there are health benefits to drinking alcohol in moderation.

there are no health benefits to smoking cigs in any capacity.

yes, people consume alcohol in excess and it leads to negative impacts on others SOMETIMES. Smoking cigs around others AT ALL leads to negative impacts 100% of the time.

so, wtf are you talking about McD? I don't wish harm on anyone which is why this law is incredible.

Driving on 440 wrecks your lungs way worse than being around secondhand smoke occasionally. A study earlier cited that LIVING with a smoker increases your lung cancer chances by 20-30%, but that's from the base rate in the population which is fucking tiny. And that's living with a smoker, not just interacting with some occasionally while drinking.

Nobody denies it's probably bad to be around secondhand smoke, but it's not very bad in the context of going out, at least not compared to all of that booze you're about to swill down. In terms of social ills, secondhand smoke pales in comparison to alcohol.

that's the thing though, smoking being banned in restaurants is a way bigger deal to me than being banned in bars.

nothing worse than being about to NomNom on some delicious food (that I'm paying a premium for, btw) and have a smoke ring envelop my head. Fucking. Gross.

I've never been a smoker and I'd prefer not to smell cigarette smoke (cigars and pipe tobacco don't bother me). But there are no guarantees in life--no matter what you do.

100-year-old celebrates her birthday by smoking 170,000th cigarette
August 2007

Quote :
"An iron-lunged pensioner has celebrated her 100th birthday by lighting up her 170,000th cigerette from a candle on her birthday cake.

Winnie Langley started smoking only days after the First World War broke out in June 1914 when she was just seven-years-old - and has got through five a day ever since.

She has no intention of quitting, even after the nationwide ban forced tobacco-lovers outside.

Speaking at her 100th birthday party Winnie said: 'I have smoked ever since infant school and I have never thought about quitting.'"

I love freedom more than I dislike tobacco smoke.

Yeah god forbid when people drive to go consume a toxic substance that causes car crashes, typically through a highway that does massive damage to your lungs, that those people have to incur an immeasurably small amount of damage to their precious bodies

^^^^so say I walked or took public transpo to my favorite restaurant that doesn't even serve alcohol. Does that mean that I should still have to endure the secondhand smoke?

I don't like obnoxious hipsters, so I avoid places where they hang out. I do this instead of trying to force the bar owner to keep hipsters out.

for reals tho i agree. Its pretty fucking dumb to be on the one hand hurrr cigarettes are bad for u gonna stop dat!! and at the sametime still have them legal at all. The worst part is the people who cant comprehend why its so fucking stupid.

i mean u know me im all for personal choice and while i cant stand the smell of cigs, im not about to do some dumb gay babby law to get rid of them in one specific situation where i might be inconvenienced.

There are so many bad aspects to this issue

You have people that love nothing more than to look down on other people for completely arbitrary reasons. Selecting something you don't do to rag on is a great way to do this; it means you need no virtues or accomplishments whatsoever in order to look down on other people. Just something they engage in and enjoy that you don't ... bam, now you can tickle your superiority clit without an ounce of worth.

The best part about it is that the arguments that the militant anti-smokers advance could easily be used to ban their own precious habits, but they will use those arguments (along with any tactics necessary) just to ban the things they don't like. Fuck personal liberty, fuck private property rights -- I think smoking is icky!!

Well, I will actually be a patron of Cup o' Joes now that the smoking is gone.

I was tired of going in there for 30 minutes and leaving coated with smoke, having to shower and wash my clothes afterwards. I'm not kidding. It was a fucking HAZE in there. I'm sure it wasn't too good for my health either.

Some of us just elect to step outside and freeze our asses off to smoke.

I'll have to admit, it's nice to not have my clothes smelling like not only my cigarettes, but every other shithead's cigarettes.

Not so fond memories of going to the strip club and waking up the next morning to a pile of clothes on the floor reeking of stale beer, stripper funk, AND a dirty ashtray *HEAVE*

I, too, like to gloat like a fucking douchebag when I ram an unprincipled measure through state congress. Extra points if it needlessly and arbitrarily removes liberty from people different than me!

It won't affect me at bars since I quit smoking cigarettes 2 weeks ago, so fuck yourself.

right on. The only good thing to come out of smoking bans was probably owners realizing there was a market for non-smokers. I bet if you repealed some of these bans alot of places would stay non-smoking.

McDumbass's argument about alcohol is just dumb. No one is telling you that you can't get your tobacco fix. You are more than welcome to partake in dip, chew, snuff, hell you can make some tobacco brownies for all I care. None of these items produce second hand effects that affect those around you and put them in potential danger. However, if you want to set the tobacco on fire in order to consume it, you have two choices: march your ass outside or don't go to any of the bars or restaurants that fall under the smoking ban. It is so incredibly simple.

And believe me, the day that people decide that the best way to consume alcohol is to burn it with fire in such a way as to create an obnoxious cloud of carcinogenic smoke that permeates everything around them, then I will support banning it as well. But for now, it doesn't.

Maybe you should think of this more as a ban on fire. Would that make you feel better?

We already have a smoking ban here, have for a while. Always went outside to smoke. Going outside to smoke is not a big deal I did it all the time at peoples' houses. To me this is an issue of half-assed legality and half-assed private property rights.
