Can someone tell me what the Diamondbacks are doing? (besides singlehandedly destroying the Mets season)Why would you ever trade for Ryan Church, Bobby Crosby and D.J. Carrasco? I don't care who you give up. Would it not make more sense to get a random A+ or AA low level prospect instead of three 30+ part-timers/relievers? Mindnumbing for a team with NO chance at the postseason.[Edited on July 31, 2010 at 1:17 PM. Reason : x]

what's the DH?
7/31/2010 1:54:02 PM
designated haterLilly and Theriot to the Dodgers for Blake Dewitt and two minor league pitchers. Nice deal for both teams. I like it from a Cubs' perspective as Dewitt is a bit better than Theriot (Dewitt also contracted through 2014) and they most likely will re-sign Lilly in the offseason. should I start Berkman tonight against Garza?I could start him over Cuddyer at my 1B slot or I could throw him in a utility slot and put Matt Kemp on the bench
7/31/2010 2:56:07 PM
Yankees acquire Kerry Wood.
7/31/2010 3:52:46 PM
Does that mean the fat hick has lost his 8th inning setup role for good this year? And what is up with these teams basically paying the Yankees for taking their players? Is saving $1.5M really worth it for the Indians here? Isn't Wood going to be at least a Type B? If so I'd rather take that compensation pick than whatever crap minor leaguer the Yankees will shit out.
7/31/2010 4:02:52 PM
ahaha Kruk just said he knew a Latin player in the minors who ate nothing but hot dogs for breakfast, lunch and dinner for an entire month because that was the only food he knew how to say in English

i glad Ozzie decided to run his mouth. he'd been out of the headlines for entirely too long....i was getting worried
8/2/2010 9:52:38 AM
I'm 99% of the time annoyed by Ozzie, but he's correct about the double standard.
8/2/2010 12:24:47 PM
not really...there are plenty of Spanish speaking people on every single MLB team...I don't think its that difficult to convey something to them when you have multiple bilingual people in every MLB dugout....thats simply not the case with Asian players
8/2/2010 1:39:05 PM
In addition to Tree's point that like half of every team is bilingual, most Asian players that come to the US are established veterans with gigantic contracts. A club is going to spend big money to provide all kinds of luxuries that a 19 year-old Cuban with a league minimum contract isn't going to get.

there are thousands of parking spots at the mall. why do the handicapped people need the good spots. there are a ton of people around who could help them in and out of their cars and help wheel them to the mall entrance
8/2/2010 1:59:50 PM
I don't get it, try again
8/2/2010 2:02:59 PM
it's a handicap. only certain people with the handicap are getting special help -- the azns. I think ozzie guillen is just saying, what's the big deal.. why can't teams spring for even one spanish-to-english translator. it'd probably go a long way.translators don't cost that much
8/2/2010 2:46:48 PM
All the Dominican and Rican players learn English in the instructional and winter leagues from 15 on. If they're not fluent by the time they get to the states, they're close. Vlad Guerrero is one of the only veteran players who still needs a translator, and thats just because he's stubborn.
8/2/2010 2:56:10 PM
If I take a trip to China, and nobody in the city I visit speaks English, I certainly will need a translator, or some type of translation aid. However if I took a trip to China, and half of the city I visited spoke fluent English, I wouldn't really need a translator
8/2/2010 3:05:13 PM
these minor league teams, especially A ball teams, operate in pretty podunk towns. I'm not sure half of kinston speaks spanishI don't really understand why some of y'all are being so defiant to what OG said. it's not costing you anything.[Edited on August 2, 2010 at 3:21 PM. Reason : .]
8/2/2010 3:19:02 PM
Half of Kinston doesn't even speak English very well.I'll preface this by saying I haven't seen what Ozzie said yet. That said, I imagine a good percentage of these teams have multiple bilingual players and coaches. Not saying it's not a problem in the cases where that isn't true of course. Also, wouldn't this be a team problem? Not a league-wide problem? Isn't it the teams who hire/pay the translators? Or is there some rule passed down by MLB outlawing any non-Asian translators...
8/2/2010 3:22:30 PM
minor leagues, yes, thats a different story...there are definitely more communication problems between spanish speaking and english speaking players and managersbut in the majors, its not really a problem
8/2/2010 3:48:16 PM
Teams can provide whatever services they want to the players they pay. Indeed it is a team "problem" (if you view it as such) that certain races get better treatment. I think it's true what Ernie said, that the azn players do tend to arrive more skilled and "better" than some 19 year old Cuban. However, even with that rationalization it doesn't help the perception that Latinos are being thrown into the United States with little support from the company in adapting to our culture.I think a few years ago David Wright and Billy Wagner were getting pissed that they were always the ones getting interviewed because they spoke English (this was when they were blowing their huge lead and collapsed) while Pedro and Delgado and Reyes were left alone.[Edited on August 2, 2010 at 3:57 PM. Reason : Thanks Slave, glad I'm on your radar.]
8/2/2010 3:51:10 PM
That was actually in 2008 and it was really just Wagner... it was more because Delgado would always leave early not that they wouldn't ask him questions. Delgado spoke better English than half of the white guys on that team. Beltran too. Then Delgado hit like 87 HRs in the second half and everyone forgot about it.Also, somewhat related, I just saw a twitter thing that said Delgado has a few major league offers, White Sox among them.[Edited on August 2, 2010 at 3:55 PM. Reason : minor-league offers, not major league... oops]
8/2/2010 3:53:10 PM
My bad.. I was thinking of 07 and Lo Duca.
8/2/2010 3:55:36 PM
Oh, yeah... I probably don't remember that because he was a huge douche and had consistent diarrhea of the mouth.
8/2/2010 3:56:29 PM
I like how Madman only users capitalization and punctuation in his big boy serious posts. And Tampa should sign Delgado...their DH for the last two games has been John Jano and Willy Aybar.
8/2/2010 3:56:37 PM
funny they have Jaso playing DH...and batting firstmore like designated on baser amirite

8/2/2010 4:01:58 PM
Takes a lot of specialized training to sit on the bench while the rest of your team plays the field.
8/2/2010 4:02:18 PM
A-ROD IS AT BAT i swear i've probably watched like 30 A-Rod at bats in the last week just because they show all of them

so Youkilis left the game early with a jammed finger...now Carlos Santana is down on the ground about to be taken off the fieldin a stretcherunlucky game for both teams
8/2/2010 9:30:07 PM
legs aren't supposed to bend that way!
8/2/2010 9:36:37 PM
thats a damn shame, Santana better be alright. I already hate the red sox more than any other team in baseball, if our #1 prospect has any sort of career threatening due to their team, my hatred will exceed to dangerous levels

8/3/2010 3:46:52 PM
That's sillyThe Royals beat the Yankees one out of three
8/3/2010 3:48:22 PM
The AL and NL West suck with the exception of the Texas Rangers.
8/3/2010 3:51:38 PM
The AL has the better hitters in their league, but the NL has the best starting pitching now. Halladay, Santana, Ubaldo, Lincecum, Hudson, Carpenter, Wainwright, Josh Johnson, Strasburg, etc. The AL cannot match that and that is why the NL won the All Star game. I'll still take dominating pitching over big bats any day of the week.
8/3/2010 3:55:18 PM
True, but the best two teams in the AL (NY and TB) have better 4 man starting rotations than any NL contender, which is why they'll probably win the World Series despite not getting home field[Edited on August 3, 2010 at 3:57 PM. Reason : Maybe SF is on par with them, but they have no offense whatsoever]

I'm a baseball fanatic and National League homer (no DH, more complex/tougher to manage), but it's hard to dispute the AL's dominance.

Woah the AL has more offense? Just like the last 30 years! Crazy!
