a couple = 5

also, the amount the lake has gone up since Saturday is the same amount it rose in the 17 days from feb 16 to march 3. i'm ok with that.

For those who know something about falls lake and river basins

Why is it that of the last three rains that we had the percipation amounts were close to the same but the first two moved the lake level by multiple feet but the last by only a few inches?

Is this because Falls Lake is sloped and we have reached the point where the volume goes up much more dramatically for each inch or does it have something to do with absorbation of water in the soil rather than drainnig to the lake?

the last rain that moved it a few feet was more widespread from what i heard, where as the last few have not been falling in the right areas

i'd guess the one big one had a lot more run off than the last few smaller ones

it mostly depends on where the rain falls. Most of the rain we get in raleigh actually does not go to falls lake. The drainage area for falls lake is northwestern of the city for the most part. (towards durham, etc.)
The rain has to fall in the drainage area (watershed, basin, whatever you want to call it) for it to affect falls lake.

i would think we would want rain in like the south eastern or just the eastern part in general of wake county in general...falls lake gets filled from the neuse river watershed i thought?

which is northwest of the city and the county

rain here near campus ends up in the Neuse, but downstream of falls lake

toward falls lake it looks like...which would make me think we want rain to fall on the eastern and southern part so that it goes into the stream and then the stream empties into the lake

Falls lake was created by a dam being built on the Neuse River north of the City of Raleigh

water that falls here near campus ends up flowing through various creeks until they reach the Neuse, usually via Crabtree Creek

but all of that reaches the river downstream of the dam

the neuse flows east-southeast from the triangle through towns such as Clayton, Smithfield, Goldsboro, Kinston, and New Bern where it meets the Trent River and finally empties into the Pamlico Sound at Oriental NC (Hwy 70 follows the river to the coast)

they are saying we have enough right now to get to mid Jan 09 if consumption were to stay the same. Although idk if that figure is calculated with the current flow out of the dam or with what the normal flow that should be restored soonish.

This is a PM I sent yesterday but felt like it was applicable to this thread:

I'm building a few new houses and we're striving to make them as green and energy efficient as possible. In that light I've been taking a long look at dual flush toilets. Basically it lets you choose between a 0.8 gal flush and a 1.6 gal flush depending on what you're flushing. New toilets generally run above $200, but I've found a number of retrofit kits in the ~$30 range. I haven't tried them personally but they seem to get good reviews across the board. A friend installed them in an apartment complex that he manages and it has reduced his bills substantially.

Wow Falls Lake is fairly warm. Is it the cooling pond for a nuclear plant or something?

I wonder if they allow scuba diving there...hm......

^^^I would imagine it is just because it is pretty shallow. And it is a Sand bottom lake that tends to stay pretty stirred up . . . so there would be pretty low viz.

Quote :
"Homeowners Association to Roll Away Rain Barrels

Raleigh, N.C. — Rain barrels were put to good use across the Triangle during Sunday's rainfall. But some residents of a Wake County neighborhood say their water conservation efforts are being hampered by their homeowners association’s image concerns.

To do his part to conserve water, Wakefield Plantation resident Michael Dadian installed eight rain barrels on his property in February.

“We have four children and when they come home from school, they ask us questions like, 'Dad, what else can we do?'” he said.

Dadian heard Friday that most of his rain barrels would have to go. The Wakefield Plantation Homeowners Association decided having too many rain barrels didn't fit the neighborhood's image.

“To maintain the visual impression, especially from the street, for our community,” Greg Barley, with the Wakefield Plantation Homeowners Association, said of the reason behind the rain barrel limit.

Wakefield Plantation is only allowing homeowners to have two rain barrels per home. They also have to be a particular color and kept in certain spots on the property.

“To choose to enforce this rule, it just seems contrary to what the governor's asking us to do,” Dadian said.

In December, Gov. Mike Easley said it was everyone's "patriotic duty" to conserve water in the face of the worst drought in North Carolina history.

Dadian said he questions why the homeowners association made such a decision in the midst of the drought.

“We're trying to do our part here by conserving water and this is just one small step towards that,” Dadian said.

“We want to encourage people to go ahead and use them (rain barrels) where they see fit. It's just like most additions, we like to have them usually out of view,” Barley said.

The homeowners association said there is an appeal process and it is possible some houses will be allowed more than two barrels.

Dadian said he plans on making that appeal.

Thanks to recent rains and strict water-conservation measures, available drinking water in Falls Lake, which is Raleigh's primary reservoir, should last through Jan. 12, 2009, officials said.

Since Raleigh imposed Stage 2 restrictions on municipal water system customers on Feb. 15, daily water use has fallen about 5 percent, to 38.2 million gallons."

i don't want to live in a neighborhood where people have ugly barrels all over the place. there is no reason to have that many rain barrels. HOA's rightfully keep the property values from dropping because some asshole detracts from the look of the area.

I have 4 rain barrels, and they all are not visible from the street. The two in the front yard you'll only notice once you start looking for them (follow the downspouts). You can have rain barrels and have them hidden out of plain sight really easily. There is no reason for a HOA to say more than two rain barrels are too many.

Yeah, HOA's are pretty shitty in a lot of areas. I won't be moving into an area that has one.

A nice passive-aggressive way to go and control your neighbors so you all have the least exciting, most nauseatingly bland homes on the planet.

I fully plan on not being able to see my neighbors. Ideally they'll be about 20 acres away on any side.

Please explain how some group of people has the right to tell me what to do on my own property, just because they live in my neighborhood? Screw HOA's.

you people complain about them, but what if one of your neighbors starts "collecting" cars in his front yard...
or starts "decorating" with christmas lights year round...

that will bring down your property value SIGNIFICANTLY and ruin your investment.

Agreed. I'm fine with having to get permission to paint my house if it prevents some other guy from painting his bright orange.
