Act != substancePot = illegalmeth = illegalcoke = illegalalcohol != illegalThat's like saying that cars are an illegal item, since you're not allowed to drive them without a license.

As we count down the days until the opening of training camps, I've decided to play a fun game of "Better or Worse?" In the coming weeks, I'll look at each team (in alphabetical order) and give you my opinion about whether it will be better or worse in the coming season based on what it has done in the offseason. This isn't meant to be a complete preview. I'll leave that for the fall.Carolina Hurricanes (40-34-8): BetterAfter the Stanley Cup win in 2006, the Hurricanes' title defense never picked up much steam. A combination of injuries and individual underachievement left Carolina on the outside of the playoff chase.Longtime GM Jim Rutherford figured his roster didn't need a major face-lift, and I can't really argue with that thinking. The Hurricanes should be (first and foremost) healthy, rested and hungry when they open training camp next month.Rutherford didn't stand totally pat, though. He made an interesting move by reacquiring forward Matt Cullen, whose versatility was an important part of the Hurricanes' championship run in 2005-06. That offseason, Cullen signed a free-agent deal with the Rangers, who didn't really know how to use him.Cullen became expendable in New York after the big-market team signed top free-agent centers Scott Gomez and Chris Drury. Because of the situation, Rutherford didn't have to give up too much (defenseman Andrew Hutchinson, forward Joe Barnes and a third-round pick in 2008) to put Cullen back in a Hurricanes sweater.Carolina also signed free-agent center Jeff Hamilton, who put up 18 goals and 21 assists in his first full NHL season with Chicago. Coach Peter Laviolette probably has a little knowledge of Hamilton thanks to their time spent together in the Islanders organization earlier in the decade.Rutherford also added goalie Michael Leighton to challenge John Grahame for the No. 2 job behind starter Cam Ward, who signed a new three-year contract in May. Leighton played just five NHL games last season in Nashville and Philadelphia, but he spent at least a few minutes with the Chicago Blackhawks earlier in his career (2002-04).I believe the Hurricanes were victims of a lot of bad circumstances last season. I expect they'll be better and more consistent in 2007-08 and should find their way back to the playoffs. But I don't see another Cup in their immediate future.
8/27/2007 9:14:20 PM
I'm not so sure about Leighton challenging John Grahame. He could hardly challenge Robert Esche.Granted, he's still young, and Justin Peters went on a huge skid late last season that will put Leighton in at a solid #3, but I really don't think Grahame is going to have to worry about giving up more than a couple of his 18-20 starts.
