toemoss can you give me some good places to start on learning about homebrew and the likes? there's a ton of them and i would like to cut through the weeds a little as I get started

HO-LY SHITNo offense to PSP fans and I don't want to start an argument or anything but I just got Mario Kart DS. I went straight to the WIFI multiplayer. I have been playing just the online multiplayer for the last 30 mins and I am already convinced that this game is THE BEST GAME THE DS HAS. I haven't even played any of the single player grand prix/mission races. To anyone who has a DS -- GET THIS GAME RIGHT NOW.[Edited on November 15, 2005 at 5:06 PM. Reason : best mario kart game ever made]
11/15/2005 5:02:52 PM
no offense taken from me. if i had the money, i'd be tempted to get the DS just for mario kart.
11/15/2005 5:44:40 PM
no offense taken by me either, I have psp + burnout.
11/15/2005 9:33:11 PM
Well you never know with some of the people on this board.
11/15/2005 10:15:21 PM
mario kart, castlevania, mario 64, and kirby are the only games that look remotely interesting to me...the rest of them just seem like gba games with a second screen (or graphics so bad they're not even worth considering)
11/15/2005 10:26:22 PM
i once dated a girl named kirby
11/15/2005 10:30:17 PM
she sung bass right?
11/16/2005 12:38:26 AM
not utilizing both screens isnt necessarily bad. i mean if they are using the touchscreen, it'll still be effective use of the technology and different.
11/17/2005 12:00:12 AM
wow you arent kidding. Mario Kart DS pwns me all across the room. The WiFi global multiplayer is cut-throat, some seriously talented karters out there.
11/17/2005 1:35:11 PM
Just got my PSP. Turns out, they've just launched a GIGA Pack version w/ a Sony 1GB stick for just $300. What a great deal...I got the first one at the best buy here.
11/17/2005 3:49:12 PM
You can use the psp as an extra controler for the ps3 from what I've read. Can you do that with the ds?
11/17/2005 11:20:11 PM
^we wont know till (if) the Revolution is releasedcould be a bit, though it is possibleand it would be a good option for thoes who dont like the current controler, should they decide to
11/17/2005 11:45:03 PM
i heard the ps3 is also going to act as a location free tv hub...so you can watch tv on your psp via the internets
11/18/2005 12:12:20 AM
I'm very surprised right now that there haven't been any reports of PSPs breaking down on people. I'm being completely serious too. Anyone who's familiar with Sony's history with consoles can relate.
11/18/2005 10:48:00 AM
I'm actually kinda considering one of these for christmas. PSPPros: Roms, Socom, GTA, SSX, Madden, oh god Battlefront, just looks coolerCons: Too damn expensiveDSPros: Mario Kart, Mario 64, GBA games I didn't get to play, not too expensive, its NintendoCons: Not as much cool crap you can do with it, its NintendoGranted I've never had a PS2 so I didn't get to play many of the PS2 games that they are remaking. I don't see quite as many good games for the DS as I do for the PSP, am I missing some?Any advice?[Edited on November 18, 2005 at 1:18 PM. Reason : battlefront]
11/18/2005 1:17:54 PM
Castlevania is awesome and Goldeneye is pretty good.I'm really looking forward to Metroid Prime Hunters and FF3. There is also a new Zelda and Smash Brothers game rumored to be in the early stages of production.
11/18/2005 4:57:13 PM
After going and looking at some screenshots, accept for the Mario games, the graphics on the DS look kinda crappy, are they really that bad? I haven't been able to play one yet.
11/18/2005 9:22:22 PM
I am amazed by the PSP...the cl;arity and graphics are amazing. I just wish the support in the manual was a little better, but it seems to be geared more towards total morons instead of getting soem more in-depth support....oh well
11/18/2005 10:32:07 PM
^^It depends on the game. Some games look good and some look bad.
11/18/2005 11:41:23 PM
^^ yeah I definately think the PSP hardware is better but I just can't drop $250 on that plus $50 games
11/19/2005 12:06:53 AM
socom on the psp is sweet...its online is like what i've heard about mario kart ds...that it shows what the online is truly capable of
11/19/2005 1:58:51 AM
11/19/2005 10:40:24 AM
Yeah, I couldn't find a very good list of upcoming games thanks. After lookin at it some more last night I definately think I'm leaning toward the DS.
11/19/2005 2:28:33 PM
I guess if you own more than 3 games at a time, then ds is the way to go.If you only want to have one or two at a time, then psp, imo.
11/19/2005 5:07:48 PM
PSP R0xors my SoX0rs!!!1
11/20/2005 7:23:57 PM
socom really is enough to buy the psp for if you like socom for the ps2. theres thousands of people online at any given time and you can always find a full game of 16 people to hop in with. there's virtually no lag, and you can even get a headset if you want to have some more strategy and communication. i'm havin a ton of fun with it.
11/20/2005 8:22:20 PM
^^^ why
11/20/2005 9:35:15 PM
althought he psp games are of better quality imo, if I were to want more than say 3 games at any time, I'd go with the DS because they seem to have a lot more variety. I'm of the type though that would rather have a good one or two games, so I got the psp.
11/20/2005 11:14:12 PM
11/21/2005 5:40:04 AM
teehee
11/21/2005 11:26:30 AM
I kinda have a hard time seeing the point of buying a $250 "gaming" system (more multipurpose than gaming...) and only buy 2-3 games for said system.
11/21/2005 12:05:38 PM
^^^only 4 out of the 14 games he listed are 'nintendo' games[Edited on November 21, 2005 at 12:18 PM. Reason : unless trauma center was in-house, then 5/14]
11/21/2005 12:17:32 PM
^^ Did I not say 2-3 at a time? I meant to say 2-3 at a time.
11/21/2005 6:08:04 PM
thats funny Nacho. The real truth is that when presented with the choice of better games, the DS owns the psp. When the PSP comes out with decent games that arent ps2 mainstream titles with shittier framerates, consider me signed up and I'll have me one. Until then...i just dont see the contest. For the record, my favorite consoles of all time are the ps2 and snes. I have more ps2 games than any other system. I love nintendo and sony but i just dont think they are pushing the envelope any more (sony)
11/21/2005 9:34:28 PM
*slurp slurp slurp*
11/21/2005 9:52:34 PM
^^some people dont go for nintendo games. in that case, a proven game might be more appealing. your opinion doesnt dictate fact
11/21/2005 10:34:54 PM
it's hard to play my ps2 when I'm waiting for my wife to try on every shoe in the store.
11/21/2005 10:49:00 PM
I've put about 8 hours into GTA for the PSP and haven't really noticed bad drops in framerate, but it's far from "shitty"and frankly, i would rather have the PS2 title ports (rather, semi-ports) than some craptastic shit that people make to fit the capabilities of the system. admit it, if you could get zelda from the GC onto a DS with just a little less quality and a few slow spots, you'd probably nut for it
11/21/2005 11:00:03 PM
he probably needs to change his link jammies after reading that.
11/21/2005 11:04:51 PM
PSP all the way. That's all I have to say.
11/22/2005 12:15:32 AM
You guys are like a bunch of brutes, lol.About the zelda thing, fyi, I hated wind waker. I sold my copy. It looked and played stupid. So to answer your statement, a handheld version of any gamecube or n64 game for that matter wouldnt interest me sans Resident Evil IV. I'm also not really a big zelda fan. I've only beat one zelda game, and that was the original. I just like new games with replay factor whose control scheme isnt sluggish. [Edited on November 22, 2005 at 12:53 AM. Reason : ]
11/22/2005 12:49:02 AM
explain again why you think the psp is sluggish??

well, a lot of the homebrew won't work with 2.00, which is required to run GTA and SOCOM. I did however find EBOOT loader that will use a pixel exploit to be able to boot up applications. Right now all I've tested in NesterJ and SNES9x, and both work well (thou the SNES requires overclocking the processor and cutting sound quality a bit). I'm pretty stoked that I can get ROMs working...tomorrow I'll be seeing what else I can figure out.got the software from http://www.psp-hacks.com
11/24/2005 4:44:33 AM
well you can always just downgrade from 2.0 to 1.5....its kind of a hassle, but if you dont make it like a back and forth sorta thing, its not so bad. just do it every once in a while.
11/24/2005 12:58:13 PM
really the only hacks I cared about were getting emulators for roms on there....you can't do any root loading (like some of the movie viewers, ISO loaders, etc), but as long as I've got Kid Icarus AND can still play GTA, I'm happy.
11/24/2005 3:22:01 PM
yeah.. the only thing that annoys me about the eboot loaders is having to hold the power switch up for 5 minutes
12/1/2005 1:21:02 PM
I'm completely addicted to Mario Kart online play, but I've gotta say it's still disappointing.
