^ Yeah. They're nice-sounding, sort-of-bland tube amps. Very pedal-friendly, though.P-90s.Hyphens.

I barely play guitar anymore with having a baby that needs to sleep a lot and a wife who studies a lot. I need something that'll let me play in the house without disturbing anyone. anyone have one of these?http://line6.com/pocketpod/
5/6/2008 4:35:54 PM
I've been using a GNX4 and some Grado headphonesalthough that's not quite as affordable as that option(No, I haven't used it )
5/6/2008 5:05:23 PM
my brother has had one forever. was awesome back kn the day.I'm about to get a Johnson J-station because Jarzombek used it alone to record Blotted Science, and its something semi cheap that can get me the sound that i'll want to have when recording my next batch of songs.
5/6/2008 5:07:38 PM
i got a behringer v-amp it works well
5/6/2008 9:59:04 PM
looking back at the last page, i'd never heard of atomic beforeit's an interesting concept, but i'd think that having either EL84s or 6L6s in the power section would really color the sound
5/7/2008 4:08:09 PM
I hardly ever use it because I'm barely ever in a situation where I can crank it up enough for it to really be useful... I play through headphones probably 98% of the timeI have to say though that between these new Grado SR60 headphones and my callus's finally coming back from my few months break from playing I'm happy with how I sound now and am not gonna look at buying a new guitar for a bit anyways...The coloring of the sound is minimal.. it really does do a great job at what it's suppose to do--which is of course letting the GNX4 or whatever else you're using do all the work and it just produce sound exactly like the GNX4 wants it to
5/7/2008 5:58:10 PM
I'd be very interested to hear what the 6L6 and EL84 versions sound like when cranked. Are they not power-limited to keep from distorting naturally? Especially in the case of the EL84s, that's all the tone difference in the world.
5/7/2008 6:23:39 PM
went to guitar center tonight.. had a gibson SG with P90's that was f'ing awesome sounding/feeling..
5/8/2008 8:28:15 PM
It was this guitar:http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Gibson-SG-Classic-Electric-Guitar-with-P90-Pickups?sku=517127&src=3WFRWXX&ZYXSEM=0&CAWELAID=26043478on sale for $799 I believe it was... fucking awesome sound and felt good too. the neck was a little dry/rough feeling.. a little "guitar honey" and it would have been one of the bests i've ever played
5/9/2008 9:02:01 AM
If we're talking about the Raleigh GC, I know exactly which one you're talking about...they have two SG Classics and one is an absolute dream to play and sounds ballsy as fuck. It has the reconfigured neck joint, too, so you don't have to worry about it snapping off. They're still annoyingly neck-heavy, though, so if you let go while it's strapped on the headstock will take a nosedive.
5/9/2008 12:17:44 PM
it was in greensboro but i think its the same model or at least really close.. def neck heavy.. gotta hold off from buying right now but damn i want it
5/11/2008 5:20:04 PM
I have that SG classic with the P-90's....its stinking awesome. I also have one of those faded SG's with the 490's. I go back and forth between which is better but the truth they sound alot different.
5/11/2008 5:25:37 PM
P-90s = good.Humbuckers = bad.
5/11/2008 6:51:39 PM
yeah i had never really played anything with P90's until that one and I have to say I was impressed
5/11/2008 6:55:18 PM
I know it's my obligatory comment in this thread and all, but they really do make standard single coils sound wimpy and make humbuckers sound flat and lifeless.
5/11/2008 6:58:27 PM
depends on what youre doing. I cant use P90s for my band really If I like my splawn cabinet as much as I think I will live, then Ill definitely be selling my peavey cabinet and im probably going to pick up a custom guitar. The mahogany body is going to be modeled after an SG w/ bolt on mahogany neck with rosewood fingerboard. But the neck is going to have the ibanez wizard profile because I am so used to the prestige necks (which are ridiculously thin compared to most other necks). Its going to have 2 P-90s and probably the tune-o-matic bridge. Havent decided what kind of headstock I want yet.
5/12/2008 12:43:20 AM
Is it wrong that I like the Danelectro Innuendo I bought for $100 more than I like my Reverend? The Reverend is a nicer guitar, has a beautiful finish, plays better, and has a fuller sound, but there's something about the grit of the Dano that I like more (and it's not the pickups, because this one has boring Strat pickups instead of the heavenly lipstick tubes).*sigh*
5/28/2008 1:28:10 PM
definitely not. id take my show-retired '83 roadstar with a terrible bridge and neck over a lot of other really nice guitars just because I played it so long I got extremely comfortable with it and it had a unique tone, even if it wasnt quite the tone I was going for.A question of my own, is anyone in here very knowledgeable when it comes to modes? I asked some questions on my guitar forum but didnt really get helpful responses. Its sort of a TLDR post/question so im not going to post it unless someone thinks they want to answer a few things for me.
5/28/2008 4:04:05 PM
I've got a semi-working knowledge of modes, but it depends on how elaborate your question is.The weird part is that I'm not even used to this Dano yet...it just feels right, even though it's a shitty Strat copy with a fake Mosrite body.
5/28/2008 4:25:48 PM
Someone just put a TV Yellow USA Gibson Melody Maker with one P-90 on craigslist. They're fantastic guitars and I'd buy it if I had the cash just so I'd have a matching pair. It's $300 for an American Gibson with a case, and of course the greatest of all pickups.
5/28/2008 7:57:54 PM
that is extremely tempting for the price but Im not sure if I can afford with with a few trips I am wanting to take this summer and the cab I bought (which arrived in raleigh yesterday...but I cant play it until im back up there in a week )and also, the mode question, I got it answered and I was wrong haha. I can hear the differences in the modes and understand them generally, but I still get mixed up understand when to use specific modes.[Edited on May 29, 2008 at 9:49 AM. Reason : ]

I dont really like the single pickup setup now that I think about it.. I'd probably like it fine but I'd rather spend a little more and get moreSo, it's all yours
5/29/2008 10:26:36 AM
any thoughts on the Gibson P94Ts ("Humbucker Sized" P90)?
6/4/2008 1:08:31 PM
There are a number of humbucker-sized P-90s out there, and the P-94 is one of the two that sounds truest to the original wide-coil P-90. The Gibson P-94 is one of them, and the other is the GFS Mean 90. There are other interesting pickups like the Harmonic Design Z-90, Duncan Phat Cat, and GFS Dream 90 that are a single coil hybrid of the P-90 and PAF sound, but they're not quite as gritty and touch-sensitive as the real thing, so I don't recommend them if you're going for the real P-90 sound. If you wanna try them out, there's an SG sitting on the counter at GC that's fitted with P-94s in both positions. In other news, I snagged a "Mitchell" brand 4x12 cab on craigslist for $150 and I'm anxious to try it out. Apparently, this Mitchell guy built Boogie clones out of his CA shop back in the '70s, so it could be great or it could suck. I couldn't pass up a weird 4x12 for less than $200, though. ]
6/4/2008 1:34:45 PM
yea thats a really good deal. I dont know much about them though.I might have to try that SG out since Ill actually be in raleigh this weekend. The reason I asked was because most SGs ive seen (also looked at ibanez artists and they fall into this category as well) have humbuckers. Its just a lot easier to find the SGs with humbuckers equipped (and i like the way they look too), however I'm interested in the P90s sound out of the next guitar I get.
6/4/2008 1:45:26 PM
The Mean 90s are cheap (~$40)...you could throw one into one of your old beaters and see how it sounds. A P-94 is going to be about double that.
6/4/2008 2:07:36 PM
So I think I hit a minor jackpot with this Mitchell cabinet...opened it up to find two Celestion G12-80s from 1975 and two Celestion G12-30s from 1980.I was lead to believe that most of these were equipped with nice-but-not-ideal-for-guitar EV speakers, so I was very pleasantly surprised to find no shit vintage Celestions. ]
6/5/2008 3:35:59 AM
very nice. I get to use my brand new cabinet for the first time tomorrow when I get back up to raleigh. Very excited.
6/5/2008 7:59:00 AM
I'll stick with my headphones [Edited on June 5, 2008 at 9:26 AM. Reason : spellage]
6/5/2008 9:26:05 AM
So, I was at GC and tried a Crate V32 head for no reason in particular...I've always been wary of Crate, but this one has great jangle and sounds basically as good as the new Chinese AC30 reissues for a quarter of the price.Cool. ]
6/5/2008 8:47:57 PM
I'd sell my Marshall 1959SLP Reissue head and 1960 Slant Cabinet if the price was right. I've been running my Boss GT6 through the PA for the past few gigs and have no need for a 100 Watt head anymore. Its a really nice rig if anyones interested. Its in like new condition. 1600 takes em both! Together, the value is over 2400 for the head and the cab brand new at guitar center or sam ash will be just over 1000.
6/6/2008 7:48:01 AM
So how hard is it to replace a pickup? They're just soldered in, right? Just picked up a cheap guitar off the classifieds to mess around with (Oscar Schmidt OE-30, semi-hollowbody ES-335 clone) and I'm considering putting one of those Mean 90's in it to sample this P-90 sound vinylbandit speaks so highly of.
6/6/2008 9:54:12 AM
Well, a Mean 90 is a straight drop-in replacement for a Gibson-style humbucker (the Fender ones from the '70s are bigger than that), but it's not quite as simple as just soldering it in. If your 335 has humbuckers, it most likely has 500k pots for the tone and volume. As a single coil, a P-90 doesn't have quite the output of a humbucker, even a tame one, and 500k pots will suck out quite a bit of the sparkle that makes the P-90 so wonderful. The solution to that is to switch the pots to 250k...just another six bucks and some more soldering, and not really a big deal at all, but it's not a simple pickup switch.
6/6/2008 2:28:32 PM
Hmm. Sounds doable... Probably won't do it right away because of $$$ concerns (just found out that I need to buy a new suit, ugh) but sounds like a plan for next month. I could see this running away from me rather easily though...replace pickup, okay...have to replace pots to do that...might as well replace other pickup...does the wiring need any help...and before you know it I've spent more on this than I paid for the guitar ($90, I did say "cheap")If nothing else it should give me some experience with working on this stuff.
6/6/2008 4:58:21 PM
It can definitely seem daunting, but then you cobble together some shit on a beater and realize you can do it yourself and everything opens up.As Joe Walsh says, learn to fix your own shit and you'll save yourself a world of headache.
6/6/2008 5:37:22 PM
I can't believe I bought a Crate amp.Luckily, it doesn't say Crate anywhere on it.
6/6/2008 11:41:20 PM
lol.i'm going to get a 5150 combo some time soon.
6/6/2008 11:41:47 PM
^^ Have you ever tried a Gibson P-94?
6/7/2008 12:26:31 AM
how long can I expect it to take to break in new V30s? I've never bought a new speaker cabinet before...Also, breaking them in, is the real method just playing however I normally would and whatever volume I normally play at when we are practicing or should I wait awhile to crank them or what?
6/7/2008 2:07:04 AM
^^
6/7/2008 11:21:06 AM
I practiced with our drummer today at a decent volume for about 2 hours...not full out as loud as I would normally practice but loud enough. Before that I just played for an hour or two at a very low volume..the volume at the exact point where you can hear all the speakers kick in and it has a little tone(maybe 2ish?).I left them upstairs with a stereo running into the back of my speaker cabinet playing some CDs and ive just left it up there. Ill probably turn it off before bed. Its not that loud (you can hear it outside of the garage/bonus room building we practice in but not that much, so its not pushing the speakers too hard)

interesting but ive always been skeptical of those package type setups.anyone have any advice on recording to my laptop? I am not looking for anything great at all. Right now I just record straight through a crappy 2x12 combo into a built in laptop mic..and of course that is terrible wishy washy quality. It sort of works but it gets annoying and its hard to practice to/write harmonizing riffs because of the wishywashyness losing some of the tonality. What are some relatively cheap options for getting a halfway decent sound (and by halfway decent i am very flexible. even distortion pedalesque distortion would be acceptable for this setup..im only looking for it to help me write 2 parts when im by myself) onto my laptop. There are a lot of cheap multitrack audio programs I could record into so im mainly just looking for something to interface my guitar to my laptop. Thanks!
6/11/2008 12:57:45 PM
http://www.johnson-amp.com/jstation.htmi'm getting one today or tomorrow so that i can record on the go without worrying about amps and micing and shit anymore.alot of people use Audacity or some other program that i forgot the name of. I use cubase because i got it for free from a family member and its superior.]

thanks, that looks pretty nifty. Ive never used a MIDI output...can that be sent through USB or is that a separate slot needed on a sound card (which i dont have since I have a simple motherboard laptop sound card).so with just a little research it looks like there are MIDI to USB converter cables that you could use. let me know how you have yours set up when you get it.[Edited on June 11, 2008 at 2:54 PM. How do I go about setting a fair value for a 2000-2001 Mexican Stratocaster MZ01999 Artic (I think) finish rosewood fretboard with a maple neck (also, pretty sure here not positive). The only bad thing is a hairline (literal) crack in the body that doesn't affect playability.[Edited on June 12, 2008 at 12:03 AM. Reason : ,]
