The student directory on NC State's site prior to Facebook was called the stalker directory back in the day. It was exactly the sort of data source Zuckerberg used to create FaceMash. That fuckin' thing showed people's email addresses, phone numbers, dorms, even photos. Several Wolf Web trolls got doxxed thanks to that thing.
1/27/2023 2:51:38 PM
The student directory did not show photos when i was at state. Also you could pretty easily remove your information if you wished. Also it only showed a phone number if you lived on campus.
1/27/2023 3:23:44 PM
Yeah, I don't remember it ever showing photos.
1/27/2023 7:07:58 PM
^^^yep minus photos aspect
1/27/2023 7:59:12 PM
Weird…when I was in school they had nude photos on there too. You could type in a student/professor name (e.g. “Anita Flick”) and bam - noods.
1/28/2023 11:41:50 AM
I think Paul Cousins saved all the photos to his private hard drive and then made the university take them down off the interwebs.

Paul Cousins read the thread, and he has spoken!

I can promise you that if Mark Zuckerberg had been on T-Dub, we'd have been calling him Mark Suckadick.

^ FroshKiller, what's the West Raleigh 3 (4)?
3/3/2023 4:39:53 PM
LONG story, but basically:For years and years, the NCSU Police Department has maintained an online blotter where they summarize incident reports. Like when some dude is masturbating in the library and the library staff call the cops, the cops would post something about it.In 2004, a link to the blotter's admin page and its credentials got posted here. A bunch of people posted fake reports about how there weren't any doughnuts, the Dell dude burned down the Atrium, a pictures of pigs, a bunch of silly shit. The cops got super ass-blasted about it and started a criminal investigation. I don't want to get into all the whys and wherefores, but they questioned a few users and got statements.A detective (fuck you, krosser) wound up questioning me and tried to get me to say jackleg did it. I refused. They wound up searching my apartment and shit while I was at work.Come to find out eventually they had four felony arrest warrants. I heard they scooped jackleg, so I mobilized. Sonia raised some funds for his legal defense on the Brickyard while I retained counsel. The West Raleigh Three were me, jackleg, and Snewf. I turned myself in, and the three of us got our goddamn mugshots on WRAL. The fourth warrant was for UJustWait84.They never had any kind of fucking case and it was all fucking bullshit regardless, but jackleg and I wound up getting indicted by a grand jury. It was pretty scary for a while there, but the state eventually just dropped it.There's a bunch of details and shit, some of it's funny, but I only really like to get into that period when I'm drunk as hell. Here are the mugshots since the pic gets posted a few times a year anyway:[Edited on March 3, 2023 at 5:26 PM. Reason : mugshots]

^^ Did you ever get to know who the original poster was or how they got that information in the first place? And damn. I'd have guessed that in that situation they would just make you meet student conduct and apologize or whatever and call it a day. You weren't the actual "hackers" either, right?A felony on your record over something like this would be so stupid[Edited on March 3, 2023 at 8:06 PM. Reason : r]
3/3/2023 8:06:31 PM
There wasn't any hacking to be done. The credentials were left exposed. Sloppy police work!
3/3/2023 8:14:08 PM
I don't remember the username of the account the link and credentials were posted under, but it was certainly an alias. I have no idea who actually posted. There were tons of people who used the info to post to the blotter and show off, but I wasn't one of them. I was actually busy getting ready for my commencement that morning. The particular charge was unauthorized access of government computers in violation of NC statute 14-454.1, a class H felony. You're right, it was stupid, and I've always been sure it was vindictive because I didn't say what that pig son of a bitch wanted me to say.

I think they arraigned him. Put him in a cell for a few hours. He was bailed out.RPD investigated for a few months. Put a cloud over his head for a few months. Brought him and the other two before a grand jury to see if they had enough evidence to take the case to trial. Ultimately they didn't have enough evidence to bring it to trial so they let them go. Twiddled their thumbs for a little bit to make them sweat and ultimately dropped all charges. Law enforcement was just pissed at themselves for getting caught with shitty cyber security, and the Wolf Web would make fun of them on occasion in threads.

That sucks. Has it now been expunged? I don't really know anything about the rules or processes for that sort of thing.Would it still show up on a background check?]
3/5/2023 8:13:00 PM
I had the option to get it expunged, but I decided not to bother. My employer at the time was fine with my explanation, and I've been there ever since. I assume it would still show up, but if I decide to get another job, I figure I can deal with it. It was damn near 20 years ago at this point.
3/5/2023 8:27:37 PM
If you are applying for any type of IT job, I could see how it could almost be a positive. Like yeah, we found the weaknesses and vulnerabilities in this website, because of my smarts.
3/5/2023 9:40:16 PM
^^^^Is there a reason they concentrated on you and not the many other users who posted stuff that you mentioned? Or I guess they weren't able to find out who those people were for some reason like them using a public computer or something
3/6/2023 10:04:26 AM
The sense I got was this: They figured from the evidence they had that I knew something was up before the thread was posted, so it's reasonable to assume that if anyone knew who was responsible or was directly involved, it'd be me.Rosser definitely wanted me to say jackleg did it. I refused to put anything like that in a statement.I don't think now that I was ever seriously a suspect. I think they just wanted me to say it was him and were trying to pressure me, and they didn't realize it wouldn't work until after they took it to superior court. As far as other folks, I don't want to tell tales out of school, but I know they interviewed more than the four of us, and I know at least one person copped to posting on the blotter (but not the "hacking") and did a few hours of community service. What really chaps me is that our cases were dismissed in late 2004, but we didn't find that out until September 2009. I went five fucking years thinking this bullshit fucking felony case was developing.
3/6/2023 10:58:20 AM
Thanks for not tearing apart my recollection. It's hard to believe it's been almost 20 years.
