My thoughts on AI are that I am a Science Manager at Amazon Alexa. Here and elsewhere nobody writes code by hand anymore, and all documents are also written by AI (closely supervised and through multiple iterations). I shudder to think I may have to go to some other company that doesn't have unlimited tokens.

^I mostly agree, but it is pretty good at giving concise information about certain niche/specific topics, and citing sources (though a lot of the sources aren't reputable, of course, so use at your own caution and make your own judgments there)

obviously a majority of it is crap, but e.g. asking it to summarize a long youtube video that you don't want to watch could be helpful.. like for home repair or something along that line. I haven't really needed to rely on it for anything like that, though, but it streamlines a lot of stuff that's relatively easily verifiable (like I had a mod I wanted to do on the Wii U, and it put it in order for me. Which, yeah, to your point, it does make me stupider that I couldn't do it myself, but whatever - that's what the tech is for, I guess)

yeah, it does kind of make you stupid, but I think social media at large is kind of making us dumber in other ways than that, and that ball already started rolling years ago. I would also argue - even though it's not something that applies to me - that it helps a lot of us who are too lazy to go about learning stuff by other means. Simply typing it in and getting any kind of answer is pretty helpful to slower learners, since you receive it pretty much instantaneously

I know the attention span of the general populace has declined, but by the same token, I think it was never really all that good; it just wasn't heavily studied a long time ago, because the cultural shifts which caused the shortened attention spans to come about are relatively new. When TV came into existence and became more prominent (along with video games, and arguably other diversions/modern habits), our attn span fragmented, so we've already been going down that path, I suppose

but really, what is it to need intellectual critical thinking skills? most humans are just simply trying to survive. matters of the mind don't mean much when you can't even afford to put food on your table, or are homeless. a lot of people be just tryin' to get by a lot of people simply aren't as smart as someone like you or qfred and all you nerds on here. some of us are dumb

critical thinking is good in the workplace, and when it keeps you from negatively affecting others, but by and large people are just stupid and are stupid amongst themselves. obviously you can ignore any social media outlet you want (and AI), so you can at least control what information flows your way. But I would (relatively weakly) argue that it's not necessarily that everyone's gotten dumber; it's just that now almost literally everything is publicized/recorded/scrutinized, where it didn't use to be - and there are way more people than there used to be, meaning there are more people literally just tryin' to make it and not necessarily need to possess the skills to think for themselves in most situations.

which, of course is a double-edged sword, since not possessing those skills can frequently end up bad, but some people like to be sheep, and safely (or unsafely) graze together, for better or for worse ¯\_(?)_/¯

I do find it sad to see a decline in intellectualism, but it still exists in universities and other places of academia. It's just buried underneath a bunch of crap, unfortunately, since most people misuse the internet (it's for pr0n btw, that is the main advantage of the interwebs)



tl;dr - I would agree that we are slightly dumber overall because of it, but also LLMs can be helpful. I think we'd be better off without it though, personally. AI should be used more for humanitarian needs like distribution of resources, ability to have robots do work where humans used to, and to ultimately make life easier for everyone in the world - as we can see, however, that's not the way it's going

yeah it wasn't necessary to type all of this. I just don't think it's inherently all stupid, I suppose. plus, AI has been in existence long before this big LLM push. it can still be used correctly, we just need to better control the kinds of people who are in charge of it, to make sure they're ethically justified in their decisions
