Chris Rock is a professional comedian who has years of standup comedy experience. He is used to improvising and roasting hecklers, including ones that have threatened physical violence. He prob could have absolutely destroyed Will Smith and had the whole country laughing at him even more than they already are, but he kept it classy and held his tongue. I imagine the next standup comedy special he has is gonna be FULL of jokes about this.

^^I think you're imagining a thought process that didn't exist. Smith is not a small man and appeared to put quote a bit of force behind that slap. Rock deserves a ton of credit for mostly retaining his composure and pressing on, but I doubt he was making complex choices. He was trying to cope through presumably immense shock.
