lol. i hate door-to-door guys. I never trust that they are legit and if they actually prove it, I never trust their deals.

Just got hooked up. The dude was competent. The gateway/router is the size of an X-Box 360, has wireless and a 4-port switch built-in.[Edited on May 30, 2009 at 3:50 PM. Reason : image]

the 6.0 down 1.0 up. found out that the next tier up has 1.5 up, so i may upgrade to that.also, i was watching HD TV at the time. i tried it again with the set box off and got the exact same speed.[Edited on May 30, 2009 at 4:02 PM. Reason : also]

Ability to program my DVR from the web is neat. It's like DirecTV's, only they implemented it correctly. Unlike DirecTV, I don't have to hook an additional connection to the TV box in order to do it.Question: Is it stored on the local box? Do I have limited space?
5/30/2009 6:58:32 PM
is what stored on the box? your content? yeah, there's a hard drive in your main box.
5/30/2009 7:39:38 PM
Is the list of programs scheduled to be recorded kept on the box, in the gateway, or on their servers? That is, if I disconnect my gateway and login to AT&T from elsewhere, can I program what things are scheduled to be recorded?

Is anyone else having a hard time watching HD channels without crazy freezing?! In the last two weeks it has gotten absolutely ridiculous, to the point that I can't watch an hour-long program on an HD channel without several instances of freezing.Should we call AT&T and complain!? Or has someone else already complained about it and gotten a response?
5/31/2009 6:27:55 PM
^yes. I called and the tech said our box was on the wrong timezone. she changed it and the freezing stopped, for the most part. I see it freeze maybe every few hours now and am planning to call back soon.definitely call and talk to tech support. don't let AT&T turn into TWC.
5/31/2009 7:07:08 PM
^^, ^i'm seriously almost about to just throw the damn box out the windowit's so maddening i guess i shouldn't really complain too much though, this is the first real problem i've ever had with them, compared to the 2395203958 i had with TWC... guess it's time to call.
5/31/2009 7:12:55 PM
Overburdened network?
5/31/2009 8:35:32 PM
glad we aren't the only ones with problems! i'll make sure he calls about it tomorrow.and no, we aren't overburdening our network.

So... since the gateway doubles as a router & switch, I was trying to set it up so my httpd server was accessible from the outside. Setup the port forwarding through the firewall just fine, and indeed everything works for the rest of the internet. All of you should be able to get to shatner.philihp.com.However I can't. From what I gather, the gateway doesn't support loopback (or something along those lines). So when I resolve shatner.philihp.com, it resolves to my WAN IP, then I try to connect to it and I timeout. However if I connect to the LAN IP, http://192.168.1.99, it works just fine. It's similar to the problem this guy had with his FTP server.Shaggy suggested that if I could get the DNS on the gateway to resolve the domain differently for LAN users, it would work. And it looks like from the manual, that there used to be a quazi-secret management console that had a "DNS Resolve" page for doing just this. However a recent firmware upgrade totally removed this in order to fix some XSS attack. So that's out of the picture.this guy got around it by setting up a router behind his gateway... I suppose I could do this, but it seems like overkill for something that should just work.Right now, my solution (which doesn't really scale) is just to add in a line to my /etc/hosts file for all of my machines to make the domain resolve to the LAN IP of the HTTP server, rather than the WAN IP.
5/31/2009 9:08:51 PM
Can you disable the wireless on the gateway box and just run your current wireless router behind the gateway? I really don't want to try to reconfigure all of my static IP assignments and port forwarding settings in the new gateway. Can you even assign static IPs with the gateway?UVerse is not in my neighborhood yet, but when they are I would like to switch to their internet service to get rid of TWC once and for all.
6/1/2009 8:09:22 AM
^^strange. i just tried it as well on my end, and it resolves to my WAN IP.have you looked at this? or is this the quasi-secret management console you were referring to? i haven't found another way to change the DNS that DHCP hands out on the router itself - i think your hosts file solution is as elegant as you're going to get without setting up another dnsmasq server or something. i do love that MDC page, though, especially for the diagnostic info and the resets you can do (like forcing it to retrain on your line). there's also another page that basically dumps EVERYTHING in the gateway's config files and logs into a JSON-like format - i can't remember where it is right now, but i can see many potential uses for it.^ (and somewhat ^^):yes, you can disable the wireless. you can even stick your current router in the 2wire's DMZ so it basically just acts as a modem.there are a few problems with this, however:1) if your current router doesn't support passing multicast from the WAN interface, your STBs won't work (or, at the very least, they won't work consistently)2) i'd be willing to say that all consumer routers (well, technically speaking, gateways) out there right now simply can't handle the traffic it takes to push iptv and do internet duties as well. the 2wire gateway has some sort of special firmware (or maybe an ASIC) that offloads the iptv stuff, apparently. i tried doing this with a damn linksys WRT600N that has a pretty beefy processor in it, and i still got dropped frames and pixellation all over the place on the STBs.so, yeah. if you want to do this, you'd be wise to run two networks - one from the 2wire gateway that feeds your wireless router and your STBs, and another that feeds your computers from your wireless router.the way i have it set up right now, my WRT600N just acts as a dumb access point. i use it for wireless instead of the 2wire gateway because it has 802.11n and will take external antennas without me cracking it open. all of the wireless clients get their DHCP leases from the 2wire gateway.i don't understand what you're talking about when you say you're assigning static IPs in the router - are you talking about DHCP reservations? if so, i don't think there's a way to do that in the gateway, but you really have no need for them - the port forwarding settings on the 2wire gateway are tied to the MAC, not the IP. also, it's a whole lot easier to just use hostnames instead of IPs - i haven't found a way to change the domain name that dnsmasq uses for DHCP leases (i like using e00.lan, for instance), but all of your machines will receive (hostname).gateway.2wire.net as their hostname when they get a DHCP lease.]
6/1/2009 9:43:13 AM
^Good to know. I currently assign static IPs to each MAC address at home. Then I use that IP to run machines remotely within the network. It may not be the most efficient, but once I got it to work, I just kept doing it. It sounds like host names would work just as well with UVerse.

anyone had directTV and switched to uverse?I like my directTV service but the DVR menu is pathetically slow and sluggish. Also I think my contract runs out soon.
6/10/2009 8:45:32 AM
So apparently AT&T U-Verse is available to me in Garner. There were some guys out there trying to get people to order. I caved in and orderd the U200 or whatever it's called with the internet service. Canceled it the next day when I did some research and found out all their stuff is IPTV and won't work with any of my QAM tuners. I really don't want a set top box or a DVR from the providers.
6/10/2009 8:53:34 AM
^^^ where off Kaplan? I saw the VRAD box down at the corner of Gorman and Avent Ferry, is there another one somewhere around here? I am over on Lorimer and just checked my address at AT&T's site and was told it's still not available.

Theres boxes all up and down Kaplan.

forgive me if this has been asked and answered already, but I don't feel like going back through this thread...Is AT&T offering just internet service? I def. do not want home phone service and I am pretty happy with my DTV package, but I would LOVE to get rid of RoadRunner. Is anyone doing this? If so, what are you paying?
6/10/2009 4:16:31 PM
Yes they do. Go to the website and price it out. IIRC, it was ~$35 for their slowest service.
6/10/2009 5:50:05 PM
When I canceled my order last week, I told them I'd still be interested in getting their internet service. I was told that you can't just get internet without a cable package.

wooooooooooot! The place I'm moving into in August has U-Verse available! Finally. Cable is a bit more than what I was expecting, but we're not going to get that anyways. This is the first time since I moved to NC that I won't have to deal with TWC.

Got my U-verse hooked up this morning (near Gorman and Kaplan). Works awesome so far. As soon as the tech left, I called Time Warner to cancel. The guy just kept on offering me deals to stay. He offered to give me a matching rate for the U200 package I got from U-verse, plus $200 just to stay with TWC. I still said no. AT&T gave me $250 to switch
6/18/2009 1:33:40 PM
I called to cancel my Uverse TV. I had U200. Really dont watch it much. Was going to go back to the $15 package from TWC. ATT gave me Ufam for$29/mo for 6mo and free hd for a yr. Not too bad, I get all the channels I would have watched anyway except sundance.

I am considering At&T U-VERSE over TWC and roadrunner. Do I really need a box for every TV in the house. With Time warner you can still plug any TV in to the wall and get the regular channels (0-7X) , just not the digital cable channels. Am I missing something here? Maybe I do not understand how this works. I really don't want to have to pay extra for a box just to be able to watch tv in the bedroom.
6/19/2009 3:25:37 PM
Yes, you have to have a box for every single TV connection. There is no "standard cable" type feature.
6/19/2009 5:15:31 PM
^^yes, you do. u-verse doesn't work like traditional cable... it's all IPTV.also:http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=312886438&mt=8ZOMG IPHONE REMOTE SCHEDULING APP YAYandhttp://www.att.com/gen/press-room?pid=4800&cdvn=news&newsarticleid=26864
