Mets beat the Pirates last night. 7-2. Pelfrey went 8 innings giving up 2 runs - 1 earned. He seems to be back on track. The loss for the Pirates ensured their 18th consecutive losing season. Ouch.

Its sad when beating the Pirates feels like a big triumph. But at least it looks like Wright is swinging loose again.

they need to completely dismantle this team, trade away Wright and Reyes for tons of triple-a talent and hope to be back in 2012-13they cant even say that next year will be better because they already called up all of their farm system talent in hopes that it would help this year (Ike Davis, et. al)but, I'm thinking that they will go out, spend a ton of money on some crap free agents in the offseason and continue to throw money down the drain
8/25/2010 10:11:30 AM
Carl Crawford would be perfect for this team and that ballparkUnfortunately, Beltran has one year left, and they won't pay three outfielders 15+ mil a season at the same time
8/25/2010 10:19:19 AM
^^ that is just awful. For fuck's sake, we aren't a 95 loss team. We'll finish a few games over .500 with $40M coming off the payroll after 2011 -- granted Wright, Reyes and Pelfrey will all be due raises.Reyes and Wright are 27! Next year will be the first year both will be in their typical prime years. You know how many division titles Rollins, Utley and Howard had by their 27th birthday? Zero. None. Not one.And the farm system is actually better than you think, though thinned out a bit with the graduations this year or Davis and Niese particularly -- the latter showing he can be a top of the rotation starter already with the addition of his plus cutter to complement his nasty hook. Thole has shown he can actually handle the C position, though I'm not a huge fan and our two consensus top prospects pre-2010 are having stellar years (Flores most notably) and one will be a starter either in 2011 or 2012 and has already proven he can get out major league hitters -- Jenrry Mejia. The issue is that we have a mongoloid manager and GM and a Silver Spooned moron as the COO. Jeff Wilpon wouldn't know baseball if one hit him in the face. We can easily be a competitive team in a season with some SOUND baseball decisions. Trading away young and prime-aged players with a history like Wright and Reyes is NOT a sound decision. Problem is that I don't trust the people in charge to make those correct decisions.Rant over.[Edited on August 25, 2010 at 10:32 AM. Reason : x]

So whats the ideal 2012 lineup and rotation at this point?SS ReyesCF Pagan3B Wright1B DavisLF BayRF Free Agent or Fernando MartinezC Thole2B FloresP SantanaP PelfreyP NeiseP MejiaP Holt/Allen/Free AgentCould be a contending team if Davis and Bay take major steps forward, and the young kids in the rotation keep improving
8/25/2010 10:38:49 AM
on paper, that looks like a competitive squad
8/25/2010 10:41:46 AM
Holt or Allen? LOL, you're in a dream world. Gonna go free agent for that last spot and frankly, it wouldn't surprise me to see them let Pelfrey walk in free agency.Flores, if his bat develops the way it's expected and he fills out the way he is expected to will be a corner OF. F-Mart is probably not gonna make it. Guy got hurt again and I'm starting to really lose faith in him as any type of relevant prospect despite his still young age.I agree with you that Crawford is ideal, but unfortunately another team in the area will be wanting to get some OF production too and he is coming to free agency one year too early.** Oh and I wanted to say also that I think our biggest problem this year is our depth. How many close games have we lost, especially on the road? A ton of them. To borrow a Chuck Amato line, "it was a season of inches." I wonder if having a competent bench like the Braves have would have made a huge difference? I mean we had Alex Cora OPSing .500 and Fernando Tatis grounding in to double plays half the year.[Edited on August 25, 2010 at 10:48 AM. Reason : harvey is a mid-2012 arrival likely but a lot of people see him as a closer]

No love for Dickey in the rotation next year? I think he deserves a shot. He and Johan and have been the most consistent starters this season.

Nieve isn't very good in large doses... also Jerry Manuel treated him like a rag doll and pitched him like 157 days in a row.Reyes out again with the oblique. Probably for the rest of the year if you ask me. I only have one request next year. Please, please, please non-tender Frenchy. Please. I'd rather see Nick Evans in my lineup than him.Anyone who thinks Wright should be gone is an imbecile and doesn't even deserve to be addressed.[Edited on August 27, 2010 at 4:05 PM. Reason : x]

Later Frenchy I don't care if we got a paraplegic back... he'd add more value to the team.

Santana's final numbers for 201011–9 in 29 starts, with a 2.98 ERA in 179 innings. Not bad at all...win total should be higher.I read that he should be throwing/catching by January but its obviously too early to tell for Opening Day 2011. Santana had surgery last year and in 08 (off season)...definitely raises questions, but I don't really think these things are related.
9/10/2010 6:22:05 PM
Mets beat Phils yesterday. Pelfrey pitched well. Ike Davis is tearing it up lately....yesterday, Ike Davis went 4 for 4 with three RBI, and he’s now hitting .264 with 18 home runs and 67 RBI.During September, he’s hitting .471 (16-34) with four doubles, three home runs and ten RBI in ten games.Davis is now only seven RBI away from tying Darryl Strawberry for the Mets rookie record.

9/14/2010 2:27:00 PM
Heard that Santana will miss the entire 2011 season with a torn capsule found during his shoulder surgery. NyM410 - can you confirm this? If true, then damn it sucks to be a Mets fan.
9/15/2010 7:25:18 AM
There was nothing unexpected in the surgery. They knew he had the torn capsule. Recovery is any time from 6 months to 2 years. Shoulder surgery is serious business and by far the worst thing a pitcher could have. The reality is that he likely will never ever be the same pitcher and there is a good chance he will never even be an effective mid-level pitcher anymore.Long contracts suck. Unless you're the Yankees and they come up smelling like roses somehow.** And yes, being a Mets fan is tiresome.[Edited on September 15, 2010 at 9:31 AM. Reason : x]

This means our fantastic management will deplete our entire farm system AGAIN to get a new ace.
9/15/2010 3:37:10 PM
http://www.nypost.com/p/sports/mets/amazin_shouldn_rule_out_trading_ZanWTrBcrQEfyno1Sr2otKJoel Sherman of the NY Post says the Mets shouldn't rule out the possibility of trading prospects/rookies (mentions Niese and Davis). Seriously, if the Mets trade Ike, I may have to just give up on this whole being a Mets fan thing. And, yes, being a Mets fan is quite rough...and being a State fan on top of that doesn't provide much relief during the off-season.
9/15/2010 5:56:05 PM
They better not touch Wright, Reyes, Davis, or Thole. There's so little home grown talent left, I don't want to lose any of them.
9/15/2010 6:23:52 PM
^ Definitely agree. I really like Niese as well. Would be a big blow if those guys got dealt. I look forward to seeing what we do with Dickey this off season...I'd love to have him back.
9/15/2010 7:01:48 PM
Thole I'd part with... guy is Jason Kendall at best.Niese, Mejia, Ike, Wright, Flores and Reyes are the only untouchables in the entire system right now for me.
9/15/2010 8:01:05 PM
And let Henry Blanco be the starting catcher? Are you kidding? Thole is no Piazza but at least he's on his way in instead of on his way out.
9/15/2010 8:33:16 PM
Awesome! Mejia left the game with a shoulder surgery and is having a MRI. This organization is hitting on all cylinders again!!!!^ it's all about what you can get back. I don't see him as anything but a backup long-term and if you can get something with him as part of a deal, you do it. We have enough young talent elsewhere who are still in their pre-arby/arby years that you could add $ at C relatively easily. It's not Thole or Blanco. It's Thole or "free agent X."*** Also, I just noticed we're back at .500. Not a big deal but with how putrid the offense is (24th or 25th in nearly every offensive category) it shows how good the pitching has been overall. Too bad 40% of our rotation next year is out with shoulder injuries. Yay Mets.[Edited on September 16, 2010 at 9:18 AM. Reason : x]
9/16/2010 9:14:54 AM
I don't think there will be many upgrades at C available...there are only a handful of better than mediocre catchers these days and I believe they are all locked up or there is at least no way the current team would let them go (Mauer, McCann, and Martinez are really the only ones who have really excelled this year imo). Thole, who will never be a power hitter, still hits for great average and is valuable at the bottom of the order.
9/16/2010 9:30:10 AM
4 game winning streak...look out!Has anyone ever made up a 12 game deficit in the last 15 games? oy.(On the bright side, this is the best September we have had since 2006, 9-5 so far. NO SEPTEMBER SLUMPS!!!!)[Edited on September 17, 2010 at 12:25 AM. Reason : -]
9/17/2010 12:23:34 AM
^No I don't think so...I think the year we collapsed (07 maybe...its all blur really) the Phils were 7 out with 17 games left and I believe that broke the record. As bad as we've been this year, it would be nice to finish the season above .500.
9/17/2010 10:29:24 AM
what was the deficit the year the rockies won like 20 of their last games in a row?
9/17/2010 2:59:30 PM

9/18/2010 12:17:23 PM
I meanSo has every manager you've ever hadBut this guy is going to be the best manager in the majors next season and he's willing to listen to the Mets
9/18/2010 12:19:10 PM
Yeah, I'm also pretty sure the Payson's were still the owners and not the good Payson's (Joan)... her daughter who hated baseball. NO ONE would win with that bitch owning a team...

9/21/2010 12:19:07 AM
I don't get it. It's still true. Philadelphia fans always hate the New York teams. Now that the Phillies are consistently good we hate them. See, it doesn't matter how bad a New York team is, there will still be haters and rivals. When a smaller market is irrelevant like the Mets are right now, there won't be any hate.[Edited on September 21, 2010 at 8:54 AM. Reason : but damn, sharp like a fox with the memory]
9/21/2010 8:53:51 AM
Like does anyone actually HATE the Marlins, even fans of other NL East teams? I only ever hated Preston Wilson for sucking it up as a met (and flat out being an embarrassment to his father) just to go to the Marlins and pound us every time we played them.I do hate the Nationals though as irrelevant as they have been since their move from Canada.
9/21/2010 10:02:34 AM
^Yep. Pretty indifferent towards the Marlins and their 16 fans.
