and they said rickon was 6! isn't he supposed to be like 3 or 4?
4/26/2011 10:14:25 PM
they bumped the ages of all the kids up like 3 years, if i recall correctly
4/26/2011 10:37:25 PM
pdrankin: glad to hear it ^yes they did.
4/27/2011 8:41:43 AM
Can they end an episode without something terrible happening? Great show though (even though we definitely had to pause and look up Lannister family history at one point)I also totally ripped the intro song so I could listen to it at work[Edited on April 27, 2011 at 9:04 AM. Reason : .]

You must not have read the books. "Terrible things happening" is pretty much GRRM's mo. That and being a perv.
4/27/2011 9:26:16 AM
slightly OT, but according to his blog, he just finished book 5.I was certain that he'd miss the latest deadline, good for him to finish it. He better start the sixth tonight.

I bet if there's no football next season he gets his next book done in like 18 months
4/27/2011 5:57:29 PM
^ Fucking perfect. Thank you for making my day. His fantasy football obsession is like a heart of darkness that his readers can never escape...unless there is a lockout!
4/27/2011 6:42:33 PM
hmm, a season of football or book #6 in 2 years. hard choice.
4/27/2011 6:58:55 PM
with all that he needs to 'wrap up' in the (last) book 6, i bet its almost twice the size of the prior volumes...
4/27/2011 7:30:44 PM
Well there's supposed to be seven books. So two more, but then again it was originally supposed to be a trilogy. So who knows

And while I don't necessarily agree with Tycho on this point, it was hilarious:

As the OP of the thread, I should probably post something now that the show's finally airing, lol.Freaking loved the first two episodes, can't wait to see what the season brings! My reading list has quite the backlog at the moment, but I might have to start reading these books at some point. Its good to look forward to Sunday nights again!
4/28/2011 10:00:21 AM
Yeah, this has been an awesome way to end the weekend; I'll be bummed after Episode 10. I've been using Sunday as one of my big study days for my PE, so I study most of the day up until this show and it's a big reward to shut the book, grab a beer/make a drink, and watch this.
4/28/2011 10:05:24 AM
I've started reading the books. I should be caught up by the end of June.

syrio doesn't look quite like i expected...but he sounds/acts exactly as i expected![Edited on May 1, 2011 at 9:59 PM. Reason : except based on the swordplay, arya doesn't look to be left-handed?]
5/1/2011 9:57:50 PM
the actress is right-handed but they did the training both ways. Her trainer commended her on the effort to learn it both ways and from what I understood the final takes were a mix of both. I honestly forgot to pay attention to which hand she was using during that part of it though.PS: Tourney next week I guess...meaning the introduction of some awesome new characters. Also, both Littlefinger and Varys were cast great I think. Both characters are very interesting in the book but I do wonder if they will really get the screen-time to be as interesting in the show (simply due to time I think their roles will probably be downplayed some. At least Varys).
5/2/2011 8:29:40 AM
Episode was pretty slow.
5/2/2011 8:37:44 AM
I was kind of afraid some people would say that. That was a good episode for people who read the books (as you saw some cool characters 'in the flesh' for the first time) but I definitely thought it might feel a bit slow for newcomers. Either way I think the 2nd half of this season is going to be > the 1st half knowing all the stuff that is going to happen. So as I said early on, if people stick with it through the first 4-5 episode I think they will be rewarded well.
5/2/2011 8:46:24 AM
I am definitely sticking it out all season.
5/2/2011 9:08:26 AM
Yeah, if you thought last episode was slow, this must have been sleep-inducing. I still enjoyed it (though admittedly less than the previous ones).Except when Viserys was getting his ass handed to him. I could watch that for hours.
5/2/2011 9:44:36 AM
I guess the Dothrakis don't know how to pull out.
5/2/2011 10:33:35 AM
Yeah for some reason I expected Syrio to be thinner.I also expected him to be balding for some reason.
5/2/2011 3:36:08 PM
i enjoy his almost Tim Meadows-ish appearance
5/2/2011 3:41:25 PM
Well in the books he is completely bald I believe.
5/2/2011 3:41:42 PM
Aidan Gillen feels wildly out of place to me in this environment. I can only see him as a mayor or a faggot now.
5/2/2011 3:47:35 PM
I never watched any of his other shows, but he's perfect for Baelish.

So due to the tornadoes in Alabama last Wednesday I went without power in my house until this morning. The news said it would be a few days without power, so the first thing I did the next day was go and pick up a copy of the first book in the series. I'm about a third of the way through and I am quite pleased with how closely the show has stuck to the series and am now very pleased to get some more back story. I, too, would like to see some flashbacks though, the way the king is described in his youth sounds awesome. Two questions though, for those who have read:1) Does it explain later why Robert Baratheon is named king after the initial rebellion and not Ned or anyone else?2) There is a very very minor part in the book that was left out in this episode (probably because it's kinda weird/would be cheesy on screen), but the commander of Night's Watch had a raven that was talking. It only said a few words like "Corn" and "Sit" but the book made a point of it that the raven was speaking. Is this explained later?

Not really spoilers, but if you want to be extra safe and haven't read the books, might want to skip this post:

^ Also, to add to the answer to No. 1, according to the Wiki of Ice and Fire site, the Baratheon House was founded by Aegon's top general (and allegedly his bastard brother). http://awoiaf.westeros.org/index.php/House_BaratheonBeware on that site though. Definitely spoilers with no warning.
5/2/2011 5:06:50 PM
Yes, that site has a ton of spoilers since it is updated to the current books so I would avoid it if you haven't read.
5/2/2011 5:09:35 PM
Read the books. I can't say that the show is too interesting. It's just a replay of the books, and most of the time, I am underwhelmed by what I have seen so far. They also haven't really added anything to "punch up" what was in the books.None of the actors are particularly strong except for the dwarf. And so far, the actors and actresses are playing the parts the way countless others have played the same fantasy roles. There's no engaging portrayal such as Al Swearengen, any of a dozen Wire characters, Adama, Starbuck, etc.To me, the show has just been about checking off plot milestones from the book. Doesn't really have a soul.
5/2/2011 8:51:42 PM
I absolutely hated the midget character in Nip Tuck (Season 4?), but he's surprisingly really good as the dwarf in Game of Thrones.
5/2/2011 9:03:24 PM
^^ I haven't read the books and I like the show but I agree with that. Nobody outside of Tyrion is really all that interesting to me at this point
