With companies now seeing just how much the use of AI for their dev teams is costing them, I’m really hoping for a sharp and severe drawback of AI use.

Surely Georgia isn’t using imminent domain for high-power transmission lines to power datacenters just so we can see pictures of George Washington riding bears waving AK-47’s and shouting freedom.

i can assure you with near certainty it will not happen. the goal now is to hill climb toward the most productive uses of AI. that's why openai shut down sora. AI video is expensive to create and has little productive economic value. they'd rather focus on AI for software development tools because that's an actually productive use of the technology and therefore people will pay for it. will take some time for the industry to find an equilibrium on how much they're willing to pay, and it's a good thing imo that the industry quickly got over their tokenmaxxing instincts are now trying to be responsible with their budgets. the value is still clearly there, there's just no reason to overspend on creating the value.

i mean it's not like every other technology before AI wasn't also used to create lifetimes worth of frivolous nonsense. you can walk into a bookstore and see a thousand trashy romance novels or celebrity gossip magazines, nobody's complaining about it. you can turn on the tv and see 100s of channels of useless reality tv and cable news, nobody complains about wanting to shut down the cable industry. you can spend hours a day on your phone before AI watching stupid useless entertainment on youtube, instagram, tiktok, and THE WOLF WEB, but nobody complains about shutting down the internet. let people read their gossip magazines and laugh at AI memes if they want. it's not that serious.

Yeah totally agree. You can imagine something that worked with no friction (not fake and gay like amazon go). As implemented it does not spark joy. With accelerating progress you'd think someone will make it not suck soon.


I had a friend that would refuse to use the self checkouts. He'd stand in a line 100 deep before going to an empty self checkout, even with one item in his cart. I don't work here, pay me if you want me to scan it myself!

A charitable view of your point is that having enhanced capabilities of shipping software does not necessarily improve life. In many cases we have evidence of the opposite. From buy no pay later, crypto gambling, and ML models monitoring the poors it does the opposite. More of that probably could be bad.

Toilets still need plumbed and roads repaired. There are promises but no empirical evidence of new physical ai (humanoids or other robots) being able to do our laundry for real outside of demos.

Ai is more a force of nature than a technology

What does it mean when a bunch of silicon and electricity can scan the universe and answer any question?

Lots of good and bad things will happen in the meanwhile though, we should try to avoid the bad things, which so far we seem to be failing in
