i have to say though, there is a difference between circumstantial evidence and speculation
7/8/2011 1:01:28 PM
The CSI effect is very interesting, in that it can work both ways. Expert witness testimony is given a shit ton of weight by juries, even though it is frequently wrong and many fields such as bite mark identification are thoroughly unscientific and largely discredited, but all the TV shows have expert witnesses and cool sciency testimony so they buy it. At the same time, a lack of smoking gun type forensic evidence can lead to acquittal since the general populace expects to see it because it's on all the TV shows, and if you don't have it then clearly the person didn't do it.
7/8/2011 1:11:23 PM
i know anecdotal evidence is BAD butttttt i know of two people in particular who think everything on CSI is real and they don't believe me when i tell them its not.
7/8/2011 1:13:06 PM
I'm not surprised. A shockingly large percentage of our populace can't name the first president or locate the state they live in on a fucking map.Juries are largely made up of people too stupid or too lazy to get out of jury duty. We shouldn't be surprised when they return with illogical results. In this case, I think they actually did a good job. The prosecution didn't do enough to actually show that Casey Anthony did it. She probably did, but without any evidence to back it up you can't convict.

7/8/2011 4:40:54 PM
Do you hate the media for making stories like that or do you hate the media for blowing up some deaths over others unfairly?
7/8/2011 6:07:19 PM
this thread is full on stupid, but did anyone mention the chewbacca defense they used?
7/8/2011 6:14:35 PM
Personally I think she did it but what is that based on, circumstantial evidence and gut feeling? If they didn't have enough evidence to convict then that is that, the prosecution should have done a better job. Unfair coverage is disappointing. I bet there are hundreds of cases that happen like this every year that no one ever hears about. However, don't blame the media and Nancy Grace (I can't stand her at all) for blowing up some stories over others. We have to blame ourselves. If we didn't watch that bullshit it wouldn't be put on the air. I'm sure they simply pick the story they think will give them the highest ratings for the longest time period. The story of a dead cute white girl is apparently more appealing to the masses than the story of a dead cute black girl. It's sad but that seems to be the state of our country. The media picks the story that sells the most. Don't blame the seller, blame the consumer.[Edited on July 8, 2011 at 6:30 PM. Reason : ^^]

so i had heard in passing that the prosecutions witness lied on the stand, the dude that claimed she made 84 searches for chloroform when it was actually only one and both he and the prosecution side knew it was a lie?what happened with that, did that get swept under the rug?yea she definitely should have been found guilty, the prosecution had such a strong case[Edited on July 21, 2011 at 2:56 PM. its crazy that nits barely mentioned, but its a prettty big flub being that was essentially the prosecution's entire case
7/21/2011 4:49:37 PM
Not to preach to the choir, but this is exactly where cases are headed when prosecutors can hide computer results (i.e. Cooper) and claim it's a threat to national security to divulge this information. I'm not saying she's an innocent person, but try the case with some integrity at least prosecutors. Huge difference between 1 hit on a website for uses of chloroform in the 1800s, and 84 visits to plan the murder of your child.
