Watched this Sylvan Esso thing on their influences: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kHFcqiI5sUs

And they claimed Daft Punk ripped off Herbie Hancock...which got me to check this track because of its reported similarity to Daft Punk's album Random Access Memories, and specifically the track Game of Love: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uU7ZCUGnROk&ab_channel=SavinoCarbone ...seems more like "influenced by to me"

Then I found this dumb article which claims Dank Punk ripped off artists they sampled from, ignoring the fact that Daft Punk properly attributed said sampled artists in their writing credits.
https://www.cracked.com/article_29677_daft-punk-how-much-did-they-rip-off.html

So where is the line? Look at Led Zeppelin. They/Jimmy Page clearly ripped off tons of songwriters, *because he used their shit and didn't give them writing credits: https://www.rollingstone.com/feature/led-zeppelins-10-boldest-rip-offs-223419/

And for a more recent example: https://variety.com/2021/music/news/olivia-rodrigo-paramore-good-4-u-misery-business-1235048791/ - But at least Paramore didn't have to take Rodrigo to court.

There are just a few examples, but lettuce discuss more.

Jessica Simpson ripped off the beat to Jack and Diane with I Think I'm in Love with You.

I recently saw a CBS Sunday Morning segment on this a couple months ago.

And this was on NPR this morning: https://www.npr.org/2022/07/25/1111730560/for-swedish-musician-jens-lekman-recrafting-old-albums-was-a-lesson-in-self-love

Led Zeppelin was the worst. Completely unoriginal hacks.

Daft Punk and Herbie Hancock is definitely influence and not ripping off. The songs sound nothing alike, other than the vocoder, and even the vocoder melody is different.

I've heard hip hop songs that I thought lazily sampled earlier songs and just feature the same sample throughout the entire track, but I wouldn't necessarily call that ripping off either.

I always thought these songs had the same riff at the beginning.

Remember when Vanilla Ice sampled from Queen and David Bowie, but it was totally different because he changed one beat? Good times!
