treadmill at the gym and indoor bike trainer when I don't want to run (at my house)I will not run when it is cold like this. and windy too. I have the clothes to do it but F that
1/4/2010 8:13:48 AM
I wear layers up top (maybe a compression t-shirt and a long sleeve) and gloves and a headband that covers my ears, but unless it gets in the teens or below, I just wear shorts. Usually only takes me about 10 minutes to warm up and after that, my legs are fine.I have a pair of tights, but it rarely gets cold enough around here for me to break them out. For any guys wanting a cheap pair of running tights, check Target. $20 and they are pretty decent. They have lasted me 2 and a half winters so far.

one plus to running on outdoor trails in this weather:plenty of parking. i shudder to think what the gym is gonna look like today.i just wear long athletic pants, a long sleeve but thin polyester shirt with a t-shirt over it, a hat and thin gloves. yeah it starts out cold but if you're burning calories at any appreciable rate you warm up. i ran at the lake the last two days and by the end the cold was refreshing. running across the dam was rough though, not gonna lie. the wind was blowing across the lake and the snot was freezing horizontally across my face.[Edited on January 4, 2010 at 9:50 AM. any tips for getting my out of shape sister in running condition for the KKC in a month? she can do about a 1/2 mile at a 10min pace atm, i'd like to get her in the 2 mile 20min range by race day...and let her walk back

abbreviated version of http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_3/181.shtmlcould probably skip the first few weeks to get to a 20 min sustained

i might have asked this before but has anyone worked with the LLS team in training before to train for a marathon/half marathon?seriously considering doing it for the san diego rock n roll 1/2 marathon in june. the only way i will be motivated to run is if it is for a cause
1/6/2010 7:45:12 PM
i'm pretty sure the san diego rock n roll is only a full marathoni've had several friends run/train with team-in-training though, and they all seemed pleased with the experience
1/6/2010 10:17:32 PM
oh yea it does look like it is only a marathon or a relay. hmmm. i will have to recheck the info i just got from LLS. i just want to do a 1/2 def not a full!!
1/7/2010 2:34:01 AM
any suggestions of lighted places to run in the north raleigh area?when i get off work it's dark outside. i occasionally run on the sidewalk on lynn road, but being blinded by headlights is quite annoying.

1/7/2010 10:12:31 AM
just incase anyone besides me was interested the san diego rock n roll marathon has a 1/2 marathon option this year. i didn't see it on the website but the stuff i got from LLS in the mail says "a new course, a full or half marathon option, and a new official charity..." (charity is obviously the leukemia and lymphoma society) if you choose to train with LLS you fundraise and then you get your entry fee paid for and some pre and post marathon weekend activities plus lodging so your BIG cost is obvi airfarei think i'm going to do it. the 1/2 not the full!! i am scurred though.

^ Let us know how that book is, I've been wondering about it I ran the lake on Sunday, and it wasn't too bad other than at the dam (agreeing with TallyHo, that wind kills). Athletic pants, a tight long-sleeve shirt, ear band, and my Vibram Sprints (not bad at all); it was fine but I really needed gloves. It's not too bad, and I was out at 4pm. But my problem is breathing--I feel like I can't run and breathe that cold cold air. Any way to combat that feeling? Now I just need to work on getting out more often, and increasing my speed and distance.
1/7/2010 11:21:49 PM
The only thing that will help breathing in cold weather is to just do more of it. Eventually, you will adapt. If you still can't beat it, try putting something over your face to warm the air like a face mask.

Anyone else running the Disney marathon on Sunday?
1/8/2010 12:21:38 PM
http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/08/11/phys-ed-can-running-actually-help-your-knees/That's good to know. My mom's always concerned about her knees while running as am I. Atleast long term effects. Also i'm really loving this app: http://www.abvio.com/runmeter/Really works well. You can compete against yourself because it shows where you were on your route the last time you ran so you can try to beat it it real time.[Edited on January 20, 2010 at 1:16 PM. Reason : .]

Strong muscles help build bone density.

oh man i'd love to do one of the disney races!
1/20/2010 2:10:35 PM
^^^I would think that would make your running much more complicated than it needs to be. I definitely understand wanting to keep track of your metrics, but don't think I would actively look for my stats while i'm running.

So I started running last week. I ran in HS, took Run conditioning Freshman year, and finished the KKC 2 years ago.I'm preparing for the kkc again and I weigh about 20-30 lbs more than I did 2 years ago. My calves and shins have stopped aching while running and now I can run/walk 2 miles easily. I am using the other equipment in the gym and pretty much just do 50 lb reps until I can't lift anymore, then move on (to build lean muscle, i think?). I can use the stair master thingy for 1 hour on 50% resistance. If I want to be able to run 2 miles in 20 minutes by the 6th, where should I go from here?
1/20/2010 3:06:12 PM
you've done all that and you're asking tww?sry. LOLz
1/20/2010 3:11:57 PM
I figured people here would have a better idea of how to run while being overweight.
1/20/2010 3:42:34 PM
Honestly - keep the running up and throw in some spin or something. Spin is great because it's no impact and you can still get your heart pumping pretty quickly. Weights are good - you should look online and download a program/routine rather than just do 50 reps of random stuff.

1/23/2010 12:13:29 PM
is it even possible for a middle schooler to run sub 2:34 marathon? or healthy?
1/23/2010 12:26:05 PM
So I was able to finally run 2 miles without stopping. Towards the end of it, my fingers, toes, and then nose went numb and "fell asleep." Is there any permanent damage I can do to my body by getting to that limit?
1/24/2010 12:40:26 PM
Do you have any pre-existing conditions? Many people push their bodies without permanent damage. Your body is pretty resilient, if you don't get the sensation back within a half hour I would worry about it.
1/24/2010 12:58:44 PM
Word.
1/24/2010 4:01:05 PM
I've only run in them 3 times so far, but the Vibram KSO has left me without knee pain after running for the first time in probably 10 years, all three runs. And my calves are sore like a bitch
1/25/2010 7:41:51 AM
i'm officially doing team in training for the rock n roll 1/2 marathon (new this year) in san diego.i'm very scurred. i'm super out of shape. i start jan 30th!
1/26/2010 8:39:31 AM
I've heard nothing but good things about TnT and the rock and roll marathons. San Diego is awesome too. I'm jealous.
1/26/2010 8:55:00 AM
I loved the Country Music Marathon and Va Beach Rock n Roll Half ... that group does a great job with organization in general. I hear the San Diego race is no different. My bff ran it and had a very fast time. It's a fairly flat, fast course. And San Diego is such a fun city for a full weekend of festivities. Good luck!
1/26/2010 9:30:14 AM
Doing the Arizona Rock n Roll Marathon and the Va Beach Rock n Roll half this year. Any one done either of those? I've heard the Va Beach was fun and flat but crowded.
1/26/2010 10:31:20 AM
i am not a runner, but dammit, i try
1/26/2010 12:59:58 PM
Va Beach is a fun half-marathon. Definitely a party mentality for most runners there. Running the military base is dull, and the last 3 miles of boardwalk can be a little rough on the shins (very hard surface), but it's flat and fast. Since it's September, it's still a hot time for a half-marathon, but it really doesn't matter because it's such a fun race. Just drink plenty of water/gatorade because you will sweat a LOT.
1/26/2010 1:47:29 PM
the san diego one is in june so i have a LOT of time to prepare. and to whine in here for support i'm so not a runner. i'm a swimmer. its so weird that a lot of swimmers and runners have a hard time "crossing over" into each others sports. all my runner friends that have started doing triathlon training complain about swimming and i'm like, hello you can run 26 miles you can definitely swim 2! but i have the opposite problem. i think it is largely mental.
1/26/2010 4:17:18 PM
It's not really mental, it's more that the type of exercises are completely different and it takes conditioning to develop each of them. I despised swimming at first, could only go one length of the pool before being winded. Now that I understand the mechanics of swimming better and what works for me, it's much easier.
