There were some (limited) trouble with porosity on the earliest M96 cases, as Porsche pushed lokasil construction through. As you can imagine these have been apparent and long since fixed/replaced by now, it's not like a piece of alloy is likely to become porous at 50k miles... It's hard to read much about them that's not written with an agenda to sell things, shame. As I've found some time to build my 3.6 911 motor, I have to say it's a very neat design.

Cool... thanks for clearing that up.

Anyone know the guy on Trailwood that picked up a silver 996.1 2-3 weeks ago? I started seeing it parked on the street every morning when I was leaving for work. On the 3rd or 4th day I noticed that he had rearended someone as the hood is now folded up nicely. That sure didn't take long...

The rear wing is cool but I don't like all the carbon or the aftermarket front bumper/sideskirts.

I may have mis-read. I thought it was a gt2 ruined by a body kit that makes it remotely affordable. I think it's just a riced out turbo to look like a gt2 that they want too much money for.

Would it be better to get a 996 911tt that has 35k miles or one that was driven more regularly?? Do they have any problems that stem from sitting too long (spray bore that gas deteriorates, seals that dry up and leak etc?)
4/30/2012 9:53:57 AM
you have to look at it like, with a 911 or any high end car, you're gonna spend the money either way...on the front end, for a better example with less miles, or on the back end, on a model with lots of miles and headaches and unknown maintenance issues35k doesn't really seem like it was sitting around too muchnow, something like 7k on the clock, no way i'd buy that to dailymileage is going to affect your resale the most and tires will really hit hard if you expect to drive the car. How long do you expect to own this car? (realistically, because I always say I'm never selling when I get something I really like, but I've been through at least 4 cars I really loved..)I take those into consideration the mostbut to answer your question, I'd consider one of these with ~40 - 70k on the clock35k would have to be a good deal[Edited on April 30, 2012 at 10:29 AM. ^^I think you would be fine, but to give a good answer we'd at least have to know the MY.

i've found a couple 01-03 models with mid 30s to mid forties milage and prices in the same ball park One is completely stock with full service record for 48 with the same mileage

Show me a mid 30k mile 996 turbo for mid $30ks (please).

...now teach me about them...am i better off buying a mustang? is it going to be like subaru maintenance? where something is always 2 50%How much does a new clutch cost?how hard is it to change intercoolers?
5/1/2012 12:22:50 AM
$39k isn't quite "mid $30k", but I didn't realize one could acquire a 45k mile 996 turbo for under $30k, so that is noted none the less. Hmm.
5/1/2012 12:41:00 AM
i reduce for negotiation
5/1/2012 12:42:48 AM
does the 996 turbo have the same engine issues as the NA 996's?
5/1/2012 12:43:18 AM
no... completely different casting from what i understand.
5/1/2012 12:45:04 AM
I've been waiting for these to come down, also..still not ready to buy one, but good to know they're out there when I'm ready
5/1/2012 12:46:50 AM
ditto...i'm trying to figure out maintenance on themi want to get one... do intercoolers and a chipand leave it like that... i'm sick of chasing the next weak link on my legacy..intercooler- turbo fuel clutch tranny halfshafts.
5/1/2012 12:50:11 AM
you post as if you'd be chasing the weak link in a 911 turbo. the weak link would be your skill behind the wheel (of a stock one) 400+ whp in stock trim weighing MAYBE 3000lbs with a rear engine?
5/1/2012 7:32:18 AM
the turbo is awd... it should be similar to my car is setup (i have big sways on stock springs with camber bolts in the rear. My car oversteers like hell on lift and plants and pulls on throttle. So, lift off, get it pointed in the right direction and then once you are facing where you want... mat it and it will take you there.I'm worried about the car breaking not me running it into something I will respect it till i know it. They don't drive anything alike, and don't under estimate a car that can actually put down 500hp, they're very confidence inspiring and subtle.
5/1/2012 9:04:55 AM
yeah... i mean i agree.. i haven't driven a 996 but the 3 seemed like it behaved in a familiar manner... but sharper and crisper and just felt like it knew what i wanted already. And i loved the visibility... and i mean the legacy isn't a dark hole but i just felt like i knew exactly where every tire was and like i could almost see each one of them. Sorry i'm not trying to make it sound like "PFFT it's just a porshe " there is a reason people fall in love with them... and i have... I mean for the money i'm looking to spend a boss 302 would be a smart move with a warranty and its brand new and all the technology (i'm talking blue tooth not solid axle) but there is just something about a 911 tt. The only car i've ever wanted more then a turbo porsche is the f40
5/1/2012 9:10:39 AM
911 turbo vs x50 whats the difference.
5/14/2012 11:13:09 AM
just PM Ahmet
5/14/2012 12:46:28 PM
You get about 25 more horses. Also it came with modified turbo, intake, ecu, exhaust, and transmission. I think the turbo adds more mid range torque.
5/14/2012 1:14:02 PM
There's actually quite a bit that's different. Bigger turbos (exhaust side mostly), bigger inter-coolers (same as GT2), different mapping, a bit more boost. The trans. difference has been rumored though I don't believe is accurate. A stock X50 does make a tad more power, though chipped they both get to almost 500hp. I'd be fine w/a non X50 car, they have less lag.Quick tidbit, since the 80s Porsche turbos are under rated from the factory and when full throttle is sustained for more than ~3 seconds, an overboost function is activated where the car's allowed to deliver more power for 12 seconds or so.

i wouldn't mind an 80s porsche with the slant nose conversion
5/23/2012 11:33:29 AM
I have a little dick, so I should get a porsche
5/24/2012 10:43:13 AM
i actually shit in urinals... so i should probably get one too.yes my heels are larger then the front of my foot.Seriously though... what a dumbass picture... especially now that most vws are FWD. [Edited on May 24, 2012 at 10:52 AM. Reason : .]

I've had the same 911 for the past year and other than briefly owning an e46 m3, haven't had another BMW in some time. Unfortunately BMW doesn't interest me anymore but boy they used to. Maybe someday again I'll look at them. They're lucky they still make RWD cars and most others don't, or BMW would lose all relevance...

Any purpose in buying a 99-02 boxer (non S) or is it too weak to really enjoy as a sporty car?

It's still fun just not as fun IMHO. They look weak though but they are convertibles so yet will always be fun
