow to beat Motorola's Cyber Monday deal which would bring it to $349(16GB)/$399(32GB) plus any motomaker customizations.

My wife and I have had Republic for about 8-9 months now, and although I love the concept in general, we have just been plagued with little issues. I'm trying to decide if I should keep fighting through it or just ditch them and go back to another carrier. I have had issues sporadically with messaging (mainly pictures) that I outlined earlier on this page. In order to keep this working I have to reset the phone at least every 2-3 weeks. Every time I contact Republic I go through the exact same channels and they have never fixed the problem, or even led me to believe they know what the problem is or are working on finding a fix. They seem content to let me keep using the work-around. My wife and I are both also having problems making/receiving calls now as well. About 50% of the time when we try to place a call, the phone is totally unresponsive. I will press the call button and it just doesn't do anything. Sometimes it will act like it's doing nothing, but then a minute or two later it will start dialing the number. I have even had it where I attempted to make the call and it failed, and then I got it to dial...but then a minute later the call is interrupted because the original attempt is now working. I have also had the issue on multiple occasions where when I call/text someone my number shows up as some random number that isn't mine. Does anybody else have these same issues? Are you all generally happy with Republic?
5/5/2015 3:12:45 PM
^i have had a moto G for about a year and the only issue is lots of random numbers call my sprint # a few times a week. they really need a way to stop calls/texts to the sprint # got an email with $50 off a phone promo code. if anyone wants it PM i guess.[Edited on May 5, 2015 at 3:38 PM. ^ On page 9 I addressed how you can help fix the unknown calls. Here's some info from the Republic Community. Since you cant reveive those texts from 5 digit numbers on your number, whoever must have had your underlying "Sprint number" before you must have signed up.https://community.republicwireless.com/people/carlh/blog/2013/11/20/moto-x-how-to-find-out-your-phones-sprint-numberI was getting tons of calls and texts from bill collectors for a Sheila. Since I've had my cell phone number for years, I knew it was coming in through the Sprint number. I ended up opening a help ticket for Republic to change my underlying sprint number, which they happily did and they calls/texts have stopped. And chipendave - I have had that exact same problem, and they havent resolved it yet. Started happening once the 4.4.4 update was pushed out, and only affects my phone when I have left wifi and am just on cell. I freed up some space and it helped a bit. Their advise was to close open apps and wait atleast 30 seconds after leaving wifi to make a call, and if it persist to restart my phone. So yea, they werent helpful.[Edited on May 5, 2015 at 4:06 PM. Reason : ]

Messaging locks up for me from time to time when I receive a picture message from someone. My only option is to delete the message without seeing the picture, otherwise I don't even get new message notifications for simple text messages when they come in (as long as the "broken" picture message is still there). I deal with it because I like the cheap phone bill and I don't get picture/video messages very often. The biggest issue I have is that I will receive a group text message from someone, but I'm unable to see messages sent by certain people in the group. It'll be a group of 5 or so including me, and I'll only see messages from 2 people even though the other 2 people are sending messages as well.So I can't group text or MMS without issues. I'm hanging on for the time being but the new Google thing is tempting, because I'm sure that they'll be able to resolve those kinds of issues instead of offering workarounds or shrugging their shoulders.

^I've been considering the new google plans, mainly for the free international texting and international data roaming, which Republic provides neither of (yes I know wifi is almost everywhere). And you can add a GSM card to the phone if you are in a country they dont provide coverage in. The big holdback for now would be the $600+ phone you have to buy. I'm sure they will be releasing new phones though, so we'll have to wait and see.I'm going to be in on the beta testing for Republics new pay-for-what-you-use data feature, so we'll see what they and google both do over the coming months.
5/7/2015 9:32:26 AM
^^ I just looked and it's $20+/month more than I'm paying with Republic, so I'd probably pass on that.Digging deeper into my group texting issue, it seems the issue is with Republic not supporting US Cellular MMS. I doubt that's on their radar to fix anytime soon, and I have a decent amount of friends in eastern NC where US Cellular is the best option for coverage. Not a definite or immediate deal breaker for me, just a continuous small pain in the ass that likely will never get fixed. I'll definitely be watching this GoogleFi thing to see how it goes.
5/7/2015 11:45:21 AM
if you are considering Google and use MMS, keep in mind that Google Voice still does not support group messaging. I know that's a different service, but you should double check Google
5/7/2015 12:18:54 PM
Nope, US Cellular is not currently supported for MMS (link https://community.republicwireless.com/docs/DOC-1928#jive_content_id_Unsupported_MMS_Providers)Oh, and their final response to me regarding the calling delay issue:
5/7/2015 1:12:31 PM
just ordered a moto x (2nd) to make the switch away from Verizonsince I work at home, Wifi is almost always available, so no reason to keep paying $100+/month
5/9/2015 10:52:51 AM
How is the coverage in the US? I don't mean in Raleigh or cities, I mean like in the mountains.Coverage maps are never true, so I'd be interested to hear someone who has traveled with one of these phones.
5/20/2015 7:43:45 PM
^works where sprint works
5/20/2015 7:59:50 PM
Great, Sprint doesn't pick up where I currently live.. hahaHowever in August I'll be back in Raleigh so maybe I'll switch then.
5/20/2015 8:15:21 PM
when you say "currently live" do you mean your house or your town?
