I wouldn't mind that at all, but my job takes me out of the cave in the mornings, so

is there a better way for me to make money from said cave? :3

Do you plan to do this indefinitely? Or would something have to happen for you to stop?

We have an extremely small bubble. Right now, it's one friend who lives alone, no children. We have dinner twice a week, once in each home. If we have to go somewhere or have someone in our homes, we cancel dinners for three days (I think that's the most common incubation period). He recently had a stove delivered, which meant delivery guys in the house, which meant no dinner.

We don't go out to restaurants or bars or anything like that. I pick up groceries curbside once a week. I only use the ATM or drive-thru lane at the credit union. For things requiring one of us to physically go inside somewhere, like signing a contract or getting a shot, we wear masks with replaceable filters and try to minimize the time indoors.

Even when I pick up groceries, if I have to roll down the window to answer a question or present my ID, I put on a KN95. The last time we socialized with Sonia's brother's family (with school-age nieces) before tightening the bubble to its current state, it was all outdoors for about an hour masked, and it was just she who went. I sometimes go to Char-Grill, where you order outside, and still mask up.

We don't even take walks anymore. I mean we get outdoors, check the mail, whatever, but we wound up buying a treadmill just for exercise. Nothing really seems worth the risk. But I cope, because transmitting the disease seems much worse than anything I've given up.

Never been infected, never transmitted as far as we know.

Well, we kinda have to plan to do it indefinitely, don't we? The local, state, and national responses to the pandemic have all been fucking awful. We've taken the strictest precautions we could with the expectation that everyone who could live like this would do it for three to six weeks to reduce outbreaks. That never happened, because our governments had no will to pay the costs to make it possible. So we are stuck in our third year now of living what should have been a much shorter lockdown.

It's so much worse because there are vaccines, and we have somehow permitted the stupidest fucking people on Earth and the grifters who depend on their money to dictate what is permissible in terms of public health responses and what is obligatory for individuals.

It isn't fun for me. I don't like being the guy who won't go out to the pizzeria for a slice on the patio on a nice day. I don't like not going to the movie theater walking distance from the house. I sure as shit didn't like telling my mama I wouldn't be seeing her at Christmas for the third year in a row.

But that doesn't matter, because I am capable of isolating. I can afford it, I can tolerate the mental strain, it's fine. I am not going to be the asshole who gets someone killed because he really missed going to the movies. I sure as shit am not gonna put myself at risk of contracting COVID when one in ten people develops what seem to be permanent disabilities. Nothing I'm missing is worth either of those prices.

Frankly, I don't know what changes that. A huge shift in public policy and cultural mores, I fear. Let the federal government pay to keep us all home for a few weeks without worrying about losing our jobs or going out of business. Let everyone who can get vaccinated get vaccinated instead of being a fucking moron about it. Let every fucking grifter crowing about the "vaccine injured" and faking the shakes on TikTok die in a burning ditch. Maybe I'd go out for a drink then.

Don’t worry Froshkiller, for every activity that you sit out on I’ll do three to make up for it. We’ve got to get back to normalcy and if that means making three separate trips to Walmart to get my bread, booze, and birth control, then so be it!

^^^ do you and/or your family have health conditions that would make contracting Covid especially dangerous for y’all?

I’m not judging, do whatever you gotta do. I’m just curious.

I’ll be that guy and judge:

I think froshkiller is insane, there’s no way I would isolate three days between buddy dinners if one of us goes to the park for some fresh freedom air…I personally don’t associate with anyone who isolates less than five days between buddy dinners.

If we do or if we don't, either way, plenty of otherwise healthy people come out the other side with permanent complications. I don't want no brain fog.

Fair enough. If that’s what you’re able and willing to do, I get it. My wife and I can’t work from home. That alone makes it basically impossible to truly quarantine. But we locked it down as much as we reasonably could while she was pregnant. And having a baby makes social outings less frequent anyways. Our circle is smaller than it used to be. But at this point, vaccinated and boosted, we are mostly back to normal. We’re still careful. We quarantined during Christmas after an exposure. But nothing to the extent that you’ve described. That level of quarantine isn’t even possible for the vast majority of people.

For someone so outwardly misanthrophic, FroshKiller sure does care a lot about the health and wellness of his fellow man. But I also don't want to accidentally kill people out of selfishness, so I kind of understand.

I know. That's why I resent our governments' many failures to provide for their people's health. I'm fortunate to be able to do this, but everyone deserves the opportunity to be so careful to curb the spread of coronavirus. I'm not judging anyone else for going to work or doing whatever they need to do, shit they don't have a livable choice about.

Hell, I know it's extreme. I see plenty of mouthbreathers walking in and out of the grocery store unmasked every time I pick up an order. Any precaution at all seems extreme relative to that.

But I think I'm rational. I've never been a germophobe. I don't compulsively wash my hands or anything like that. I have my understanding of the disease and its effects, and it's a pretty straight line from there to "don't fucking breathe around anyone."

What's crazy is, like, kids are in fuckin' school. Crazy is my co-workers traveling by plane next month for an absolutely unnecessary conference.

Do you, man. But are you willing to miss like 20 Christmases with your mom? I have been lucky enough to not get covid either, but eventually you have to get to a point where it isn't the main guiding light of your life. The timetable is different for everyone and that is fine, but there will always be people who won't get vaccinated, and inefficient govt measures, so if that's your requirement for resuming semi-normal activities, you know you'll never reach it.

We've been cautious but I still go out a lot and so far my whole immediate family (wife and two teenage sons) have avoided Covid. I have a couple of reasons why I think we have missed it:

1) We all went fully remote for a bit. Wife had to go back first after only a couple of months, but both our works were pretty cautious. When we went back we masked for a while and even now at my job at least we don't congregate in huge groups (group meetings have a hybrid component now). My team of four that I manage locally spreads out and we still do one rotating WFH day, further limiting our contact.
3) We have not flown since the pandemic. Several of my coworkers got it when they or somebody in the house took a flight.
4) My kids are older and mostly hang virtually with their friends. They were heavy Discord users even before the pandemic. They are totally happy like that but do hang with their friends in person on occasion. Their school (CHCCS) was on it about masks and testing so I think that helped. Wasn't as crazy for HS kids as for lower grades.
5) We rarely eat out as a family; even before the pandemic we mostly did takeout as it was cheaper. I go out for lunch a couple times a week but my work schedule has lunch at 11, so I'm usually in places before it gets busy. I eat with 1-3 coworkers in my team and we usually space out from others, mainly so things are quieter and we don't bother others while we talk.
6)I rarely go in the grocery store anymore. We do Whole Foods car side pickup and have Food Lion delivered. Mostly the convenience factor but we didn't start doing that until the pandemic. I will go in if I only need a couple of things and don't mask up, but I'm usually pretty quickly in and out.
7) I have a favorite bar I hang out at 2-3x a week. It is mostly outdoors with a small indoor section, where I usually sit to hang out with the bartenders. This arrangement probably has helped limit my exposure.

We have done a few riskier things, but also try to minimize exposures. Summer 2021 we did a two week trip to the northeast, but we drove up there rather than flying and we stayed more at AirBNBs rather than hotels. We like to do more outdoor things like going to Niagara Falls, Gettysburg Battleground, USS Intrepid, but we did ride the crowded elevator for the Maid of the Mist. We have also been to several indoor concerts like TSO Christmas 2021. We did an NCSU football and basketball game this season, and the boys and I have volunteered in concessions for three UNC basketball games. We are vaccinated, boosted, tested when we were sick/symptomatic (we have had other illnesses) and assume we will eventually get it, but so far we have either dodged it or or were asymptomatic.

Will All Your Base Are Belong To Us / Zero Wing still be a meme in the year 2101? What will the future denizens of The Wolf Web do to commemorate it?

If someone here lives to a near-record human age, they could hope to witness it.

I would be 117-118. Chances are not good.

Yeah but googling takes the fun out of everything. Plus, you might have specific context to this forum that isn't reflected in the web at large.

You'll be pleased to know I didn't use Google. I used Wikipanion to go straight to the relevant Wikipedia articles and then the well-known Know Your Meme.
